Got there to pick up and it was ready timely, just as promised and well-packaged in a big paper bag. Total price was 20 and some change. I got home and the food looked good, although what was noted as Napa cabbage on the menu appeared to be some sort of greens. I also didn't see any carrots or bell peppers. The broth was packaged separately, so I nuked it quickly before pouring it on my noodle dish. I then proceed to slurp it down (I was glad to be at home eating it, I was kinda sloppy)! My gyoza were pretty flavorful, but overall I was sort of underwhelmed by the ramen. Nothing was overtly bad, I just felt like I was expecting more. Everything seemed salty, which I expected but the noodles, veggies and broth really lacked any other distinct flavor than that. For $20+, the portion size seemed a little small as well. I was hoping to get two meals from this order (as I usually do at most Asian restaurants), but all that was left were a couple gyozas when I was finished. So we went back a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday. it was between 1-2pm or so so still pretty thick with the lunch crowd and more folks coming in constantly. There seemed to be a full crew working as I counted no less than 5 employees. We placed our order, which came out to be a bit more than $45 for just the two of us, 2 bowls of ramen and 3 drinks. That is REALLY freaking expensive. But we remembered the food was very good so we paid and a couple of folks got up and left and we snagged their table. Their dirty dishes were still on the table, but its ok. Eventually someone would come and clean it up, right? So we sat and the family of 5 that came in right in front of us took seats at a section of table that too had just been vacated and they too were sitting with others dirty dishes on the tables in front of them. So we sat and talked for a while and waited, at least for someone to come get the frikken drity dishes away and maybe wipe down the table. We ended up sitting there for over an hour... waiting for soup and noodles..... does it take that long to put together a bowl of ramen? We dont know. What we do know is that the dirty dishes remained on the table. The family of 5 received their food and I heard the woman ask the waitress if she could please clear off the table.. and maybe wipe it down for them as she had dropped off the food and left the quite obviously old dishes there, serving food around them. What? Why?? Our table was still full of dirty dishes and needed to be wiped down as well.. But for the hour and 15 minutes we sat there before we got our food apparently that was not anyones job. See the way you can tell if people are sitting at a table that needed the dishes cleared is you can see the plastic NUMBER that is on the table meaning people are waiting for food. Eventually we did get our food and it was just sub par. The flavors were rather blandish and not as bold and delicious as it was the first time we had been there. Quality and flavor obviously slipped sine our last visit. Summary: Sat for over an hour surrounded by other peoples dirty dishes and sticky table for subpar food which cost $45 for 2 bowls of ramen and 3 drinks. Will not be returning. Do not recommend. Very good ramen, delicious potstickers and a great lunch special. Based on yelp reviews we tried Ramen Ray for lunch. We were all very happy that we ate here. Hubby and I both had the lunch special, three gyoza (potstickers), rice and a half order of ramen. The gyoza tasted just like my mom's friend made them in our kitchen when I was a child. So fresh, and the sauce on the side was a great balance of soy and vinegar. Hubby had the spicy shoyu, I had the Miso and our son had the Shoyu ramen. We each loved our dish and felt that the flavors were very good. The broths were balanced, not overwhelming in any one flavor. The pork we perfectly cooked and we all wished to have more. I don't eat eggs but both of my guys liked the egg. The building looks like an old Mexican restaurant and doesn't have the fancy vibe of some of the other ramen places but the food was outstanding. They have ample parking in a private lot attached to the restaurant. The inside is not huge and I imagine on a weekend it might get crowded. I had heard ramen rays is the best ramen shop in Indianapolis from many sources. Walking in, you are instantly greeted by a friendly staff and a classic laid back small restaurant feel. The menu is limited, which for me is normally a good sign of strong quality. We ordered the shoyu ramen, miso ramen, and as suggested by the staff, an order of gyoza. The gyoza was a great appetizer. Light, yet flavorful, this was a good start to the meal. I had the shoyu ramen which broken down, was unfortunately nothing special. The soft boiled egg was overcooked, the Chashu was dry and didn't really add much to the bowl. The broth was above average as it was not over powering for a shoyu and the flavor profile was decent. The noodles tasted like normal sun noodles and probably weren't made in house. Overall the bowl was okay and would be a good start for someone just getting into ramen, but for the "best ramen spot in Indy," I was upset they missed some of the basics. We got to try a good amount of food with their Devour Indy menu for 2 people. The pork gyozas were a phenomenal side/appetizer, they came out at the same time as the ramen. We tried the classic Miso and Shoyu ramen, both of which were very good! The Miso had some corn in it which gave it a creamy corn flavor whereas the Shoyu was more of a broth. The Mochi is a great after-dinner dessert! Overall I thought it was a bit pricey, but it does leave you very full. The staff was VERY friendly and helpful. I ordered their full sized Miso Ramen dish and had them add the spice on the side because I didn't know what their level of spice was. Ramen Ray's is a pretty small place. A few small tables surround the outside walls and a few communal tables with room for 6 sit in the middle of the place. Canned and bottled drinks are available by the cash register, and free barley tea and water sit on a "self service" table by the display case of noodles. To say there aren't many frills here would be an understatement, but you come for the food... not the atmosphere. In terms of food, they have three options if you can do fish oil and one if you can't. I went for the miso bowl ($13.50) and a lot of water to flush out the sodium in the broth, but it was delicious. Walk up, place your order (no carryout available... don't even try) and grab a number. I've heard when it's busy, you can wait for a bit before getting your food. Fortunately for us, 5:40 pm on a Wednesday evening didn't qualify as a busy time, so the food came out in about 5 minutes or so. The broth was definitely salty and had a fair amount of fat in it, which just made it taste even better. Thrown in half of an egg, a slice of pork, scallions and corn and you've got yourself a decent dinner, albeit it a tad pricey for no sides. I'm happy with this place. I think over time the kinks will be worked out, and I'd love to see some form of carryout option become available. Wait for the lines to die down. I arrived just a little after noon on a Thursday and didn't have my ramen in front of me until 1:30pm! An hour long line and then a half-hour to wait for your order to be filled. There are also currently NO TO GO boxes. To go is not an option. So you have to find a spot to sit. You do buss your own tray and pick up your own food at the counter, though, so don't think of this as a proper sit-down establishment either. The restaurant itself appears to be one of the many repurposed old Taco Bells. The ones with the sloping roofs. The atmosphere is nice and it's well decorated. The bar table concept's a bit unique in Indy and I think made for some interesting chances to chat and interact with other guests. The ramen is tasty. It was $16 for a bowl of soup with some spice added. The menu's simple. You pick one of three base soups (miso, shoyu, and shio) and then you can add extras like spicy paste or butter. That's really it. The soup bases are all about $13 and then each extra ranges from $1 to $2 apiece. There was complimentary iced barley tea available, which was nice. I really liked having the chance to try some authentic ramen in Indianapolis. And the staff was very friendly. So I'm giving this a middling review. But I would never wait an hour and a half for a single bowl of soup again and I don't feel like the price is quite right. $16 for a bowl of soup really feels like a stretch. If you're curious, go on an off hour. Things were definitely slowing down as I finally got my ramen at 1:30pm. Do NOT show up at noon. Be ready to spend some cash for soup and watch for a seat unless you've brought your own to go container (which some people did!). I'd been eager to try it before the doors opened, and took advantage of the opportunity to feed my other half's cold with some hearty broth and noodles. He ordered the Shoyu (Soy Sauce), while I chose the Shio (Salt), a lighter broth, classified as assari (I've done my Ramen homework). Assari broths are clear and thin, usually flavored with more vegetables, fish, or bones cooked relatively briefly at a light simmer so as not to cloud the broth. Each choice comes with sprouts, a soft boiled egg and a slice of pork. You can add extra noodles or pork for $1 - 3. Service was good and fast, even for a weekday lunch. One might balk at the steep price, one bowl runs $12+, but considering competitive options, and the expertise invested in the authenticity, I think it's well worth it, occasionally. I visited Ramen Ray opening week and decided to wait a little while before returning to try to ensure a fair review. Opening week was an absolute zoo -- throngs of people appeared that had been long awaiting the opening after what seemed like a significant delay. Sure, the menu was limited, there were no substitutions, there was no to go option, we waited for a table to open up, and we waited for our food opening week...but it was worth it. First visit in, I opted for the Miso and the hubs got the Shoyu. We packed ourselves in to a table with some other folks as it was a necessity for space to be shared in order to sit down at all. Both bowls of ramen were really good, but I preferred my Miso as I am not a huge fan of salty bases. The corn was a surprisingly nice touch and the seasonings were perfect. At about $30 for 2 of us -- not including anything to drink aside from the free water and tea provided on a cart at the front -- we knew that this would not be a frequent splurge -- but we enjoyed it very much none the less. I returned at lunch time for my second visit and was pleased to see that they had taken down the strange half wall near the door to open up the space a bit more, and that the menu had slightly expanded to include a full on Spicy Miso option - not just "spicy" as an add in - so I HAD to get it despite the $15 price tag after tax pre-tip. As of now, there is still no take-out option, and there is a sticky note disclaimer attached to the menu to "come hungry as there are no to-go options". We were easily able to find a table to ourselves -- perhaps because it was 1230 on a Tuesday or because the weather was nearing 70 degrees and a hot bowl of ramen wasn't on most people's minds. Lucky us. So let me tell you about my Spicy Miso experience in one word. Yes. So much yes. It was perfectly spicy and the flavors blended so well! The bowl was served steaming hot and the aroma was intoxicating. Pro-tip -- make sure you give the spicy miso a good stirring from jump as there is some spicy goodness that will lurk on the bottom and sneak up on you at the end! And I say that in the happiest, spicy-lovinglyest way possible. SO much yum in one bowl! This is no broke college student Maruchan 10 cent ramen... Ramen Ray is the *real* Ramen. When we walked in there were plenty of people still dinning there and it appeared some were still waiting for their food. The cashier asked me if I wanted it for here or to go, when I replied for here she rolled her eyes at me! My fiancée and I both eat very quickly so I knew we would be out of there before 9. Then when I asked her what kind of beer they had she told me she doesn't drink beer so she doesn't know..... I had to ask her to hold up a can from the case because you couldn't see the label from outside. Simple enough, I went with the first beer she held up. We sat down and someone else had to bring me my beer because she was underage, totally fine. However she forgot to give us the Mountain Dew we also ordered, when he went to grab it she seemed like we were bothering her when she handed it to them. Then this is what really gets me....when the person who was bringing us our food asked which table it went to - I heard her say again in a loud annoyed voice..."well I asked them if they wanted it for here or to go, and she said for here" then she ripped some piece of paper. I started laughing because I thought this was all so ridiculous. Long story short- I would come back here because the food is delicious but I will never come back within an hour of them closing. It was extremely rude how she treated us, and I wish I could take back the tip I left. Oh and by the way we were out of there by 8:55pm. I have to say, this is the most authentic ramen you can get in the area. I went to Japan this summer, and had plenty of ramen that was delicious. So, coming back to the United States, I was worried I wouldn't have quality ramen for a long time. When I entered, the employees welcomed me, and were very considerate the entire process. I ordered Miso Ramen, and as you can tell, it was so good that I forgot to take a picture of it! It reminded me of the ramen you would find in Japan. Many of the ingredients they use, such as their noodles, come from Japan. Ramen Ray also has drinks that are popular in Japan such as Calpis, Asahi, and Sapporo. The atmosphere is very relaxing. While it is a small shop; I never felt crowded. I ate my food in peace, and was able to admire the decorations on the wall (including recent Halloween decorations). My first trip to Ramen Ray was not a disappointment! In fact I see this quickly becoming my lunch spot with it being so close to my work. The small building holds big bowls full of delicious ramen. I wasn't sure about portion size so I ordered a half size miso ramen with an extra soft boiled egg and a 5 piece order of pot stickers. The food came out so fast and souper hot the pot stickers were fantastic, a nice crisp caramelized bottom with delicious filling! They were gone in a flash! The ramen was hands down amazing. The bone broth/miso was rich and flavorful. The prom was tender and juicy and I definitely should have ordered an extra slice. The noodles, oh the noodles were so delicious. I'm not a big fan of bean sprouts so towards the end I was picking around them, but the corn topping was perfect. Would get the Shio again in a heartbeat. Also tried the veggie as well as pork gyoza. The pork is the way to go. Though I would want to try the veggie ramen.
