After working, then seeing Brian, I was ready for dinner. My BESTIE lives right around the corner, so I called her up so we could have some girl talk. We decided to try Ramen 101 since it had been on one of my lists of places to try in Sacramento. Ramen 101 is located in the very busy corner of Marconi and Fulton in Sacramento. Over the years, businesses has really boomed because I remember when these shopping centers weren't here. The biggest landmark here would be Trader Joe's. We were excited and looking forward to a bowl of savory hot ramen. That just happened to be the first thing on the menu, which is located above the registered even you first walk in. The menu offered ramen bowls with pork belly, grilled chicken, and tofu. You can also choose your spice level, not spicy, mild, meduim, and spicy. There are also appetizers and rice plates available. I like to ask what the most popular. We were told the Tonkotsu Ramen and the Black Garlic Ramen are their most popular of the 7 options. We decided to go with those 2 ramen bowls and added on lumpia and spam musubi totaling $55.81. Ramen 101 was mostly filled with tables, with a bench seat on the back wall. Inside was a very modern esthetic. The samurai mural in the wall was a very nice touch. There is a beautiful outdoor seating area. It was shaded and covered with plants and lots of green. We ended up sitting inside bc of how warm it was. First, our appetizers. The lumpia was 6 pieces priced at $9.95. I felt like it lacked flavor. It also would have been better if the sweet & sour dipping sauce was put into a small plastic cup instead of giving us 2 small packets. The spam musubi was 2 normal size pieces priced at $6.95. Those were very delicious. They were warm, soft and savory all at once. When our ramen arrived, they were picture perfect. My Black Garlic Ramen was loaded with garlic seasoning and many pieces of black garlic. 2 pieces of pork belly, one bigger piece and one smaller. Julie's Tonkotsu ramen had a broth that was creamy and had kikurage mushrooms. Not listed in the description is corn... I actually would've chosen to leave that out.... bc I'm weird like that, lol. My Black Garlic Ramen was definitely full of garlic. I went with meduim spicy, but it was not spicy at all. The egg in it was the most delicious part.. soft boiled with that creamy yolk.. yummy! The soup didn't taste savory enough. It was missing something or watered down. I tried adding more chili oil and a little soy sauce to it... it helped, but it still lacked. For the pork belly, one of the pieces was very dry. Julie let me try her Tonkotsu ramen. Her's was very plain compared to my Black Garlic Ramen, but I think that is to be expected with the amount of garlic was garlic I was consuming. The garlic in mine was great, but the broth on both just wasn't savory. One of her pork belly pieces was dry as well. Overall, the spam musubi was the best part of our dinner. I did see someone order the short ribs with rice plate and it looked very good. I'm thinking that next time, I am going to try those. If I am craving ramen again, I probably won't get it here, but it was nice to try somewhere new. read more

I decided to try this place out yesterday after receiving some good news (and being really hungry in the process). I came in around 11:15, and I was the only one there. I decided to order the black garlic ramen. I also ordered extra broth and extra noodles, which I usually do when I order ramen from a restaurant. However, the extra broth was $6.50, and the extra noodles were $4.50. The price for the extra noodles seemed ok, but $6.50 for extra broth?? Yikes. But, like I said, I was celebrating and hungry, so I bit the bullet. The soup came out fast, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I honestly didn't think the soup was going to be as good as it was. The broth was smooth, creamy, and the garlic flavor didn't overpower it. Also, they did a good job with the egg. The yolk inside was gooey, but not runny. It might seem like something slight, but I get kinda annoyed when ramen places just basically throw a hard boiled egg into the soup. That's not how it's done. This place did it right. One thing that was kinda of weird was that my extra soup and noodles came out in a seperate bowl from my main order. I was under the impression that my extras would be put into one bowl, to make a bigger bowl of ramen. It wasn't a big deal, but it seemed unnecessary to have to keep adding my extra noodles and broth to the main bowl. So overall, I think 4.5 stars would be an accurate rating for this place. It was clean, had good service, and the ramen itself was really good, not to mention that they did a good job with the egg. I only took off half a star for the steep price on the extra broth, and having to keep transferring the extras to the main bowl. With the tip, I ended up spending about $33. Yea, it was a little steep, but sometimes you have to treat yourself. Its definitely worth a try. read more

I was craving ramen and wanted to check out a different ramen spot that wasn't my usual go to's. I decided to try Ramen 101 as I heard mixed experiences from friends both good and bad. I walk in a the cashier greeted me and asked if I was ordering to go or dining in? I was dining in and she handed me a menu to look over. I ordered the Tonkonsu ramen and a whole grilled squid. I paid and she said I can sit anywhere I'd like. It was different as I usually paying at other ramen places after eating lol. I get my squid it was okay. I've had better other places, but it wasn't the worst. My ramen on the other hand for the price they were definitely stingy with the noodles and actually while I was there a customer complained about the lack of noodles he paid and they remade his food no questions asked, I should have said something as well , but didn't. The ramen broth was good, the pork meat wasn't very flavorful the egg was cooked more than I liked as well. I just cannot get past how stingy they are. I probably won't be back. There are so many fantastic ramen restaurants in Sac that is place is completely forgettable. The inside is nothing special there is plenty of seating and a tv for your enjoyment. read more

Not everywhere does or it's chicken in a pork ready bowl. The edamame was hair and quick to arrive. Which there was a garlic option but very happy with what was provided. The patio seating is also very nice. A lot of shame as it is on the west side of this corner building so gets the late afternoon-evening sun. The lush vines keep the sun out. Located near Trader Joe's, this Ramen 101 is a good takeout or dine-in option for ramen or Hawaiian plate lunches and appetizers. Ordering off the overhead signs is easy as you enter, and if you're dining in, they will bring your food out to your table. The indoor dining area had lacquered wooden tables with 3 TVs showing different shows, and there is a nice outdoor patio too. Our kaki fry (fried oysters) was excellent with a crunchy batter encasing tender oysters and accompanied by a slightly spicy mayo dipping sauce. The pork belly (labeled as char siu) bowl was pretty good, especially when adding a side of two scoops of the with Mac tuna salad. The chicken-BBQ beef plate included tender marinated chicken, along with sliced beef that came out a little dry but with good Hawaiian style flavor. The rice portions were on the smaller side and a bit gummy. The Mac tuna salad was excellent. I've only been to this location once but it was nice! Came for lunch with a friend and it satisfied the craving. The tonkotsu ramen was lovely, not the best I've had in town but it was tasty. I'll probably try a different ramen the next time I come. The restaurant is small and when we came it wasn't busy. It is a very chill vibe, we came during the day so it was lively/ didn't feel like a busy night spot. From how difficult it was to order and understand what each bowl contained when asking the girl behind the counter I felt ripped off more than anything else. They deliver to your table when done. I was so excited to try the black garlic ramen which was loaded with black garlic (not just black garlic oil like other ramen places). I'm not typically big on ramen, but this place was a nice surprise! I stopped by after grocery shopping and had a great experience. The woman that helped me was so nice and had such great customer service. She really honestly went above and beyond. She made multiple recommendations with details and was nice enough to bring me everything, including filling my drink, since I had my hands full with my daughter. Aside from the great customer service, I found the ramen to be so good! I got the tonkotsu and it was perfect. Other places I've tried were either too salty or way too rich for my liking, but not here. The soft boiled egg was my favorite. I also ordered gyoza, which was good also. I takoyaki was also flavorful and nicely cooked. The portion sizes for everything were fairly large in my opinion. We went with crab Rangoons to start and they were delicious and cooked crispy golden to the bite. We got some tonkotsu ramen and chicken ramen. All dishes were on point.
