If you keep your expectations reasonable, the food here is pretty good. You can't beat the moist, tender pork bbq both pulled and shredded. The sides leave a lot to be desired, but they have a fresh salad bar and some decent desserts. You can fill up and be back on the road for around $12. You really have to have a taste for southern cuisine. No frills with atmosphere. BUT, the fried chicken is everything one could imagine such a thing to be, and the pulled pork is silky without being greasy, flavorful without being obnoxious. Ate there with folks who grew up in the south and said the collards and Brunswick stew were very good. read more

We are heading north in 95 and see a few signs for this place. So we stop just as they are opening and have say the folks here are just wonderful. The entire staff was very accommodating and so friendly. One of our daughters has celiac disease and they were so helpful. We did the buffet was was very simple and delicious!! Ralphs offers a menu plus a buffet with traditional southern fare. The prices are very reasonable. The wait staff are both friendly & accommodating. Unfortunately I cannot recommend their food. We chose to order off the menu (not the buffet). None of our food was served hot. This consisted of the main dish of fried chicken & chopped pork, or any of the side dishes consisting of potatoes, Brunswick stew & beans. The waitress apologized & took back some of the food to replace it with equally cooled food. It was fairly tasty but it was not hot. No seasoning, no flavor. Pulled pork was bland and sauce was blander. Hushpuppies were the worst I've ever had, no flavor, closer to unsweet doughnuts than hushpuppies. just horrible. not even bbq. red sauce and vinegar sauce were both horrible. overpriced. no sides with the sandwich and they were way to expensive to be worth ordering. ive had better bbq in Australia and California by far. read more

We have been to Ralph's several times-we usually try to time our frequent trips up and down I95 to coincide with dinner time at Ralphs. If you like barbeque, you'll love Ralph's. They have 3 different kinds of barbeque on the buffet-2 types of the eastern North Carolina style, and one with a nice sauce on it. Out of this world hush puppies. The rest of the buffet is typical steam table type of food, I don't waste too much time on it and concentrate on the barbeque and hush puppies; the brunswich stew is good though. My parents her last summer and my mother, who is extremely picky, raved about the barbeque with the sauce. Service is efficient and friendly. Definitely beats the chain restaurants on the other side of the exit. There may be better barbeque in North Carolina , but overall this is the best choice in this area. We used to love Ralph's for many years and eagerly looked forward to making that stop anytime we were on 95. I dont know what has happened but the service, quality of food everything has gone downhill and not worth the time to stop. You will wait forever in takeout which comes out cold ...no sauce...the worst French fries I have EVER had..cold and limp. Go spend your money on chick filet but avoid this place...they have lost a 25 year plus patron. read more

My family and I have been eating here for over 30 years on the way to the beach. It's a perfect lunch spot for Eastern Carolina chopped BBQ. Granted it's a no fuss place, but it has friendly and fast service. Buffet offers most of the classic southern comfort foods at a very affordable price. Hot and fresh hush puppies are served at your table almost as soon as you sit down. We'll continue to patronize this place for the next 30 years. Yum! read more

My relative chose this place as it was a place for us to meet so neither one had to drive too far. I read the reviews before I left and decided to forego the buffet since we're not big eaters and I wanted quality over quantity. It's easy to spot the patrons who ordered the buffet. I looked at the buffet and I wouldn't eat it unless I was starving. I ordered fried chicken and french fries. It came with 'home made cole slaw'. The chicken was cold and greasy. Likewise the fries. Before ordering, I had asked if the chicken was freshly cooked or just taken off the buffer. I never complain about food since I'm not in the kitchen watching. The 'cole slaw' was chopped so fine the particles were like small grains of sand. The taste wasn't too good either. Most of the cole slaw wasn't eaten. The potato salad tasted like it came out of a jar. No chunks, rather creamy. Just a few bites were taken. We make far better food at home than that. We all ordered something different and no one was happy about the food. Yes, it's cash only and the ATM was broken but I made sure that I brought cash with me. Besides, who goes traveling with next to no cash? Other people here complained that the place is like a cafeteria. Huh? It's like any other restaurant of its class. And, no, the place doesn't smell funny. No alcohol (beer, wine) is available. I wish I could remember the name of the other BBQ place in eastern NC (about an hour or so south of Ralphs) that had absolutely fantastic southern fried chicken. The place was a somewhat of a dump in an absolutely lousy location but the food was terrific. Service was very good, everyone was friendly. Very easy access -- right off of 95. Can't miss especially with all of the signs and the huge parking lot. We would never go back. read more

I discovered this place about 8 years ago while attending the Peanut and Pork Festival in Emporia, VA. I asked the locals if there were any good barbeque placaes nearby (being i n southside VA, I would have thought there would be) and was told you had to cross into NC to get good barbeque. Ralphs is not that far from the Va/NC border just off I 95. I was in heaven when we go to Ralphs!! I loved their pulled pork and their vegetables were wonderful as well. Not really sure what the people that gave this place 5 stars are smoking. This place is horrible. The first clue should have been that you can't smell that BBQ smell from the parking lot. We walked in and were greeted w an aroma of fried catfish that could stop a train. The buffet looked very unappetizing. Staff was friendly and hush puppies are good. The BBQ on the other hand was fairly flavor less. Anyone who thinks this is good BBQ has never had real NC BBQ. I would opt for smithfieds over this place. read more

We ordered a cheeseburger (I know, but we have teenagers), 1 1/2 racks of ribs, and the chopped bbq platter with fries, mac n cheese, green beans, potato salad, baked beans, and some kinda of cinnamon apple concoction. For desert, banana pudding. While the cheese burger and fries were really good, the ribs not at all! The green beans were canned and overcooked, the collards a tad sweet. The potato salad was ok, but the Mac n cheese and baked beans were a flop. The chopped bbq with a vinegary essence to it. The banana pudding just so-so. We paid about $55 for family of four, but would have enjoyed the Golden Corral a bit more. This was a travel stop on our way to GA. We wouldn't stop there again. read more

This is your place for a home cooked meal - however you like it, either buffet line during normal meal hours, or order from the menu. The sides are just what you'd expect, collard greens, mashed and sweet potatoes, with cobblers for desert and the BBQ is either pulled pork, or beef brisket every day. If you are travelling and need once nice sit down meal to break up your trip and allow you to relax during the meal, this is it. We just stopped by here for takeout while on a road trip that we take frequently. Got back in the car and took one bite of a hush puppy and knew that these were old, stale, and most likely reheated in a microwave. The fries weren't much better: soggy, old, and lukewarm. The pulled pork sandwich was a bit better, but didn't have much flavor. If you stop by here for takeout, do a taste test to ensure freshness before getting back on the road. read more

Read the reviews and this place did no t disappoint. Best fried fish I have ever had. They cut up a huge trout filet into 5 good size pieces. Perfectly breaded and fried. Green beans delicious. My dad had the cheeseburger and he loved it even with the coleslaw on it. Mom had the buffet and enjoyed all of it...BBQ and amazing Southern home cooking. Service was awesome as well. We stopped at this place on our trip from New York City to Savannah. If you're not circus fat, you are going to feel a little out of place here. This is an all-you-can-eat barbeque buffet, so the folks who are on that 5000-calorie-a-day diet are right at home. But regardless of whether you're skinny or fat, the food is worth a stop, particularly if you're a Yankee and you want to sample some East Carolina barbeque. Load up on some pulled pork at the buffet and make sure you cover it with the vinegar sauce, the way the locals do. The mac-and-cheese is great and you can't pass up the banana pudding with Nilla wafers dessert. The whole thing is very cheesy, but if you're a slumming Yankee who wants to taste some local Carolina cuisine, this place has been dishing it up since 1940 and is probably as good as you're going to get between Richmond and Charleston. It's right off the Interstate, so you can get gas and gas in one easy stop. Both should last you about 300 miles. read more

My husband is from NC and we are big fans of Carolina BBQ buffets. We were very disappointed with Ralph's. The Friday buffet is pricier ($12) than the rest of the week and was very limited. There were no collards or greens one would typically expect on a NC buffet and no mac and cheese. The only green veggie was green beans that looked like they came from a jumbo can and anemic iceberg lettuce in the salad. The potato salad and cole slaw did not taste homemade and were generic. The fried chicken was awful (too bready and greasy) and the fried fish was cold. It was $5.10 for children and the only thing our daughter would eat were the baby carrots and grape tomatoes I picked out of the salad. There were only two desserts (banana pudding and chocolate cake), but I did not try either of them. On the plus side, the buffet had chopped and pulled pork and the vinegar sauce was excellent, some of the best that I've had. Ralph's is cash only. If you want to try a great NC barbeque buffet, check out the Sandpiper in Fayetteville or Love's in Shallotte. read more
