Looks like Rakar Dumpling house is celebrating their two years anniversary this weekend with 50% discount on any dumplings and also giving a complimentary pork soup dumplings per person. Talking about ambiance, this place is so well designed with a lot of plants, antiques, rock carvings etc., with a lot of natural light. Tables can easily hold anywhere from a group of 2 to max. 8-10 folks. We ordered a lot of food in the kiosk and all the food has been served one by one within 5-10 minutes. Finally made it here for the dumplings, but amazed to find to so much more. Beautiful decor, and even a furniture store inside! We enjoyed pork dumplings. First time in, and I was greeted by a smiling, friendly face and an explanation that I was to order my food from the kiosk. THIS IS IMPORTANT: this restaurant is very much a serve yourself place. You order your food. You get your drink. You get your own chopsticks, plates, silverware, to-go boxes, and there is a place to put your dirty dishes if you feel so inclined. etc. Not necessarily a bad thing, but not typical in my experience. The kiosk is okay except for navigation. I wanted to scroll down but I was supposed to hit the arrow to see more. It's nice to see pictures of everything. We didn't have to wait long for our appetizer and other dishes began to trickle out over time. I would think of this a family sit down restaurant in a sense. Grab little plates and pull from the larger plates they bring out with your food. The food was okay. Not incredible. My fried dumplings looked steamed except a small place on the bottom. The ambiance feels very fancy at first glance, but a lot of the decorations to the side can actually be purchased. I found this a little odd with the large price tags. The music is so peaceful and the place is ideal for conversation. Styrofoam cups for your water and the self-serve nature keeps this from coming across as a fancy sit-down restaurant. This is our second visit to the restaurant we're super hungry. It was rainy and gloomy weather and I thought it's a great idea to have noodles, dumplings, and some soup. I can definitely give 10 out of 10 for how great the ambiance and how nicely it is decorated inside. The table for set up really good very clean and they're ordering is really good because you don't have to stand in line. They are kiosk and it's an automated system where you go order yourself , based on your name, they will come and give you the food. It's an open seating, very organized every table has its own sauces etc. Let's talk about the food today. We ordered beef lo mein combo it was absolutely turned on 8/10 very delicious and meat was cooked perfection and has a great flavor. We ordered chicken fried rice I would give 6/10 It was missing some flavor the rice after 2 to 3 minutes it started to become hard. We ordered dumplings it was great 10/10. The fish soup was extremely bad. It almost felt like it was smelling like something went bad into that fish soup I could literally not eat that we left the whole thing and we went to the counter to tell the staff that the fish soup is smelling bad and literally nobody address our problem they said , the head chef is on leave today and the appetizer chef made the main course and all the soups. I'm sorry and they didn't even fix it. They didn't even acknowledge that if I need any replacement for it because I literally told them that it was gone bad. There's no getting around it: Rakar isn't worth it. From the food to the service to the ambiance, nothing was really up to par, and there are much better options in the KC area. My group and I ordered the Pork Dumplings, Crab Rangoons, Egg Drop Soup, Glazed Char Siu, and General Tso's Chicken. As much as I wanted to love the offerings here, the Pork Dumplings were underwhelming, the Char Siu was dry, and the other dishes felt very Panda Express, but for 3x the price. When you walk in, you order from a kiosk, pick up your food at the counter when called, and get your own chopsticks/sauces/dishes from a common area. It's not super clear that this is how it works because the space is fairly large, and a corner of it is a small market area. The setup is a bit awkward and makes the space feel huge and empty, so there's no real ambiance and the whole thing feels like eating in the restaurant section of an airport. All around, I was fairly disappointed and would much rather opt for Monkey King in Lenexa for Cantonese food (most similar to Rakar), Sichuan Dynasty in north OP for Sichuan-style Chinese food, and Hong Kong Star in Olathe all-around. If you're looking for extra special dumplings and are willing to spend a little more, I'd recommend Chewology in Westport. read more

One of the best dumplings I've had in KC! Very authentic and homemade. They have several kiosks that you can order from. After ordering, it is basically seat yourself at any table that is available. We started with 1 order of Pork Dumplings and realizing how delicious they were, we went back to the kiosk and order another order of Shrimp Dumplings. My husband and I went to Rakar Dumpling House on Sunday evening around 4:30/5pm. The staff was super friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is spacious with a variety of seating for small to large groups. The aesthetic is homey with lots of home decor with tags still on (for sale). And you order via counter service (kiosks). Your name is called and your order is brought out to your table. Staff is very appreciative if you clean up your own plates (place them in the bins above the trash cans). For boba, I got the semi-sweet mango which was light and refreshing. My husband can't resist a smoothie so he got a mango smoothie, too. In addition to the pork dumplings (which were very good, by the way), we ordered egg rolls, crab rangoon, and pork fried rice. My daughter and I went to enjoy lunch and ordered two lunch specials of fried rice with beef and general tsao chicken. We enjoyed both but added some extra spice to add a bit more flavor. tl;dr: Decent for the area and worth it to look around the home goods section, but what I tried was pretty mediocre. The menu could be condensed because some items just replace the meat of choice without changing much else. Half of the store is actually a home goods place and you'll see decor throughout the restaurant with price tags. I like the decor, but was in a rush and couldn't look around more. You order on a screen, pick up when your name is called, then bus your own dishes. I like the quick serve vibe. Service was friendly and helpful when I needed help. However, I'd don't think I'd come back for any of the dishes I tried. I grew up where Asian food was way more common and of better quality, so while I think this might be fine for more Americanized palates, I don't think it's worth eating out for. Beef dumplings ($6): I preferred these to the pork ones (normally I prefer pork). The beef ones had a heartier, more savory flavor. I find their traditional dumpling sauce too salty. The pan fry was good, though. Still, I've found frozen dumplings at the grocery store that were just as good or better. Popcorn chicken ($6): It looked undercooked, but it was actually fine. The flavoring was strange, like the coating had chicken bouillon instead of anything else I'd associate with popcorn chicken. I expected it to be more like Taiwanese popcorn chicken, but it wasn't. Luo song tang (beef and vegetable soup, $6): I was pleasantly surprised to see this on the menu because it's something I associate more with Hong Kong-style cafes. It's a sweet, almost ketchup-flavored tomato soup. Even though the beef cut isn't normally the style that goes in this soup, it was soft and velvety. The onions and cabbage were crunchier than I'm used to, which I didn't like. The macaroni in it really made it feel Hong Kong-cafe style, even though that's not normally how I've had this soup either. This new restaurant was already up to speed during my dine-in lunch. The char siu barbecued pork lunch combo ($12.00) included rice, veggies, choice of soup and four dumpling slices. The soup was served just four minutes after I ordered at one of the two kiosks and the entrée was served eight minutes later. The generous amount of pork wasn't especially lean, and the cooked broccoli was served at room temperature, but the dumplings and egg drop soup were pretty good. A variety of condiments were available. I found the dining area to be clean and new with plenty of natural light, a water feature and calming instrumental music, while the service from each employee I encountered was professional and polite. The menu included dumplings, appetizers, soups, rice dishes, noodle bowls, fried rice, lunch combos and a variety of teas including bubble tea and milk tea. Headed to Rakar in Leawood for a team lunch during the week with colleagues. While waiting on everyone, had the opportunity to check out the actually really well priced & quite unique home decor items and furniture they had for sale. The ordering concept is cool; you go up to the counter and check out their menu on one of the few screens and place your own order. I was excited to hear they had a lunch dumpling combo but disappointed when I realized it was only available with pork dumplings and I don't do pork. So, ended up ordering the lunch Beef Lo Mein with an appetizer order of Lamb Dumplings. The Lo Mein could use more flavor and the hot chili garlic sauce they had on the tables helped. Dumplings were tasty. What I didn't love: 1. For a work group that'd normally be on one tab, the ordering system didn't work as we all ended up paying out of pocket. 2. I requested an email receipt but never received a receipt or email. 3. Our table of 9 ended up getting our meals all at different times including one person getting their meal after we were all done. 4. Several of us got our entrees delivered first and appetizers afterwards. 5. Didn't love you had to go back to the counter to ask for water. 6. One of our teammates who was seated in the middle asked for something from the lady that delivered his food, and she told him to get up and find it on the shelf himself when that required multiple people to have to get up. So, cool concept but I wish they had more variety of menu offerings including more lunch dumpling combo options and options behind Beef Lo Mein that include non-breaded beef. And a little more flexibility when requested like delivering water and a simple request to the table would go a long way. One of the very few times where the camera did not eat first DoorDashed chicken dumplings, chicken feet, hot and sour soup, and saw that they also sell their house made chili oil by the jar, so I got that too. Their dumplings are small, more bite sized. Great meat to wrapper ratio. One of my favorite hot and sour soups in the area. Their chili oil has fresh garlic, it is very spicy and absolutely amazing. Chicken feet could have been saltier, but delicious nonetheless! We'll be ordering from here again. An amazing lunch experience! The atmosphere is more like a beautiful, relaxing antique shop that happens to serve some delicious dumplings. It is a new restaurant that replaced a local favorite, so we were a little bit hesitant, but this is quite the upgrade. Staff was fast with our food and very friendly the entire time. I have being living in Kansas City for over 13 years and we have travel everywhere, and one of the things I missed is those soup dumplings you find in Seattle, the ones you bite and a flavor explosion happen in your mouth and let me tell you as soon as I took my bite, I was transported! They look like the normal ones you may have try around but they are not those, they are another level of deliciousness and juiciness! You order your food at the kiosk, you get your own water and there are utensils, napkins & to go boxes at a station. However I would not return due to the food lacking any flavor. I appreciated the decorative items that were throughout the restaurant, it made the place feel less like a fast-food/takeout place and more like a quality restaurant. Everything is self-serve. You order at a kiosk, pick your own table (do this before ordering as you need your table number), get your own napkins and chopsticks, pour your own water. The tea was generous on the hot water, but short in the tea leaves. Hot water would be a good comparison. Also, this place is also a cheap furniture and home decor store for some strange reason. Overpriced, underwhelmed personally. We've experiencing much better tasting. Definitely keeping their overhead low because it's all pretty much self service. Personally for 2 meals with 2 starters at $60 I'd prefer to be waited on not order at a kiosk, get my own dining plates, utensils, napkins, basically set my own table, get my own drinks. It didn't blow us away but nothing was bad- except that the soup dumplings had barely any soup. The music is relaxing and the interior is very nice. The food came out FAST, and tasted fresh. The not great: The system to get your food is confusing- you pay up at the front kiosks first, which means you decide on a tip before your meal experience. Our servers never once checked on us or asked how anything was, and so had I tipped after, it would had affected what we left. They brought the food and then forgot about us.
