I went to HAMU Bakery for the first time recently. The hours are a bit odd (I wish they were open in the morning as I associate a lot of bakery items as morning / mid-morning treats), but I finally made my way to try after having on my list for a while to check out. A lot of the items were gone / sold out already. I asked the woman at the counter (possibly owner?) what she recommended and said it was my first time in. She was so nice! Great customer service. Fair warning--come too late in the day and the shelves will be pretty empty although there may be stuff left in the display case. Friends and neighbors have been raving about this place and I'm so glad that I finally made it over. The people who work here are so sweet and helpful and they directed me towards lots of delicious things. I especially loved their almond pastry with layers of almond paste- oh my goodness I died and went to almond heaven! We also tried cream puff buns, and some kind of bun with nuts (walnuts?) in them- I can't remember the name of them. I will definitely be back to try more fun stuff! I walked into this Taiwanese bakery expecting to grab a quick treat. Nothing dramatic. Just a little snack. A bun or two. Maybe a pastry. I was not expecting to have a full-blown spiritual awakening between bites--but here we are. The woman behind the counter greeted me with a smile warmer than the inside of a fresh red bean bun. She didn't speak English. I don't speak Mandarin. We just stood there, smiling awkwardly, united by a shared understanding that something beautiful was about to happen. I pointed at a pineapple bun. She nodded like a wise monk who had seen thousands walk this path before. First bite? I left my body. My eyes rolled back so far I saw childhood memories I forgot I had. I was transported to another dimension made entirely of soft, golden carbs. I could feel my chakras aligning. My taxes suddenly made sense. I forgave my enemies. I understood love. I don't know what they put in that bun. I don't know if it was butter, magic, or the quiet power of an auntie who has been baking since before I was born--but I ascended. Then I tried the taro bun. I wept. It was so creamy, so perfectly balanced, it was like being hugged by the universe. I tried thanking her--I said "Thank you!" and bowed slightly, hands together like I was at temple. She smiled and nodded. Maybe she didn't understand the words, but she definitely understood what her pastries had just done to me. Taiwanese bakery similar to 85 Degrees & JJ Bakery in CA. Call or order ahead on their site. They do special orders. Love their crepe cakes, savory breads w/ pork sung, chocolate polo, chocolate ice cream bread, breads w/ taro, & teas w/ sea salt cream. All of the desserts are not too sweet which is the BEST pairing to their teas. Make sure to eat the chocolate ice cream bread ASAP before it melts! Thankfully we brought a cooler w/ ice packs so it survived our drive home. The staff are kind & asked if my drink was sweet enough. They adjust the sweetness level from 0%, 30%, 50%, 70%, to 100%. The baker just took out some Portuguese egg tarts freshly hot from the oven when we just arrived. Delish w/ that caramelized top! The bakery is a to go or delivery spot so find a great park nearby to eat or in our case by the bakery parking lot eating freshly baked egg tarts. They have cute knitted items & hair ties by the register & dog treats. Sometimes they have dog treats for your dog to eat. They also have frozen homemade dumplings from Jasmine Garden which is right next door to HAMU Bakery. read more

The first time I tried their baked goods was years ago at their Lawrence location and I have always remembered their Snow White pastry. It was so light, fluffy, and the custard in the middle was "not too sweet." So glad they opened a location here! We got the Snow White, matcha crepe slice, basque cheesecake, and fluffy cheesecake and will be back to try the other pastries. I highly recommend the Snow White! First time checking this place out and I will be going back! The decoration and aesthetic of the store is super cute and bright. There is a display of pastries varying from sweet to savory. I got the durian, matcha, and taro crepe cake. They were so delectable and such a delicacy. The taro flavor wasn't overpowering and had a soft filling. The matcha one was frozen and tasted more like green tea but the flavors were really present which I enjoyed. My favorite was the durian one. If you've never tried durian, please try this! Durian is a fruit from Asia and tastes so amazing in this crepe cake. The service was great! He was really helpful in helping me pick out what I was looking for. These pastries are the closest thing in KC to some of my favorite snacks from studying abroad in Hong Kong, and I'll definitely be back. A third of the photos are in the car because I couldn't wait until I got home to try them, and a third of the photos aren't even pictured because I was too excited about the rest and forgot. Double take of the Tiger Roll because she's beautiful from all angles. Basically, go try Beyond Bread. I got the Polo (Pineapple) Bun, the Tiger Roll, a Scallion and Pork Floss Bun, a Matcha Crepe Cake, a Ham and Cheese Bun, a Snow White, Passion Fruit Panna Cotta, and one of the cheesecakes. Everything was fresh, just the right level of sweet, and very reasonably priced. If you're not sure what to try, I would definitely recommend the Tiger Roll, the Snow White (kind of like a cakier cream puff), and the Passionfruit Panna Cotta. If you're in a cake mood, the crepe cake slices were great and 10/10 times I would recommend them over Tous Les Jour's cake slices. The savory items weren't my favorite here but I'd still be happy to pick up another Pork Floss (dried and shredded pork) and Scallion Bread if I'm in the area and looking for something more substantial than a pastry. read more

Little quaint bakeshop! My love for Matcha made me choose the Green Tea Mousse right off the bat as well as the Basque Cheesecake. I was so excited to see an Instagram story about this bakery (and a little sad that I don't live as close to this place as I used to). Their hours aren't great for me, but we were able to find time to stop in on a Saturday to grab several items to try. We were trying very hard to not purchase one of every item in this cute little shop. We each grabbed several random items to try. The staff was very friendly. My favorite item was the double cheese bread. I have dreams about it. I think the key is the loads of toasty cheese paired with the sweet bread! I also got the pork floss bread, which wasn't my favorite thing (but it was a personal preference thing, not that anything was wrong with it). I chose a buttermilk roll/bread, which also was not my taste, but I'm sure would be loved by others. Another item we enjoyed was called Snow White. We both really liked them, although I thought an addition of a bit of a strawberry or fruity flavor would add a bit of a welcome zing to the treat. After years of wishing for a chinese bakery in KC I finally found one- and turns out they've been open since 2013! It's a small bakery with both sweet and savory pastries each around $3. I've gotten the green onion + pork floss bun both times I've been and it's one of the best ones I've ever had. They put a generous amount of pork floss so there's no bland bites. Their fluffy japanese cheesecakes are the best I've ever tried (and I am a fluffy cheesecake fanatic). While most fluffy cheesecakes struggle with finding the balance between airiness and cheese flavor, their pillow top cake was so light with the perfect cheesy tang. I'm in love! read more

Their egg tarts are perfect and I always grab their cheesecake bites since they are so cheap! The baked goods are all super affordable so I always end up getting way more stuff than I plan on haha. A quaint and wonderful Cantonese bakery! This spot has some great baked goods that really hit that authentic Cantonese taste. I particularly love their pork floss & green onion buns, Polo Bao's (Pineapple Buns), and the crepe cakes. The shop is pretty small but clean and bright!
