I got the iced Salted Caramel Coffee with oat milk (extra sweet) and it was SO good! Parking can get a little crazy with the other food vendors in the same area, but there is more parking if you keep driving further back past the coffee shop and bar area. This was the perfect stop on our way to snorkeling up the road. The people are kind, the coffee is great, and the vegan goods are truly excellent. I had a turmeric bun that was stellar--not overly sweet, perfectly baked, and the turmeric gave it a more interesting flavor profile. My only quibble is that I wish they had some black tea, but I'll be back on my next round no matter what. read more

However, the turmeric drink was very strong and not sweet - more of a heads up if you're thinking about trying it! I want to love this place but after a couple visits it hasn't fully hit for me. Spent the afternoon with some much needed couple time and stopped in Kahuku for some Raised by the Waves. It was a bit later in the afternoon so they were out of what I would have preferred but the food was so good just the same. Places the order there to share for raw nachos and Kawelo Flat Bread. (I should have said no daiya cheese... I picked it off though) It took a bit longer for my order, about thirty minutes, but it was good, I'm never in a rush and if so, I'll order ahead. It's always a casual vibe- and they weren't busy at all. Was lucky to have a table in the shade, woot! Came to try out this place because i came across it on tiktok and coming across plant based restaurants is hard to find in Hawaii. I ordered the poke bowl and I added the fixins to get the whole experience. I added the seed cheeze, avocado, and pickled onion. I also added shoyu poke to try it. I was disappointed to see their portion sizing being SO off. To add avocado it's $4 and the seed cheeze was $4 and the pickled onion is $1. I moved the rice around to see if maybe the onions were on the bottom, they weren't. It was the smallest portions I've ever seen, they are much smaller than it looks in the photos. For $53, it was ridiculously small portioning. On top of that, there was a curly piece of hair on the shoyu beets. Had to go back a second time to ask them about the spicy beets that were supposed to be in the order and the girl did apologize as she thought I was substituting but placed it in a small side cup. They also need to double up on the bowls they use because when I picked up my order, the bowl was wet from the shoyu beets. read more

I have come before for the kualoa quesadilla and it was amazing. This time though it was pretty sad. Too sad that I didn't even want to take a picture. Kahuku can be quite the food desert on Mormon 'rest' day of the week. Even with all the food trucks, your best bet on a Sunday is either McDonald's or Turtle bay. So either the cheapest, or most expensive breakfast. We settled on trying this spot - Raised By The Waves - and for someone who is not too crazy about vegan food, I was impressed! We tried the Chuns bahn mi sando and banzai bagel. It did fill us up after being super hungry from a long night at a wedding on the north shore. There was live music surprisingly by our friend which set a nice ambiance. It's worth a try if you're in the area and hungry! read more

Somehow my experience was very far from that of my friend who recommended the place and pretty much every review here. I get being excited by a plant-based menu on an island that has scant few of them, but I've been vegetarian for 25 years, and this was a miss for me and my husband. He ordered the Aloha Bowl (organic greens, beet poke, beet hummus, quinoa, mushrooms, veggies, pickled onion, and sunflower tahini dressing; $17). Yeah, it's a $17 salad with about a tablespoon worth of hummus and not quite enough dressing to constitute being a salad but more of a veggie platter. I tried his mushrooms which were cooked and tasty but avoided the rest because all that raw veg would surely upset my stomach. I went with the grilled burrito (black bean chickpea balls, quinoa, mushrooms, and spinach in a spinach tortilla, grilled and served with ranch and extra avocado; $15). First, they were out of the black bean chickpea balls so offered to make it with falafel, which was fine. When it came out it was chock full of raw onion. I went back and reviewed the menu thinking I missed something. Nope. So surely I must have received the wrong item. I went back and was told the raw onion is part of some mix they use (also not on the menu??). I explained that I cannot have onion and they offered to remake it which was nice. But now I was just eating a wrap with falafel, quinoa, and fresh spinach (the mushroom also had onion I guess). The side of ranch was suuuuuuper garlicky. Like I'm pretty sure it's just an aioli sauce. And "extra avocado?" There was zero avocado. Glad they addressed my sensitivity, but honestly it was such a disappointing meal. read more
