Spent the afternoon with some much needed couple time and stopped in Kahuku for some Raised by the Waves. It was a bit later in the afternoon so they were out of what I would have preferred but the food was so good just the same. Places the order there to share for raw nachos and Kawelo Flat Bread. (I should have said no daiya cheese... I picked it off though) It took a bit longer for my order, about thirty minutes, but it was good, I'm never in a rush and if so, I'll order ahead. It was a quiet Sunday with only one person ahead of me. I ordered two drinks, two waffles, and a bowl, then waited an hour for everything. The two female staff members seemed a bit inattentive and didn't check on customers or update us about the delay, which was quite disappointing. I really think it might help if management looked into ways to improve this. Maybe I should have asked for a refund too. I even requested a cover for my bowl, but they didn't have one, not even foil, which was a bit surprising. Somehow my experience was very far from that of my friend who recommended the place and pretty much every review here. I get being excited by a plant-based menu on an island that has scant few of them, but I've been vegetarian for 25 years, and this was a miss for me and my husband. He ordered the Aloha Bowl (organic greens, beet poke, beet hummus, quinoa, mushrooms, veggies, pickled onion, and sunflower tahini dressing; $17). Yeah, it's a $17 salad with about a tablespoon worth of hummus and not quite enough dressing to constitute being a salad but more of a veggie platter. I tried his mushrooms which were cooked and tasty but avoided the rest because all that raw veg would surely upset my stomach. I went with the grilled burrito (black bean chickpea balls, quinoa, mushrooms, and spinach in a spinach tortilla, grilled and served with ranch and extra avocado; $15). First, they were out of the black bean chickpea balls so offered to make it with falafel, which was fine. When it came out it was chock full of raw onion. I went back and reviewed the menu thinking I missed something. Nope. So surely I must have received the wrong item. I went back and was told the raw onion is part of some mix they use (also not on the menu??). I explained that I cannot have onion and they offered to remake it which was nice. But now I was just eating a wrap with falafel, quinoa, and fresh spinach (the mushroom also had onion I guess). The side of ranch was suuuuuuper garlicky. Like I'm pretty sure it's just an aioli sauce. And "extra avocado?" There was zero avocado. Glad they addressed my sensitivity, but honestly it was such a disappointing meal. read more

Kahuku can be quite the food desert on Mormon 'rest' day of the week. Even with all the food trucks, your best bet on a Sunday is either McDonald's or Turtle bay. So either the cheapest, or most expensive breakfast. We settled on trying this spot - Raised By The Waves - and for someone who is not too crazy about vegan food, I was impressed! We tried the Chuns bahn mi sando and banzai bagel. It did fill us up after being super hungry from a long night at a wedding on the north shore. The food itself is fine. I think it needs more seasoning, but the selection is broad for plant-based folks and the ingredients used seem fresh and locally sourced. The uppers bagel was good, but nothing special. Again, both the beet hummus and the vegan cheeze needed more seasoning as it was pretty bland. They are pretty though! The service is really where I am dinging them in ratings. We placed a mobile order of two bagels and it said it would be ready in about 30-35 minutes, which is fine. But when I got there to check in, I tried getting the attention of one of the employees there multiple times and she would bring food out, I would try to get her attention but then she would walk away and act like she didn't hear me. We didn't get our food until 10:33, and they forgot about my friend's coffee whose mobile order was supposed to be ready at 10:15 and she didn't get it until around 10:40 after reminding them twice. All to say, the service is not great and the mobile ordering requires you to tip 15% as a "staff gratuity service charge." For that mandated gratuity, I would expect better service. While I had a more adventurous coffee with mushrooms and what not, the caffeine didn't give me the punch I really needed to wake up. I want to start by saying I'm not vegan but I enjoy vegan food and I'm no stranger as a lot of my friends are and honestly it's good for me and doesn't upset my stomach! I saw you could order online while we were in Kahuku but the wait was 30-45 mins for online orders so we walked over to order. It took just as long if not longer. The girl rang up the order wrong twice and had to correct it. The food was good and satiating. I was full after and the flavors were bright and new. The banzai bagel was good. Got the vegan cheese and it was nice. The bowl was also delicious and I liked all the fresh veggies. The addition of falafel would have been good if they weren't so dry - it was like eating drywall. I had to use nearly all the dressing to eat it! And I felt that they didn't give you enough dressing or enough sriracha considering I paid $0.50 for a little cup of it. But I love sriracha so maybe that's just me wanting more. It was a good experience but I probably wouldn't go again. read more
