Unfortunately, we had a terrible experience with Rainier Overseas Shipping for our move from California to Italy. Based on their in-person survey of our storage garage, I was given an estimate of $5,900. They picked up our belongings on January 2nd, without requiring any money up front. Over the course of the next two months I sent several requests for an invoice, but was always told it would be sent soon. Meanwhile, the items were taken to Houston. When I did finally receive an invoice, I was shocked that it was for $10,600. (I had added a guitar post-survey, which I had fully disclosed, and was told the price difference would be "minimal".) I contacted Rainier, and they lowered the price to $8,900 as a show of good faith. Since my belongings were in Houston, and I was now in Italy, I had no choice but to pay it. Our shipment was delivered at the end of May. Moving is stressful enough. Due to the poor communication and the huge increase in costs, I definitely cannot recommend Rainier Overseas Shipping. read more

I moved half-way around the world at the end of 2021. It was a hard time to manage international shipping but Rainier was very responsive every step of the way. Their partners both packing in California and unpacking in Victoria were great. They were all respectful working in our home and worked hard. We shipped a whole house of stuff and all arrived safely except 4 plates, a vase and a 1 inch gash in a sofa. The only reason I did not score them 5/5 was because the it all took longer and cost a little more than we had all planned. I've waited over a year to post this review, because I wanted to cool off from how upset I was. I've moved 50 times, and this was unequivocally the worst experience I've ever had. I was told my things would only fit into a smaller container. As an expert packer, I advised we could get more things in, if we used less of their wrapping paper, and more things I wanted to take like towels, linens, clothing, etc. I even said I'd waive insurance, as my overseas move was critical to take as much as I could fit. That's it. I had one shot to move out of the country, and this was my service to help. Only, the day of packing, the entire crew only spoke Spanish. They were under pressure to complete my packing way too fast for me to manage. In fact, I was treated as a nousance rather than the owner and customer. At one point, they stopped trying to listen to me, and I had a panic attack in my room. The moving coordinator was called, and instead of apologizing to me, he threatened to cancel my move and blamed me. As I unpacked, I realized the absurd amount of packing materials I paid to have shipped from US to Uruguay. On their website, they claim to "have a long history of successfully servicing the particular needs of our international shipments." I needed a team who spoke my language. Nope. I needed a team who would listen to me. Nope. I needed a team who would prioritize what I needed to take on this once-in-a-lifetime relocation, where everything left was gone for good. Nope. I needed a coordinator who would help make time for my move. Nope. I needed a response team who would apologize and take ownership. Nope. Listen, moving is stressful. This company was horrendous from start to finish. They disregarded my assessment of what could be packed, dismissed my packing input as we went along, then condescended to me about how things are done....for the insurance... Rich or Rebecca, if you're reading this, know that customer service means listening to customers and they are right. You did nothing but blame me for the situation, and it was scarring. Not only would I never recommend their services, but I'd recommend anyone planning to move overseas highly reconsider whether their things need the insurance the shippers claim. I would've taken 20 broken wine glasses and damaged goods over the panic attacks and demeaning treatment. For the first move I did all the research, called a bunch of companies, had estimates, and Rainier looked like the best. I moved from Seattle Washington to Porto, Portugal, including a full D7 Visa process and overseas shipping of my items. The Visa process and the entire process of moving overseas is very complicated and expensive, not just in the USA but coordinating all from here to over there. I interviewed multiple international movers and shippers in my process from the East coast to West coast of the US. I chose Rainier Overseas Movers based on comfort of my research, interviewing my contact person of the firm, all other companies they work with in process, experience, expertise within the country I was moving to and price to service and value. David and his team, including their partner firms were outstanding. The local mover they chose was excellent from the beginning of the process to the wood crating of my artwork and packaging of all other personal items to be shipped. Used Rainier for an international move recently. While their domestic service was good, the company on the other end which was Carl Hartmann in Germany, was a total joke of an operation. Having been in contact with them for over three months before the delivery of my goods to my new home, the day before things were scheduled to arrive, and with less than 24 hours notice I was informed out of nowhere that I had to pay almost 1200 Euro immediately or my items would not be delivered. They showed zero flexibility in regards to this and only cared about money. If I could not come up with the money, they would put my items into storage and commence charging me daily until I paid. "Insert truthful remark that Rainier threatened to sue me over here". Literally go with anyone else because it can't get any worse than this. Edit: The president of Rainier has commented and ignored my main complaint while not addressing my main remark. He has chosen to threaten legal action instead of addressing the issue of being told to pay money ASAP with less than 24 hours notice. How exactly does the truth qualify as slander? He is also apparently unaware of the apology email that I received from Carl Hartmann in regards to their actions. If, as the president of Rainier claims below, he welcomed contact, one would reach out personally instead of first threatening international legal action against a single customer over an online review. read more

I retired & moved to Portugal in Sept. 2019. We moved many times while in the US ARMY including 2 overseas moves and never experienced anything like this fiasco. I am a Portuguese resident but still a US citizen. I paid RAINIER OVERSEAS MOVERS almost $14,000 for a door-to-door move. That included packing boxes, loading the shipping container, contracting with land and sea shippers & contracting the moving co. in Portugal to deliver our goods to our house there and to unpack boxes. RAINIER also suggested their insurance co. UNIRISC. Allied Movers was contracted for the US packing & loading the shipping container. I checked the shipping container for holes and there were none visible. Allied movers did an excellent job packing the container and building dividing & bracing walls every few rows in the container. We were notified when the ship arrived in Lisbon, Portugal. No problems were mentioned during several phone calls to arrange delivery. The Portuguese movers, GLOBAL INTERNATIONAL RELOCATION, say they were told by RAINIER to hold the shipment for a week. My household goods were delivered to me on January 3. Everything was soaking wet,(no exaggeration) In addition, there were 43 boxes & items (out of a total of 400 missing). The Furniture was so very heavily water damaged that before GLOBAL was allowed to put the shipment into a semi-truck for delivery, the truck driver made them line the bed of his truck with several layers of cardboard. When it arrived, the truck looked like it had been packed by a two-year-old who just threw things in the back. RAINIER's insurance Co., UNIRISC, would NOT allow me to get an estimate for repairs. The contract actually says that getting an estimate might void the contract. I had to guess at repair costs. And I had to estimate the cost to replace the items in the missing boxes. I filed an insurance claim for over $7,600. The insurance offered to settle for $1,600 (-$1,000 deductible) I declined & they offered $2,300 (-$1,000 deductible.) The bill for the furniture restoration estimate alone is over $9,300. Of the 43 missing boxes & items, UNIRISC, refused to cover them, for any amount. I made a list of items that I know are missing. I have an estimated replacement value of $2,500. Clothing & linens packed in these boxes that were soaked took a month to get all washed. I had to take some things to XL washers. UNIRISC refused to cover the washing & cleaning at alI. I tried dealing with UNIRISC, they were totally unapologetic for the obvious negligence and unwavering in their offer. I tried dealing with RAINIER who are the ones who raised the offer from $1,600 to $2,300 (-$1,000) No one wants to take responsibility. Everyone blames someone else. But my household goods are ruined!!!! I believe the Portuguese movers, GLOBAL INTERNATIONAL RELOCATION was blatantly negligent. The Portuguese Movers blame the shipping Co. and the US movers. RAINIER, blames the Portuguese movers. My contract is with RAINIER who subcontracted the others. I tried to reach out to Richard Haas, the CEO of RAINIER movers and I did not get a response to 3 attempts. I do NOT recommend any of these companies. I was personally wronged by blatant negligence and they still would not apologize or cover the damage. None of this was "normal loss" for an overseas move. When it was time to pack up my apartment in Los Angeles and travel to Israel in February 2020, it was already clear that major disruptions could affect my relocation and I wanted a very reputable and experienced company. I left the United States shortly before the pandemic was declared, but my shipment was still in the United States. No one had experienced a pandemic move before, but Mark and Rainer were still able to load my shipment onto a container ship in the middle of the pandemic. Despite being hit by the greatest disaster in our lifetime, Rainier was able to meet both their time and cost estimates to ship my items overseas. The process of packing, storing, shipping, customs clearance, and unpacking far exceeded my expectations for normal times, let alone what were comparable to war time conditions. Worked with Don at Rainier. Compared to International van lines to move a few boxes ~ 100 cubic feet: - Quote was more ~$2200 vs $1750 , but less than ~9/10 other providers I contacted. Quote was all inclusive, no hidden charges and no suspicious paperwork, "deposit", "credit card charges", "bank transfer charges" etc that IVL had. - Don was available on WhatsApp for immediate updates on status. - They subcontract movers at the source and destination. At the destination the mover tried to ask for more money, but Don said to invoice them any amount they charge and they cancelled the charges. read more

Nobody called me yet after 5 days or sent me an email to excuse and explain how they will handle. On top: Sales pitch was great, scheduling worked out. Had various contacts at various points off the process, pricing was not confirmed (seems like intentionally, as finally I had less stuff as initially quoted). I would highly recommend working with Mark Lawson from Rainier Overseas movers. Mark and the other team members were extremely helpful and went one step beyond what I've expected. We've shipped a container from the San-Francisco Bay Area to Israel. We asked them to change the dates in which the container would be left in our parking and they were happy to do that without any extra charges (even though the standard in this business is that there are changing fees). The truck driver made sure that the container would fit my parking space - which wasn't trivial at all because of the other cars and obstacles (it probably took dozen attempts and roughly 20 minutes of optimizations). Mark went over the top to make sure that everything goes smoothly as possible and explained in detail every step in the process. I would definitely use them again! read more

I thought I was getting a good deal when Chuck said he would charge at cost. I had a lot broken and he stated since we did not have insurance they would not reimburse. It was gross negligence on their (Chuck's) part and the last movers showed us pictures of how the boxes fell onto the street and broke our wedding dishes. Also our 65in TV had cracked. I used Rainier for a move from Seattle to Thailand in March 2017 and the 2 star rating is a reflection of the unloading services in Thailand; the packing and services provided in Seattle were unbelievably bad and worth 0. I've moved many, many times over the years- both on my own and with moving services- and I've never had a worse experience. I've also never had nearly as much damage as on this move, despite the fact that as an international move using a 20' container, my items should have been more protected than during a local move with limited wrapping. My movers in Seattle were very, very late both days of packing- as in, HOURS late. Only one person in the crew spoke any English, which complicated the process throughout, and none were particularly friendly. My items were packed uniformly from one packer to the next only in terms of complete lack of logic; while plastic bags of hair ties were wrapped in wads of packing wrap in some boxes, there was no wrapping of glass hollow globes in a box shared with heavy metal bases in others. I found cast iron skillets packed on top of fine china and expensive framed art shoved into badly bent boxes without packing material. All of this was discovered before the items even left the house as the mountains of boxes made clear that wasted space was an issue. I spent the second day, non-stop, repacking about 80% of the boxes myself, which was all I had time for. Sure enough, the boxes I did not repack were just as poorly packed, as revealed by the broken items and excessive paper found upon unpacking in Thailand. A very expensive Ames fiberglass chaise was broken before it was even wrapped in Seattle as I watched the mover smack it into the brick wall while picking it up, to which he unapologetically pointed out the large crack along the back and claimed it had been that way previously. Multiple calls for assistance from the lead office, which were so helpful during booking, were met with extreme attitude and disregard. The company did eventually send out extra support and a manager to review the process but only on the 2nd day and after it was clear that many, many errors had occurred. It was too late to do anything to salvage the move by then and the increased manpower only served to mitigate the time lost by the late starts and slowing packing both days- still running several hours later than quoted even with the extra help. Nothing was done to mitigate the issues in packing or to offset the extreme stress caused by this entire process. In fact, not even an apology was forthcoming, despite me sending photos of the problems and repeatedly requesting assistance. Two months later, there were quite a few issues of communication and confirmation of my delivery, along with several changes to the delivery date. However, once we pinned down a specific date and my shipment cleared customs, the movers in Thailand were on time and well staffed with a large crew for the move. English language skills was again a problem, which resulted in a lot of boxes left in the wrong parts of the house and subsequent work on my part, but the crew was friendly and worked hard. It seems pretty clear that the damage to my things was part of the packing and loading process, not the unloading process, but the overall effect was damage to items I couldn't have expected. Metal floor lamps and the metal base of a vintage wood reliquary bent so badly as to now sit crooked, deep cracks in a vintage butcher block and lengthwise through the front panels of a solid wood bedroom dresser and along back seams of a hardwood nightstand, broken pottery, dozens and dozens of badly bent books in boxes that were underpacked and collapsed in shipment, heavy items packed inside large lampshades- bending them irreparably, and framed art that came apart at the corners from sideways torque. I did report this damage to the representative in Thailand, to which I received no response. It is clear that the company policy is one of helpfulness until something goes wrong and then it's all on you to handle it. I will note that after spending literally hours and hours preparing the itemized inventory and preparing the replacement quotes required of each for the platinum coverage, I declined insurance with the company due to the insane restrictions on how any claim would be handled. Read the fine print before choosing this option, as my coverage, which would have been limited to coverage of named items (which is another limitation of the insurance offered) was going to cost more than 4k, not including the insurance fee they charge against the cost of the shipment itself, and would have allowed the company to seek local repair of anything damaged rather replacement. Knowing that this policy would never pay to replace, for example, the $6k custom leather sofa I shipped over (plus thousands to ship it to Thailand), I opted to risk damage less than the $4k+ rather than pay it to them and end up with shoddy repairs anyway. read more

When I learned that I would be relocating from the San Francisco Bay Area to Maui, HI, among the many different items that I would need to coordinate (and perhaps one of the hardest) would be the move of our household goods from a 3000 square foot/four bedroom home. I found Rainier Overseas Movers quite by accident, as I was researching sites designed to help with overseas relocations where shipping via container ships was going to be required. I collected four different bids, and Rainier's was by far the most favorable (nearly 50% less than others I investigated). From the moment I met the origination agent who would move our goods from our home in California to storage and pack them for transport on the cargo ship, I knew I was making an excellent choice. Highly professional, attuned to my concerns and needs, and very clear in setting expectations, the entire process proceeded exactly according to plan. Every deadline, timeline, and promise for delivery was made and in many cases exceeded. And most importantly, there were no surprises when the bill arrived. It cost exactly what was quoted, and not one penny more. The communication from Doug Wiviott at Rainier was always rapid, timely and very professional, exceeding my expectations every time. At times, Doug responded before I could even step away from my computer after sending him an email! One of the most difficult aspects of our move to Maui was effortless, affordable and exceptionally well done. And while I hope that I never need to move back to the Mainland from our new home in Maui, I would only work with Rainier if that was ever needed again. I wouldn't trust my precious possessions with anyone else. I have recommended Rainier to two other colleagues who are moving to/from Hawaii, and I would keep recommending them over and over. Doug and his team at Rainier made a 2000+ mile move across an ocean as effortless as if I were moving down the street. I have used Rainier for my 5th international move form Paris to California USA. Initially I felt good about their sales pitch, even though they were priced the highest among the different removing companies we consulted. In my experience of international moves, dealing with Rainier was the worse: 1. A large amount of our personal items were broken in the process (we are talking1,000's of $$) 2. Rainier tried to charge us for being late pretending that I would have to pay storage fees because their ship left later than expected. 3. They delivered late to our home, making me and the unpacking crew stranded at my house for a whole day 4. When asking about appointment to have the empty boxes removed, they told me that they do not provide that service even though the sales guy said the opposite. Basically, Rainier will take any opportunity to discredit their responsibility in anything, and even tried to squeeze $$ out of us for their ship being late in departing! Everything you read here is factual and the absolute truth. In January 2017, I set up a container shipment from Texas to Thailand. I paid the local company the total cost of the shipment ($7692.96) from packing loading, shipping, delivery in Thailand, and unpacking. I assumed they in turn paid Rainier who paid the shipping company and the destination mover. On February 16, in Thailand, I received an email which reads: "Your shipment was inspected by US Export customs in Los Angeles. There is a total of $1,460.00 due for this. This must be paid before delivery of your shipment can be made." and "We have also advised Boonma to deliver after we have notified them of payment." (It was written as if I had no intention of paying). I was never warned about a possibility of an inspection at any time. The container was effectively being held for a ransom. The only way I could pay from Thailand, is send my credit card information to Rainier. When the container was delivered at the dock in Thailand, I developed two medical issues and needed to return to the US. So I also decided to have the container returned to the US since I could not stay to receive it. Rainier told me it would cost $8,570.51. I was surprised again that it cost MORE to ship it to the US especially when it was NOT delivered to the house in Thailand and NOT unpacked. I asked for a breakdown of the costs of $7691 & $8570; in other words cost of packing, shipping, delivery and unpacking, but NEVER received it. I AM STILL WAITING FOR A REFUND FOR NOT DELIVERING AND UNPACKING THE CONTAINER IN THAILAND. I believe legal action is now necessary to recover the cost of delivery and unpacking in Thailand. I was very uncomfortable doing business with Rainier because I felt the administrator was unreliable, poor communications and because of the surprises. Everything you have read above is factual and the absolute truth. I initially filed a review but the response was demeaning and slanderous. Even including others to support the respondents' insults. I had a FABULOUS experience from start to finish. The first person I interacted with was Dave Wiviott at Ranier, who was very responsive to my questions and always answered me immediately. Dave scheduled his local guys in Los Angeles to pack me up -- which they did with great professionalism. Nothing was broken in my move to India. Upon arrival in India -- my container was professionally unpacked, passed thru Customs with minimal hassle (handled by PM Relocations - a Mumbai company that partnered with Rainier) and delivered to my rural address 80 kilometers north of Mumbai. do-not-use-this-company I was moving from Pennsylvania to Germany and despite many phone calls and emails my moving goods are now sitting in the UK for more than one month after a transfer time of 93 days. In addition, I was told at the time of shipping that the weight limit was not strict and I would not exceed anyway. In the end I was charged 1000 USD more than I was originally quoted. The sales person Peter Helgeson is not even bothering to answer my emails any longer. Avoid this company at all cost, they are not sincere business people. read more

I used Rainier to move from Fort Collins, CO to Kristiansand, Norway. Rainier was great to work with and they used a local moving company that came to my home to make sure the household items would all fit in the container. When the container was delivered in Norway, a local Norwegian company unloaded the container. None of the items were damaged and there were no delays or problems along the way. Rainier explained the moving process well and delivered great service in every way. read more

Mark Lawson and his band of liars will feed you a bunch of lies after they pick up your shipment. Your shipment will be delayed in Italy. Your shipment will be delayed in customs. Your shipment will require additional assembly costs not in your final invoice. God help you to get your items after you ship with these liars because he 'does not have any control over what the local movers do.' I quote him. read more

As an overall, our experience was really really good. It was the first time we moved internationally and thanks to the 3 actors (movers Houston, TX, movers London, UK and Rainieros) everything went really smooth. Also, one note on this last thing, if one of the pieces was not working well, the overall experience could be bad for us, but in our case, all of them worked perfectly fine. As a starting point, Matt B was really helpful in terms of process management, he was always responsive every time I had a doubt/question and really helpful and collaborative. 5 stars On Houston side, we felt like movers' sales rep had a very straightforward approach when coming onsite and his estimate seemed reasonable and his feedback during the on-site estimate gave us a good idea. Movers were really professional and if our stuff has been delivered with no chips/scratches or anything broken is because things were packed really well. I would give 4 stars and will explain the reason. In the end, when you move, your feedback is driven by the quality of your stuff at delivery, but I wanted to highlight something on the move-out day. Our expectation was that everything was going to be done in 4-6 hours but everything took longer. We had a flight to catch that we could miss. The crew was based on 3 people, the crew manager was really professional and packed everything very well, and she basically handed half of our apartment by herself, the other 2 were not that fast compared to her, but if they were as prepared as she was, maybe everything could be faster. Sometimes they spoke spanish among them which can be felt rude because you never know what they are talking about and I personally was wondering if they were saying something bad or good. A last thing is that we didn't know that there were additional items that we couldn't move to the UK (like batteries, sprays or candle) and would've preferred to know it upfront. They also mentioned food (like we had come coffee packs we actually asked the movers' sales rep during the walkthru and he said for small quantity it couldn't be a problem) but given the feedback we got they let us bring that otherwise they would take it off too. Not a complaint, again, we are happy with the way our stuff was delivered (and nothing missing, which sometimes is worth a mention too), but maybe it's also worth to speak up about things we didn't like and increased our frustration/stress on the move-out day. After move-out, Matt B and the UK movers were really helpful on giving me guidance and also updating me on the status of my container. Next, movers UK side. In terms of process management, have nothing to say but happiness, The agent was really professional, available and responsive and everything went really smooth here too. In terms of crew, they were also professional and really nice. They recognized everything was handled really in a professional way in Houston and were able to bring us everything set in a few hours. 5 stars for them Now last thing. The price. We didn't have a lot of estimates to compare, just two, and Rainieros was the cheapest offer. It was our first international relocation so couldn't have a better comparison rather than these 2 and perhaps what we accepted was also more expensive than a third estimate if I had it, but given the quality of the work I must admit what we received an extremely good work related to the amount we paid. Let me also add that receiving emails asking for feedback is another thing you don't expect (my feedback could have been bad too) and it let me feel I'm respected not only as a payer but also as a customer. To be honest, I'm trying to think of something negative but the truth is that everything went like clockwork and we couldn't ask for more. The local packers and loaders in North Carolina were amazing, hard-working, very diligent and although we weren't convinced everything was going to fit into the 20ft container, they did manage it... just! The delivery from Norfolk, VA to Limassol, Cyprus was exactly as scheduled (I didn't realise there are now many apps which will track ships progress and locations which is useful). The delivery/unloading agents here were also excellent and although we still have a few boxes to go, everything is in great condition due in no small part to the diligence of the packers. Communication throughout with Doug and Rick at Ranier as well as the contacts either end was quick and easy. Although not the cheapest, they also weren't the most expensive so all in all, it was a five star experience. read more

Worst moving company ever....unfortunately we completed our move from California to France. It was a nightmare from the beginning to the end ! Our furniture was even not packed ...We finished the job with my wife and the supervisor to load the container!! They even had no lights for working outside, they just worked in the darkness. They broke many items. All these people who gave 5 stars are just fake people who never moved, it is just the company who logged on the website with different login fake name....Never use this company for moving!! read more

Hi folks, a quick (maybe) review on my overseas movement of our household goods from Minot, ND to Leyte, Philippine. I spent allot of hours on the Internet looking a reviews and just general "what to do" type articles. I started the process in the Philippines while we were building our house. Those three companies I asked for quotes never got back to me. So when I got back to ND, those three didn't get a second chance. This time I chose Rainier Overseas Movers Inc, United Van Lines, and Mayflower. Rainier (David Wiviott) got back to me in less than 24 hours, United in 48 hours, and Mayflower never emailed me back but wanted to talk on the phone (which I almost never carry on me unless I'm outside the house). Rainier had their contact in Minot come out and did a site survey and sent the results back to Rainier and I got my quote back before United's representatives showed up for their survey. It took another week for United to come back with their quote which included a lot of add-on charges to be determined later. Rainier's quote was all inclusive with the normal exception of customs inspections at overseas port and any customs duties and taxes that had to be paid. I chose Rainier. The day before the actual loading day, the local movers arrived and pre-arraigned several boxes (I had already packed about 90% of my stuff.) On loading day, these guys were great. Loaded a 20ft ocean container in 4 hours. Of most important to us was a very large grandfather clock. They packed and loaded it so well that it survived the journey unscathed. In the Philippines, Rainier's agent had already gotten a hold of us, determined our entry status (duty/tax exempt), told us what they would need to get the clearance and kept us informed of the date of arrival. Basically, once I chose Rainier, all I had to worry about was personal travel. Their exceptional contact agents worked their magic and my stuff was delivered undamaged. I was particularly worried about customs in the Philippines, but Rainier's agent (Goetz Moving) handled the entire customs maze. If you're moving overseas I would not give Rainier a second thought, I would use them again in a heartbeat. And oh BTW: as a retired military, I've moved overseas 5 times.
