I think it's impossible to not be a little nervous dropping off such important and irreplaceable items with a stanger, but I couldn't have been happier with the final product. I had 7 30-minute tapes and they were able to turn it around in one day and also in Apple ProRes format so it would be easier to edit. I highly recommend Rainbow! While digging through some of my belongings the other day I came across eight mini 8mm VHS tapes from way back when (like '98 to 2000). Remember the little VHS's made for the handi-cams... after recording you either had to plug the handi-cam into the television to watch your home made video or you placed the min-VHS into a big-VHS that went into the VCR... remember? If you don't remember it's probably cause your like 15 years old and have no clue what a VHS or VCR is anyway. I guess you can just Google what i'm talking about or just skip to a food review. With no clue as to what were on the tapes and no equipment to watch 'em on my own I dropped off the video relics at Rainbow and picked them up a week later. I'm not sure what a reasonable price for this service is but I was comfortable paying the $20 to convert each tape to DVD. The picture, sound and clarity was good and played with ease on my Xbox. I think it's a great service if you or your parents have a stock pile of VHS home movies that you haven't watched in a while. Definitely dug up some forgotten memories. I spoke with an employee on the phone, and he was nearly clueless. They couldn't understand that I didn't have a DVD player, so I couldn't receive the file on a DVD. Finally after repeatedly explaining myself, they told me it would be $125 for a two hour tape or $75 for 30 minutes, because "it's really hard to do that," which seemed odd, since that's their business model. Most other people said it cost them $20 on Yelp. When I brought this up, they guy on the phone told me I should go there instead...da fuck? For the record, I did not actually use their services, which is why I'm not giving them one star. read more

Professionally transferring archaic tapes does not come cheap. After a few calls around the NYC area, I found Rainbow Video to have the best offer. For 9 8mm video cassette tapes I waited 6 days (including the weekend) for them to be transferred to USB. I got to see my forgotten memories well over a decade later. Although, it seems that the employee(s) pressed record AFTER starting the tapes rather than the other way around. I lost a few seconds at the beginning for each tape. Whether you have a tape with 2 hours of material or 5 minutes, it'll cost you the same. I'm being generous with my Stars for being the cheapest in the area and their friendliness. read more

I recently went to Rainbow Video to have a 20-year-old PAL-format VHS tape transferred to DVD, for both preservation and for viewing. I was very impressed by their turnaround time: dropped the tape off on my lunch break and was able to pick up the DVD after work! Although the price was a tiny bit high for me, I understand that the PAL to NTSC format transfer was probably the reason for the cost. Customer service was excellent and everyone I encountered was friendly, informative, and helpful. Dropped of my NKOTB VHS promotional video of their new album, at that time in 1994, Step By Step. I originally had obtained a video when the Kids had went on a cruise ship that I was working on, Premier Cruise Lines, The Oceanic. Port out of Cape Canaveral, FL. Little Joey was gambling in the casino in his Zoot suits at age 14, Jordan eating breakfast by himself, not being bothered at all by the little fans & leaving the table then the little girls attacked his dishes, silverware and left over food. Didn't see Danny, Donnie or John, hardly. I watched the tape and many other VHS I had over and over again. Gets boring on a cruise ship when one works on one. But of course since then I had lost that VHS tape, or had thrown it away, and rebought it on eBay for five bucks. Currently took it to Ron at Rainbow Video Store to get it converted into a DVD so I can watch it all over again. What had inspired me to do that was watching the Wahlburgers series. I had an old Panasonic DVR with all of my family videos from over 25 years ago. I called Rainbow Video and spoke to Ron. He suggested I bring the DVR in he would see if it was possible to get the contents copied from the Hard Drive to Disk (I called many other places and they said they couldn't do it). Ron gave me a quote and said he would call me the next day. The next morning I got a phone call from Ron - he already copied the content onto disks. I thought there were nine hours of video, he let me know there were only seven hours and only charged me for seven hours. I recently went to Rainbow Video to have then create a dvd video slideshow with pictures and music and I was SHOCKED at how much it cost. They never called me in advance to let me know how much it was going to ultimately be so I was unable to do any editing before they committed the project to dvd. It was over $900.00. If you use this company, please get a quote in advance and also get then to let you edit the project before you commit to it. I was so so disappointed with their service.
