I used to live in the area, and we still visit Rainbow when we're in the neighborhood. Rainbow is a fairly large, well-stocked hardware store also selling a good variety of household items. The majority of employees are unfriendly and act like they don't want to be there. If you can ignore this, the store pretty much has everything you need for the home. I believe prices are above average, but this is Manhattan. 2 stars for customer service, 4 stars for inventory. I'll give Rainbow an overall score of 3 1/2 stars. read more

Before we moved into Manhattan on the upper east side, a good friend assured us that there was a wonderful hardware store that carried everything we'd ever need for our apartment. I thought that sounded ridiculous but shortly after we moved into Manhattan, we visited the Rainbow store on First Avenue between 75th and 76th Streets and I realized our friend was absolutely right. Over the last few years we've purchased essentials for our kitchen, everything from measuring cups to excellent baking pans! We've purchased our very study laundry/ shopping cart, pictures frames, an inflatable mattresse, probably dozens of cosmetics, soaps, shampoos as well as toys, art supplies and of course, stuff you need from a hardware store! We live about ten blocks away but we know that it's the place to go when we need something for the apartment. They slso have cool docks, hats and an excellent selection of chocolates! I slmost forgot to mention that they also have a " membership program ". For every purchase you make ,you get points based on what you buy as well as monthly discounts. As a result, I'll often get $5 to $10 dollars off when i go to pay at the cash register. I have slso been very impressed with their dedicated staff who seem to know where every product is on their two floors of merchandise! read more

I purchased 3 packages of identical curtains and a curtain hanger here for a total of $45.68. No problem. Seems normal. After arriving home that day, I realized it would be worth having one more curtain from the same set. So, I returned and bought the same exact curtain package but was charged $28.30 (even though three of the identical packages and a curtain hanger only cost $45.68). Disgusted at being ripped off and I wish I kept the receipt. I only have my bank statements. If you shop here, beware of the charges. I recommend keeping the receipt so that you have evidence of either fraud or utter incompetence in operating the cash register. read more

Never again. As a lifelong resident of the area, our family has shopped here on a regular basis for decades. While it's become less and less pleasant over the years, we've forgiven the lack of customer service and the treasure hunt of finding items. ("It's in the back is the response for any item you ask for." Try it.) But the manner in which items are priced is completely unacceptable. More like outrageous. The lack of consistency and lack of accountability. Budgets are quite tight these days, but it's also about the principle. Glad to pay a fair price but when one day the item is one cost and the next minute another, no. Less than a year ago I purchased a tea kettle for $13.99. It broke because it was dropped. I came back to purchase it again. I was surprised Rajnbow now asked $19.99. Since Amazon was charging the same, better to support a local business, right? When I paid for it at the register, the cashier charged me $23.99 even though the sticker on the kettle displayed $19.99. When I pointed out the error, he still did not believe me. Then I had to get on line again because he attended someone else while I checked the price. Then he told me to get on line with another cashier for a refund. That's three times to wait on line to correct their error. Then the cashier who gave me the credit made sure to call another staff member to immediately change the price on all the kettles. With a sense of urgency as if the building was about to fall. Then when I mentioned how the same item was $13.99 less than a year ago, she lectured me on how prices have gone up. And would not stop. It was quite the sNo, this wasn't inflation or tariffs. This is simply price gouging, and random at best. Next time, guess what. I'll use Amazon and go to Home Depot. For real. read more

dude i love this place. every CVS/Duane Reade in the area is understaffed and has everything locked up so you're waiting forever in a back rooms-esque hellscape but not here. they have genuinely everything you need and the workers are helpful! i come here for everything. it's expensive like things are probably marked up but that's the city for you and it's not like you're getting good deals at the big stores unless you're couponing. and ur feels better than amazon read more

Everytime I go in here I'm always reminded why I don't come more frequently. I came in here to make a copy of keys. The person at the key station said she could make the copies and I went to remove the key from my keychain. The person at station said you don't need to remove the key. She was on the phone the whole time and not paying attn. and accidentally bent my other keys. Save your sanity and go to the smaller harder store across the street. read more

My husband Purchased a $20 umbrella today. It broke within minutes in 2 places ..I went to change it, store manager at the cash register insisted that it wasn't the umbrella my husband bought. He emailed me the receipt which I showed. She was incredible rude, wouldn't change it and proceeded to yell at me. I will never again set my foot in that store again. Wow - talk about variety and inventory! Just moved to the area and searched hardware store on Yelp for an industrial deck broom and found it here. This place has it all and more. It's like hardware store meets a local Bed Bath & Beyond. Excellent options and pricing is mediocre to high (expected for the area). Staff isn't that friendly and no one will go out of their way to ask if you need help which I'm disappointed in. However - all staff had masks on which I loved to see. read more

Went to this store today bought a mug and they wrapped it bubble wrap plastic, I kindly asked for an extra piece of plastic to wrap another coffee mug I had, even offered to pay for it and they said they couldn't give me another and that I would need to talk to the manager. Disaster. I went to this store to get 2 simple window shades cut to size. I'd had this done here years ago, all was good then. Wellllll, not this time. The very good guy in that area is overwhelmed by people needing info, directions on where something is, etc. His area for cutting window shades is now BURIED behind hanging products. So he has to try and work by sliding them back and forth so he can SEE. IMPOSSIBLE to operate. He also doesn't have the right kind of tape measurer -- he has a very stiff metal one which doesn't have the flexibility to measure accurately. The customers are damned rude. The other staff are not great either. Nothing could ever convince me to return, not even FREE products. read more

I shop here a lot because I am trying to support local businesses, NOT Amazon. But the other day I encountered the rudest checkout woman, Jennifer. I bought a plant that had drainage holes but nothing underneath to catch the dirt coming out of the holes. I had a shopping bag but did not want to put the plant in it without something to prevent the dirt coming out onto my groceries. I asked for a small piece of plastic or bag to put under the holes. Jennifer informed me I had to pay another 5 cents. I pointed out I did not need a shopping bag just something protective. She kept repeating five cents, five cents, five cents. After being a customer for 22 years while I watched people fill their pockets with merchandise and not pay for it, while I was trying to pay for my hundred dollar sale the cashier told me I was stealing and I'm not leaving without paying even though their credit card terminal said pull your card is done I can't believe with all the stealing I saw going on in there they would make a big deal for someone who was actually paying. Ace Hardware stores generally a bunch of stuff to shop from. This store is pretty large taking up most of the block. Besides your normal hardware stuff, it also has a bunch of other things. I was in here with a kid so we went for the toy section which isn't too shabby. They have toys as well as some board games and other games for kids. As for the hardware stuff, if you need something the employees are knowledgeable and can get you in the right direction. Definitely be back when I am in the area again. read more

I live a block away from this place and usually go there because they do have most of the things that I ever will need. During the current epidemic I have been working 24 hour shifts sometimes four times a week at a nearby hospital. I have been pleased to see that most retail stores are allowing for healthcare providers, and Frontline workersTo skip the line at the door given that we truly often times do not have time between shifts or after working for 24 hours to spend a significant portion of our rest time in line. This morning I stopped by after 30 hours of working in the COVID ICU to exchange a soda stream CO2 tank. The line was approximately 25 minutes long and I politely asked the man at the door if I could just go in to exchange my tank (which takes no more than two minutes). Not Letting me skip the line is one thing, and I understand if that is the policy. However the rude and condescending response was unwarranted, and the snickering when I politely mentioned that I was on call last night and don't have too much time between shifts is disrespectful and offensive. I love this place! I always find what I need and a few things I just have to have. You can find one of a kind items for cute decor. Handy gadgets are everywhere. You can find everything you need to set up your first apartment, or your dorm room! The place is huge. Go downstairs and be surprised at how much you can find. ACE hardware has very knowledgable employees. They always show me exactly where the items are that I need for projects. You can also find gift ideas and greeting cards at Rainbow. It's too bad the subway created a nightmare on the upper East Side. I liked the store up there better. No problem. I always return to Rainbow. No coupons needed here. The prices are reasonable. Returns are accepted in 15 days with your receipt. I've never needed to return anything. Standard Stock items turn over rather quickly. I couldn't find the price on something and one of the employees said she'd get it for me. She was nice about it. I have been a customer of Ace Hardware branches since I was growing up in New Jersey. Our local Ace Hardware knew my father by name. I have recently moved from 80th and York to E 79th and First, even closer to Rainbow Ace Hardware. This store is my only hardware choice in New York. It has absolutely everything one could need, from appliances, to useful household items. I went yesterday to get a replacement glass carafe for my 20 year old Mr. Coffee. I left with an entire shopping bag completely full, as I got extra soap dishes, a holder for the sponges in my sink, magnets for the grocery list on my refrigerator, and a new shower curtain for my prewar bathroom, with black and white Parisian motifs. Just what I had envisioned for the period second bath, complete with the black and white original floor tiles. I heartily recommend Rainbow Ace Hardware, and I would never dream of going anywhere else. The prior Ace Hardware locations that I have visited include Hillside, NJ, and Kennebunk, Maine. There is 2 floors jam packed with floor to ceiling with stuff. This is not your high-end, great quality items. Just dependable home decor and supplies store. I live right down the block and have been going here for years. I never write a review on them because honestly it's the closest thing to an all stop hardware place that I have with decent prices. With the virus I have been going here plenty as it's one of the only places open. The ladies who work the cash register are so rude and racist. At first I thought it was just a one off but I could not resist putting it out there today. They make you feel like an idiot and basically like everything is the customers fault. Today I was blamed for not reading a sign for non-returnable item. I'm sorry, but how is this my responsibility and why should I be made to feel uncomfortable my entire check out. Kind of sucked that we tromped all over manhattan looking for a grill for the July 4th weekend, but at last upon our return to the neighborhood we stopped here for one last shot. The bonus was they do have a big selection, but nothing is worth dealing with these folks. This place has EVERYTHING you could ever need in terms of housewares and decorative items - it's like a smaller Bed Bath & Beyond. But I am not kidding when I say that there are few things that fall under those categories that you can't find there. They have every color of bath mat, shape of soap dispenser and size of picture frame you could ever need. I will say that it is super tight and cluttered in there - it's best to just ask for help if you don't know exactly where you're going already and I wouldn't say it's wheelchair friendly, even on the first floor (downstairs has even MORE stuff!). There is no such thing as an aisle at Rainbow...it's more like a maze. Sometimes things are a little more expensive than they would be at somewhere like BB&B, BUT they are always willing to call and order stuff for you if they're out of stock. And I guess the good part about it being so jam packed with stuff is that it's because as I've said a million times, they really do have everything! They also have great stuff for crafting and painting and they custom mix paints! The store is very congested with tight aisles packed with items but has a very diverse inventory of hardware, paint, housewares, crafts, etc. I able to find everything I needed but not without a helpful associate leading the way. read more

Rainbow is a great place to peruse; they sell a little bit of everything, from protein bars to doorbells. The prices for certain items are more expensive than you'd find elsewhere, so I wouldn't make this my go-to for things like cookware or home furnishings, but it's a great place to come to when your ceiling light zaps out on a Sunday night like mine did. Plus, as I've come to experience, their customer service is outstanding! I came here in search of a weird halogen bulb, which Rainbow had a small selection of. The staff here are pretty knowledgeable; one of them explained to me the difference between the bulbs, what might work given my needs, etc. They were all pretty expensive at $10+ for one bulb, but the prices at the hardware store across the street were about the same, if not slightly more expensive. After bringing the bulb home and installing it, I found it was wayyyyyyyyyy too dim. I brought the bulb back to Rainbow, and they allowed me to exchange it, no questions asked!! In fact, when I couldn't decide on the right bulb the second time around, the cashier told me that if the new one is still too dim or too bright, I could bring it back again and exchange it! I was so impressed! Sure enough, my second bulb was still too dim. Three trips to Rainbow later, I have light! Thank you, Rainbow! read more
