I went to the store yesterday because I was having so much trouble with plantar fasciitis. Jessie helped me for almost an hour. He patiently picked out shoes that are known to support the foot and protect one from developing PF. He watched me walk with each pain of shoes. Visiting UVA, I decided to stop into the Ragged Mountain Running Shop. I was immediately, warmly greeted by Nathaniel. I suffer from occasional plantar fasciitis, and flat soles, among other things. Nathaniel watched me walk back and forth several times. He then selected several brands of walking/running shoes. He watched me walk in each shoe. He wasn't satisfied that he solved my pronating issue so he pulled out another brand. Once I selected my brand, he pulled out all the colors that I could select in that shoe. He took so much time with me. He was very patient. As I looked around, I noticed that the other sales people also seemed to take great care of their customers. I ended up buying a brand I had never tried and I love them. I highly recommend this store. read more

We visited Ragged Mountain from Louisiana while on a visit to family in Charlottesville. My husband purchased a pair of shoes and we went on our way. Fast forward three months, and his shoes now squeak when he walks. Checked manufacturer's website and needed a receipt for a warranty claim, so I contacted Alec by email. Although the store doesn't log out of town customers, he was still willing to help us by searching his sales records. While he couldn't produce a replacement receipt, he went ABOVE AND BEYOND to honor the manufacturer's warranty and is replacing the shoes. You're getting what amounts to a custom fit. Not by one salesperson who is knowledgeable but by two, the second being the manager/owner. I just left the store. The young salesperson who helped me noticed that my New Balance shoes seemed to large. I explained that was my fault, I asked Alec to order the size that I had on for me. It was the same size as my previous pair of NB shoes. The young woman suggested that I try on a size smaller to see how they fit. The pair that she had me try was a better fit. She said we will exchange them for them for the correct size. I said that I had worn the ones that did not fit. Ragged Mountain Running Shop was more interested in doing what was right for the customer. Hopefully NB will take the "slightly" worn shoes back . Ragged Mountain Running Shop for the win! They fit me, a new runner, with my first pair of running shoes about 8 years ago and solved my plantar fasciitis and achilles tendinitis issues that I had for YEARS. 5 years ago I moved back to Virginia Beach and I would still swing by to pick up my shoes when I was visiting family. However last summer I made a terrible mistake and went to a local (to me) fancy feet store who recommended a different shoe. Since then I have developed plantar fasciitis again. Lesson learned. I contacted Ragged Mountain two days ago to see if they could recommend a new shoe based off my purchase history. Alec, who was incredible and quick to respond to my emails, made a couple recommendations and suggested I try their virtual fitting which confirmed everything he suspected. The moment I entered the store and made eye contact with a sales associate the gentlemen came over, smiled, and was ready to help. I was in the market for a new pair of running shoes but had no idea where to start. The sales associate was friendly and offered to evaluate my walk and run to help me find the best fit for my feet. Since he was still relatively new another seasoned sales associate came by and offered advice during the evaluation. The whole evaluation took about 20 minutes; the trying and buying portion capped my time off at about an hour. Both associates were patient and offered helpful advice throughout. They offered different types of shoes based on slight increases in support and explained the differences. I really appreciated the excellent customer service and ended up purchasing a pair from a brand I hadn't considered in the past due to the great support the shoes offered. If you're a runner or walking enthusiast I would definitely recommend stopping by RMRS for it's great customer care and the willingness in which they want to help. The ability to try on shoes with a person who watches you walk on around in them is nice. It's an old concept and it's alive and well at Ragged Mountain. They set you up with a chair, check your size, and bring you shoes they think you might like. I thought I found a pair, and was a first time purchaser with these guys. I liked my overall initial experience however the shoes, which were quality, didn't like my feet. I tried on several pairs on the initial fitting, and am concerned because instead of a return, I was given store credit. I feel now that I'm trapped into buying shoes that I won't love because I can't shop the market. So I'll be back to their location to try on more shoes but I do find their no returns policy a little upsetting. read more

I went here looking to get advice on what running shoes to get since I have serious shin splints. I didn't plan on buying the shoes but the staff was so amazing and helpful that I did! They watched me run and walk barefoot then in 5 different pairs to make sure they fit and worked well. They even gave me a free booklet of places to run and races I can participate in. Toon away a star because they only had a few brands and colors in certain styles. They didn't have under armor . Also their workout clothes wee super expensive and not a wide selection. I had a fantastic experience yesterday getting a new set of running shoes. Although Ragged Mountain can be a little pain getting to it since it's off the corner it's worth it. Plus it's got free parking behind the store. Upon entering the store I was immediately greeted and assisted by the lovely Gabriella. She impressed me by promptly sizing up my shoe and identifying brand and year. From there we tried on different shoe sizes for the brand of my choice (Brooks). She watched me run with each pair and confirmed shoe was good for my particular gait. After picking my shoe a supervisor came over and double checked. All of this personalized treatment is free and not racked on to the price of the shoes. They have lots of other runners gear to look such as socks and gloves. Nice! Stopped in last night (well, more like rushed over 5PM quitting time at my job across town) to use a Groupon I purchased for $30 worth of running gear! Had meant to stop in many a time in the past, but for some reason or another, never got around to it. The shop itself is nice - larger than you'd imagine from the outside, that's for sure! Staff was friendly without being overbearing, and were being helpful to all the customers that needed assistance with shoe fittings and what not. Since I started running cross country in high school, I've been coming to this family-run shop for shoes. Their highly trained staff work hard to make sure you're in the pair of shoes that's best for you. They analyze the way you walk and jog in each pair of shoes and won't let you out the door until they're fairly certain they've found the shoe that will most likely prevent short- or long-term injury. In addition, the owners have long been champions of the city's running and jogging community and can offer insight on the best places to pound the pavement. They keep the atmosphere unintimidating and are well suited for novice and expert runners alike. Shoe prices tend to run a bit higher than your run-of-the-mill sporting goods store but consider it money well invested. 4/26/13 Second purchase from these guys in less than twelve months. First, last Sept. for a pair on Nike runners. The staff evaluated my gate walking and running and took into consideration my pronation and tendancy to experience shin splints etc. and reccomended what proved to be an excellet pair of shoes I would have otherwise never considered. Today: Walked into the shop w/ a friend who was making an exchange when I discovered that they also carried a full line of Birkenstock sandals (I was planning on driving all the way down to Short Pump to Saxon Shoes ( another fine buisness BTW) this weekend to try on sizes and various models. I got my first pair of running shoes that actually fit me correctly here, and for that I am forever grateful. I ran my first half marathon in those babies. I headed here on a busy Saturday looking for better running shoes, and even though the place was a little too packed for my liking, there were definitely enough helpful employees on hand to evaluate my running style. At one point, I had three people helping me, and they asked a manager to come by and check out my final selection just to make sure I was making the most perfect choice possible. These people really care about runners. The reason it gets a four out of five is just the space. On a crowded day made it hard to have space to walk/ run so that my running could be evaluated. Bottom line: Best shoe buying experience I've ever had for my very hard to fit feet. Brief story: Came here for a 'gait analysis' after my big toes poked through on both shoes of two pairs of running shoes, and I experienced pain in my right heel. At Ragged Mountain, I received patient, competent, fully attentive interest in my issue from the helpful sales associate and then the shop's owner. They watched me -- numerous times -- walk in and out of shoes (I am an avid walker not a runner) to determine what was going on with my feet. They dutifully sought more than a half-dozen different pairs of shoes, checking carefully for fit with each, watching me stand, walk, and assessing my comfort with each variation. They explained throughout why each pair was or was not a close fit. I learned that I have much narrower feet than I ever knew, that my feet are nearly a full size different from one another, and that my clearly flat arches make me subject to pronation, particularly on my right foot. Wearing shoes that were too large, had me clenching my toes inside the toe box. That stressed my heel, causing pain. Here was the kicker for me in the service experience: When we found a pair that looked like a great fit, I mentioned that I felt some minor pressure points in the shoe that might be distracting. The helpful folks at Ragged Mountain immediately committed to keep at it for the perfect fit for me. They did. And we found a great fitting pair that I am deliriously happy with. The topper: They then they offered me a ten percent discount if i donated my old ill-fitting shoes to a project in Africa. Done! So, I got an outstanding, personalized evaluation to help resolve a life-long challenge with fitting my odd feet (I am 60 years old), a great pair of shoes (by Brooks), and a discount from what I would have paid anywhere else for these exact shoes. This was my first experience at Ragged Mountain Running. I had a great in-store experience and they suggested that I replace my 4 year old Nikes with a New Balance model that was similar. I ran for a few weeks on the shoes and then suffered an unrelated injury. I used them on and off for a few more weeks then used them in a cross training class and almost broke my face when the sole of the shoe came loose mid-burpee. I called the store to ask what could be done since I had never had a pair of shoes last only a few months to be told just to super glue the sole. I was told since they weren't "cross trainers" that was probably the reason they failed even though my nikes has never had such an issue. I asked if new balance would take them back to which I was told I had purchased last year's model so probably not. Wish I hadn't paid full price three months ago for a year old model that wasn't going to be replaced. read more

Let me say, first of all, that I love how Ragged Mountain helps the community. They put on great races, and they do a lot of help out the university whenever they can. I think they're an important part of the community, but from now on I will be taking my business to a different running store. I feel like the kids they employ are always trying hard, but you're always competing with whichever of their friends walk in the door. I've gotten really inconsistent advice, and it's been pretty frustrating. Thankfully, they do have a very generous return policy, which I have used many times. In general, I like this shop.
