Whoever invented the word "Hole-In-The-Wall', they must've thought about a place just like this: Ragam is the quintessential "HITHW"! My Indian friend - who grew up in Mumbai - invited me to join him for dinner at this place. He himself had discovered it almost 10 years ago, when he first moved to London and when we sat down at the table he said: it hasn't changed a bit. Still looks the same! So, here's what we ordered: * Rasa Vada (Starter - Savory doughnut immersed in a spicy south Indian soup) * Chemmeen Poriyal (Prawn Curry) * Kozhi Varutha Curry (Chicken Curry) * Cabbage Thoran (cabbage spiced with mustard seeds) * Kerala Paratha (typical South-Indian bread) * Sweet coconut Paratha (bread filled with conconut) * We also tried to order the Beef Olarthiyathu, but unfortunately they were out of it; my friend was visibly disappointed I loved it all, especially the sweet coconut Paratha - heaven! My friend really loves this place. He said that during autumn they also do a traditional Onam celebration - Onam being the harvest festival celebrated by the Kerala people...so the South-Indian version of Thanksgiving? Another good find in Fitzrovia! Ragam might not be the hippest restaurant in the area, but what it lacks in razzle it more than makes up for in food. The space in smallish, but comfortable, though perhaps a little dim for two coworkers having lunch. We were greeted and seated promptly with waters brought out straight away. After leaping a few linguistic hurdles, we were pleased to hear about a £5 lunch special of a main course, rice, and a side. Good food can be cheap! I was a bit sickly, so opted for the Ragam soup (a mere £2) and some paratha bread. There were about five different selections of bread, and I decided upon the garlic. The wait for the food wasn't too long, and occasionally one of the cooks in the back would break into song. It was quaint. The soup was great: tasty, hardy, and with a bit (but not too much!) of kick. There's nothing worse than a puny soup, and this one definitely performs well. The garlic paratha had great intentions and would have been perfect if there were about 1/10 the garlic. When they say garlic, they mean "holy crap GARLIC." After the first piece I started cutting mine apart to knife out the excess garlic chunks. I fear I'll have a vague taste of garlic for at least a month. Without a doubt I'd come back here. Beyond knowing now to get the regular paratha, both my coworker and I were extremely pleased with our meals and ecstatic about the price. We shared some starters: chicken pakoda (dry bits of batter reminiscent of chicken, not a fan!), vegetable samosa (average), and a fried idly dish in a spicy sauce (delicious, and now I wish I remembered the menu name). Ragam really shines in the main courses though, so I'll forgive the appetizer mediocrity. I had the kappa and fish curry, which was a very rich onion-based sauce with big chunks of fish, with a big side of tapioca to soak up the juices. Get yourself some parathas to round out the meal. My first impression was positive when I saw their menu and noticed that they had several interesting Kerala dishes. However, I am sorry to say that it was all downhill from that point. I ordered the kozhi varutha curry with Kerala paratha while my wife ordered the kappa and fish curry. The chicken curry tasted good enough until I took a bite of the chicken itself and it tasted awful. The meat was tough and hard to bite into and it just felt that they were using some very substandard ingredients. Although the kappa and fish curry tasted alright, my wife had severe loose motion the next morning. All in all, I would strongly recommend that you avoid this restaurant. If you are looking for a Kerala food restaurant, I would recommend Rasa W1 just off bond street. read more

The service leaves a lot to be desired. Not a place I would take someone I am looking to impress - unless they are a foodie. There is a pretty impressive array of foods though I haven't tried out all - or inquired about the availabiolity of some of the rarer dishes. This used to be my favourite South Indian restaurant in London, it's only got about 20 covers. Unfortunately it was written up in The Sunday Times as one of Lindon's best kept secrets. Now the menu has a South Indian bent, but also standard Indian food, staff now have branded shirts too. No longer then gem it was. Food is still good and reasonably priced. I love Indian food, so it's always nice to find a place that doesn't just do your standard British curries, but is a bit more authentic and does south Indian foods as well. I came here for a leaving do for someone in the department, so we were a massive group, but they managed to make a decent booking for lunch on a Friday. We did take up over half the restaurant though because the place is incredibly tiny. I started with the Ragam soup, and it was really tasty. Not too filling, but it was a nice spicy broth and a great way to start the meal. Since it was lunch, I went for a prawn masala dosa (As I fell in love with Dosas in India, and it's not always easy to find this South Indian dish). Incredibly tasty. The chutneys it was served with were really delicious. We also ordered a bunch of sides to share, and my favorite was the chili doughnut things and the beets. South Indians really know how to do vegetarian food right as well. The chilli parathas were really tasty and full of chilli. They may have been too hot for some, but I was really enjoying the heat they packed. The service can be a bit slow (we were there for about 3 hours -- granted we were a large table, but that seems slightly excessive), so don't go expecting something quick. I'm glad I found this place, it's definitely good for something different, and while it's a bit of a hole-in-the-wall, it definitely has quite a bit of charm as well. read more

Went to Ragam for some late night take-away, and had ordered online beforehand. Apparently, the order had not gone through, but it only took a short wait to get my chicken masala dosai to go. And it was DEFINITELY worth the wait! Gently spicy and flavoursome and accompanied by a delicious sambar cocnut chutney - it was also definitely large enough to be a meal on its own, meaning that it is great value at £5.95. I will absolutely be back to sample more of the dishes, though perhaps also to take away, as the space isn't the most inviting. read more

Was wandering round post-pub looking for somewhere to eat and stumbled across this place, which neither of us had high hopes for. So I was pleasantly surprised to see a pretty authentic looking south Indian menu. There are a number of different dosai to choose from as starters, and both the ones we had were really tasty. My Kerala mutton curry was much nicer than my friend's chicken masala, and the green chilli paratha was also better than the plain. Indian beers come served in big bottles rather than on draft but are reasonably priced. The service is ok - they take your order and leave you alone - which is not a bad thing. read more

Good South Indian restaurant with great non-vegetarian options. Typical dishes from Kerala (although slightly Anglicized). Best things to try include the Fish Cakes, green mutton curry and any of the lamb or chicken curries. Also the Shrimp curries and Fish Malabar are great. The Kerala Paratha is pretty amazing too. This place is great. Tasty Southern Indian food with good Dosai. Not heavy at all, and good value for the money. The people working there are incredibly friendly. The place is usually packed on weekends and also pretty busy during the week for dinner. Best to make reservations. Frankly this place was a little disappointing. We had gone there for some Malayali food (food from Kerala), something thats absent from the menu of most Indian restaurants in Central London. But besides the food, there was nothing else to redeem this place. It was not easy to find this place ... rather out of the way ... and there were hardly any other businesses on this stretch of fitzrovia. I had called them for a booking at 7:30. They said they would hold the table from 7, because we would be asked to leave at 8:30. Now i appreciate that they would have other bookings ... but it doesn't sound sensible driving a prospective customer away on the phone itself even before he has come in. If there is a clash, just say no. The food was mixed. Avial (a veg dish from Kerala) was good ... and so was the Nadan fish curry. I felt jolly good having an Indian fish preparation after so so many months :) But the Uttapam was extremely disappointing. The service was uniformly below par. They didn't give us water until one of us asked at the end of the meal. When i ordered coke, they got the glass and a can ... it would have been nicer had they poured it out. On the positive side, the place is cheap. We ate our fill for less than 15 quids per person. Also i finally figured out where that BT tower is. I have been seeing it from everywhere for 2 years now ... but had never quite found it :) Overall this restaurant would be more at home in East Ham than in W1. read more
