This past Saturday I called right when the store opened - 10AM - looking to buy a rack and a cargo box installed for my 2011 GTI. I wasn't expecting much in the way of availability, but when I got to the shop at 11:15, the fellow manning the counter expertly answered all my questions, helped me narrow down the cargo box that would be a good fit for my car and requirements, and had everything installed less than an hour and a half later. I just want to say just how much this shop came through for me. I spent the last 2-3 weeks trying to figure out what roof rack fit my Jetta Sportwagen. I tried the internet, and REI, and even bought a Yakima mount to retrofit my subaru rack onto my Jetta. It looked really bad, fit really poorly, and whistled like a banshee. I called Rack Solid. I had an adventure planned for the weekend that meant my bikes might have to live on the roof, and no rack to store them on. I thought "hey at least I can go next weekend..." but the first thing they said is "can you come now?" I drove like a bat outta hell to their Berkeley location. They confirmed that the fit that the internet and the Whispbar manual suggested didn't *quite* clear my sunroof, and definitely wouldn't clear once I loaded a big squishy mountain bike on it. They found a kit that did fit (in stock too! Try THAT on the internet) I got a deal because of yelp, and I got to support a really rad local business from guys that love adventures as much as I do. Sure. I could have bought my racks online or at REI. I thought I would give this shop a chance. Slightly more than the aforementioned options but the service here is excellent. After I came back to buy a fairing it seems the the thing wasn't a perfect fit. It didn't sit flush and rattled at higher speeds. They could have said no returns after it was in the car but instead they exchanged it for another make and boom. Perfect fit. I'll be back and will recommend this shop to anyone who asks. read more

I stopped in and spoke with Baz. He was both helpful and really nice. I had had a Subaru / yakima bike rack included in my recent car purchase and it just wasn't what I wanted. Baz showed me the Highlite 2 and it could easily come off and be stored and it was light so easy for me to carry. I went to my Subaru Dealer immediately, had them remove the brand new rack and insisted they take it back and then went right back to Rack Solid and Bought the Highlite 2 that was also on sale. I am very very happy with Rack Solid, Very Happy with Baz and very happy with my purchase. I recommend Rack Solid to anyone who wants to carry their bikes. I am impressed with these guys! They took time to know me and what my needs were, no sales pressure and with respect. After only a few minutes I had all my questions answered and know where I will go (should have gone!) to replace the funky pod I purchased online (a piece of junk). In addition to the solid education I got around various rack systems, many right there for you to see in action, I needed a few parts for my old Yakima bike rack. They gave me a great deal on them. I was surprised they had them at all and had anticipated another internet purchase hassle, not a problem now! Anyway, I know it's tough being in business in the Bay Area these days, I am grateful having these guys local and will purchase a pod from them when I ditch the PoS pod I purchased on the inter-web (beware all you internet shoppers). This is why you buy from the store rather than online! We recently acquired a new Prius V with the funky glass roof, and our old Yakama rack wouldn't cut it. So I did the research on Thule and purchased the roof rack through an online dealer, but couldn't quite figure it out. Since we still needed a cargo box, I drove over to Berkeley and presented my pile of stuff to the excellent staff, who helped me finish the installation and put a new Thule Force box on the roof. They didn't even ask for my credit card until everything fit. No charge for the labor! In addition, the shop discounts the MSRP by 10% to offset our local tax. Sweet! Bought a Thule Xl rooftop box from Nick right after this store opened in mid-November. Nick was super-helpful when it came to thinking through various rooftop storage solutions that would work well for my requirements and vehicle. The vehicle is a large truck and the current rack is non-standard. I also need to be able to carry A TON of gear and equipment around the rooftop box. I'd been struggling to find the right solution online and during a couple of pointless visits to REI prior to my visit to Rack Solid. i have only checked back recently to see that i had two responses to my negative review- one kind private message from the GM asking what he could do to rectify the situation and one incredibly nasty and defensive one as shown below. apparently i have been accused of trying to get a discount by writing my experience with the store? not so, as i said before, i already have a rack on my car now. i placed my order on amazon on 6/6/2015 and received it on 6/9/2015, a day before my review. so the claim that i was in the store "2 days before" is also not accurate. berating a potential customer for relaying their impression of their experience is rather unprofessional, no? i have no vendetta against this store! what on earth would i gain from that? i already saved my money! wouldn't a simple "i'm sorry you felt this way, we reviewed the footage with our employees and in our opinion, felt the customer service and quotes given to you were fair" suffice? i am sticking with my original comments: i did not request a fairing or locks and yet it wasn't, in my opinion, well-explained to me that these were optional and as thus, i felt i received an unfairly inflated quote. i left the store feeling unhappy with the service i received. that is my experience and if security footage makes the owner feel otherwise, good for him! clearly this business does have many other happy customers. i can only say i left feeling like my business was not welcome there. clearly, that is still the case. read more

All I was missing was a little hitch screw for my big ole fancy Thule bike rack. But without it, I was going to be stuck with no way to move my bikes. With little time, I raced over on the off chance these guys could help. They were AH-mazing. They came right out to my car, looked at my rack, and came out with a bolt and drill to put it on. Hands down the most expensive rack shop I found in my calls all over the Bay Area, including Marin and the S. Bay. For the Berkeley/East Bay, I would stick with REI, as their prices are about the same for the same products, cheaper during their sales, and the installations are $65 vs. $250 at Rack Solid. I wanted an installation of a track system and got the $250 quote, the only problem was that Rack Solid only have the Thule or Yakima systems available and I wanted something sturdier and with a larger range of quality products and went with FrontRunner's tracks. Once I knew the delivery date, I called these guys in order to schedule an installation and double-checked the cost: Installation had gone up to $300! The rationale was that I didn't purchase product from them. I questioned them about this, and mentioned that that was higher than any other price I had been quoted anywhere in the Bay, giving them the chance to counter offer, but they did not. Now I am going to The Rack Spot in S. Carlos because they will do it for $225. Duh. Yet another reason to not shop Berkeley. read more

I recently purchased a Diggler scooter that I use for urban mushing, so I needed to get a rack to transport it to the trails. The scooter has a long wheel base and strange dimensions so I was concerned about it fitting on a bike rack. I called these guys up, and they told me to bring the scooter down. They took some measurements, then actually put the scooter on a rack to make sure it would fit. I did the install myself and couldn't figure out how to install the locks, I came back and they did it at no charge. Oh, and by the way, they install the racks for like 15 bucks, so have them do it, believe me! Great customer service, good prices, I will definitely recommend these guys! read more
