I have some musician friends who invited me to check out this fun little place on West Liberty Avenue. It was a Wednesday night, because that's when R-Bar has their "jam night." First of all, the place was pretty packed - a great sign for a newcomer. The crowd was mixed. Mixed ages, mixed genders, mix races. A nice cross-section of our Pittsburgh culture, and everybody seemed to be having a great time. There were quite a lot of different musicians performing throughout the night, and obviously some of the best blues cats in the city are hanging out and playing at this place, because the music was excellent all night. A little bit of rock, but mostly blues and blues rock the night I was there. There were a lot of people drinking tap beer, and that tells me that the management keeps their tap system in good order, so where I might normally order a bottled beer in a strange place on my first visit, I was comfortable getting a Yuengling draft. It was nice and cold, fresh, and served in a clean glass for a very reasonable price. The bartender was very friendly, cute, and attentive. My second round I asked her if there were any craft beers, not expecting there to be any, because in this city, most of the classic bars just serve the standard yellow beers. Much to my surprise, the young lady starting rattling off a pretty nice list of craft brews, including my selection, Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA. Now that I know that R-Bar has good beer as well as good music, I will certainly be making a return visit. Parking is on the street, so you might have to walk a block or two from your car, but West Liberty Avenue in Dormont is pretty safe, so no worries there. My only criticism is a personal thing: I don't like smokey bars. I later found out that the owner is going to change their smoking policy on Wednesday nights in deference to the many excellent musicians who frequent the establishment for the jam night. Wednesdays are going to be "no smoking," and that makes me smile.

We've been Dormont residents for a couple of years now, and I still think that R Bar is the best neighborhood bar around. The decor has been slowly but surely updated over the past couple of years. It is obvious that the establishment is owned by people who take pride in it. The name itself gives you an idea what to expect. It's not "the" R Bar, but simply R Bar. R is "pittsburgh-ese" for our, as in "Our Bar". And it feels like "R Bar" in every respect. I can't finish this review without talking about music. The bar is owned by a couple named Gary and Debbie, Gary is a musician. The first and third Wednesday of each month R Bar hosts the best open stage in town. A great guy named Dave Yoho hosts it and some of the best musicians in the area come together to jam. Jimy Adler, Shari Richards, Craig King and many others stop by to jam. It is always magic. Every Saturday they have live music without a cover. The best local blues and classic rock bands play here regularly. I can say as a musician that everybody loves playing here. A regular jokingly refered to R Bar bar being " on the corner of Blues and Rock and Roll" and it has stuck. This is a great neighborhood bar, but it has also become a great hangout for musicians. I'll see you there...

They're located in Dormont, which makes this a walkable brewery for me (thanks to having friends and family in the area!). A friend and I did indeed walk over to catch up on a recent Friday. The place was surprisingly quiet - my friend mentioned that they get VERY busy during the summer, when people attend events across the road and want to buy beer to go with their market and/or food truck purchases. Speaking of food trucks, Hibachi Lou was parked out front on this particular Friday. So my friend and I got our hibachi orders at the truck out front; ordered our beer and/or cider from the bar; and took everything to a table in Back Alley's dining area to enjoy. While the place wasn't packed it wasn't empty, either; families and groups of friends were playing board games at every other table or so. So, what did I think about the drinks? I'm really glad Back Alley had Arsenal Cider on tap - I ordered a glass as my "sweet treat"/dessert after dinner. First though, I decided to try a beer. Back Alley, if you see this: I'm a BIG fan of sour beers and would order those if they're on the menu in the future! As of now though, no sour beers, so I ordered a "Snowed In" - Back Alley's spiced winter ale. It was a dark beer with a blend of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger, hence the "spiced" moniker. While not something I normally seek out, I really enjoyed it and am glad I tried it! Altogether, it was a 10/10 experience - I'm so glad my friend and I came here for our Friday together. I'll be back!

They do not take reservations and we joked about there being a line. Well, when we showed up 10 minutes before opening, there was indeed a line. However, we went on Valentine's Day to one of the only GF places in the city, so that was to be expected. They were able to accommodate our party of seven no problem, and the staff were so friendly. Our server was amazing. One of our party members is hard to please, but our waiter was on top of it! We ordered a variety of apps for the table - wings, brussel sprouts, and fried provolone. All tasted fantastic. My husband and I agreed we would come just for the wings alone. Perfect smokey flavor. We got the hot buffalo garlic and they weren't super spicy. The marinara with the fried provolone was creamy and delicious. The Brussels were your standard side that every place has with the balsamic glaze. Not mushy at all and the garlic aioli was the best touch. We saw the food coming out and had to make room... the portions are huge! I could only finish half my burger and took the rest home. It was juicy, full of flavor, and easy to handle. Sometimes when you get a massive burger it ends up so sloppy and the toppings just slide off. Not with this! Perfectly stacked and ready to be devoured. The fries were a little greasy but still crispy. They earned my crisp seal of approval! The drinks were strong and everybody loved them. I got the blushing lady and it was sweet but not overly sweet and I could actually taste the spirits. Fantastic bar food options for people who are GF. We visited for the first time because someone in our group was GF and we would definitely go back!

We started with the onion petals which was their weekly special and can't get over how good they were. The breading and sauce were amazing, and they used red onion which we thought was so different! The chicken sandwiches were unbelievable and they give you so much food. They also have really good gluten free buns (that's not always the case at other restaurants). Another thing to note is the servers were incredibly nice and helpful! My only complaint is the service was a little slow, but they were really busy. Highly recommend!!
