Plus, her trusty Singer workhorse sewing machine always delivers. When Joann's in Kingston, NY shut down, two of the longtime employees put their heads and hearts together and opened Frugal Fabrics on Ulster Avenue. This isn't your typical fabric store- big box or otherwise. What sets Frugal apart is that these ladies accept some fabrics as donations and sell. But don't mistake that for low quality. The fabric selection here is impressive AND affordable. While my home leans neutral with rustic woods, concrete and stone, I love to funktify it with pops of color. I don't sew, but I do love beautiful fabric and walking into Frugal F. felt like heaven. The colors, the heft, the textures- especially the pieces I picked up, were delicious. It's a hidden gem for crafters and quilters- neither of which I am, but I'm so glad I came here- plus these ladies know their stuff. By the way, they offer a point system and get 'oink' ;-) points based on how many yards of fabric were purchased.

The prices are great and I found a lot of patterns to be inspired by. I plan to spend the rest of this dreary day planning some projects. It was so nice to chat with the proprietors. I love to support local businesses and I hope that this new place finds lots of success.

I had…read morebeen going to Ehrlich Decorating & Upholstery in Hartford and was beyond pleased with their selection; their customer service was also top notch. But there was a specific fabric I couldn't find at Ehrlich's so I had to go looking for another source. Mila had MUCH more fabric on hand. They also have a lot of fabric you can order - about the same amount as Ehrlich's, but different kinds. After spending months (literally) trying to find a specific fabric at Ehrlich's, Jo Anne's, etc, I found it in 15 minutes at Mila. The only downside to Mila is that the owner (I presume) lacks social grace and customer service skills. I found him to be pushy and incredibly condescending (and not just to me). I also had the distinct feeling he was rushing me and trying to avoid having to place a custom order. He's the type, you know, who is always right and you're an idiot. I hate those types! I would have given this 5 stars if it weren't for the owner. If you're looking for a robust alternative to your usual fabric/upholstery place, try Mila, but try to work with one of the women. Hopefully they won't roll their eyes at you...

He came from a time I remember when people relied on the expertise of the owner who knew their business before the mass market stores. He is a know-it-all because he does! Try to find anyone at Joanns who knows anything about home dec. I have been a seamstress for 40 years and there has never been a time that he steered me wrong or didn't know the answer to my dilemma. He may not be smooth but I know that he is doing his best for every customer. If you want the right fabric for the right job and want it done right. You can count on Milas. The ladies he has there are not just clerks they all have extensive experience and are very helpful.
