It depends on what you are looking for if I recommend this place. They are pleasant, helpful, friendly. But if they don't have your item there is no suggestion for an alternative product. I went there many years for sewing machine repair, I never knew they didn't repair them on-site. And this last time they simply said a part broke, didn't say which part, and it was un repairable, I understand it was a vintage machine. Also pieces of my machine were missing when I got it home. Maybe used on another repair. And they get $40.00 upfront and that is not refundable even though they didn't do squat to your machine. read more

My 20 year old Pfaff machine began to respond only intermittently to the foot pedal. I brought it in to this shop for repair. When I returned for the machine, the repair technician told me that he could not fix it and that it now did not work at all. He advised that I give up on it and buy a new machine. I brought the machine home. My husband took a look, and discovered that the Close to Home technician had disconnected the computer and removed the batteries! This is why it no longer worked at all whereas it had worked intermittently before I brought it into Close to Home. My husband reconnected the computer board and put batteries back in. The machine started to work intermittently again. He could not get it to work all the time. I took it to another repair shop (New England Sewing. The repairman there was able to tell me right away that all the machine needed was a new foot pedal. I emailed the store owners about what happened but never heard back. I must amend my previous review regarding feeling overcharged for unnecessary service for my bobbin tension issue. Ron reached out to me back on January 27 th and left me a voicemail apologizing for the confusion surrounding which service was needed for my bobbin tension issue and he offered me a full refund and told me to bring my machine in to be fixed. I truly appreciated this offer and only accepted $100 back of the 146 I paid because I did not expect them to fix the problem for free, I just wanted to pay what was fair for what was really needed. Ron was very sweet and appreciated that and we ended our transaction with a hug. I'm still not sure my machine is stitching correctly because nobody I showed my sample stitch out to (and the one the technician did) said a word about if it was supposed to look the way it does so I did not bring my machine in to be re checked. I'm looking forward to the free Master your Embroidery Machine class as soon as it is available when I have the time off. Maybe in the class I will learn how to adjust the bobbin correctly. read more

The best reason to shop at Close To Home is the knowledgeable staff. Marsha and Cheryl obviously share my love of quilting and textiles as do most people who work in quilting stores, but these ladies also are experts on sewing machines. Both Cheryl and Marsha's advice was "right on" when I was having issues with my machine. Marilyn, the owner, also helped me out with machine issues. I would highly recommend purchasing a sewing machine from Close To Home because the staff truly understands sewing machines and they can get you back to the fun of sewing in no time if you should run into a snag with your machine. Bought my first brand new sewing machine here. Went in multiple times during decision making process...they were so patient and helpful when trying to pick out and learn about different machines. (I was upgrading from a used 40 year + old model) Had a little trouble the first time I set it up, I brought it in without calling and a different woman was there, took the machine, opened it up & fixed it-then showed me what had happened and how to fix it myself. I went to order some feet for my wife's Bernina machine that she bought there. They didn't have either of the two and didn't offer much help past that. There were two people there. The one that helped me seemed nice but didn't know anything I was asking for. She would just turn to another woman there and repeat what I said. The other woman would then tell the woman working with me the answer like I wasn't standing there. She came across like they didn't want their business, it was kind of awkward. She finally did address me when she said she didn't think the item I needed to order wouldn't make it before Christmas and suggested checking online. This was during a special night set up for husbands to shop for their wife's. They were offering a 20% sale which was the reason I wanted to get them there and was surprised they were sold out. Overall it was a really bad and strange shopping experience. Because of the 20% off I called the Southington location from my car (you would think the Glastonbury store would have offered). The Southing store did have one of the feet in stock and said I could order the other one. The woman who talked to me was nice and told me she could have the other foot delivered to my house but said it would cost me $3. I agreed and said I would be there soon and explained I was in the parking lot of their Glastonbury location. She said she was about to leave but would set everything up at the desk. I got to the Southington store and picked up the foot and ordered the second one. I was charged the $3. I get a notice from the post office a few days later that I had a package to pick up with postage due. I get to the post office, wait in line (it's Christmas time so it is busy) and pick up my package I paid $3 for. The Southington store stuck 2 stamps on it and put it in the mail. They charged me $3 and I ended up paying for the remaining postage because the 2 stamps didn't cover it. I asked the postal clerk how much the postage should have been and it was just under the $3 dollars. Is another $2 on top of the $3 I paid gonna kill me? No, but what a great way to motivate me to take the time to write this review and say I will never give them any of my money again. I will go out of my way if I need a Bernina dealer. read more

Is it possible to choose negative stars? This store's customer service is HANDS DOWN the single worst I have ever, EVER experienced. I visited 2 yrs ago and they were so incredibly rude. I went in again on a whim a few days ago looking for help ordering something in volume and was astounded at their attitudes. When I asked if they could help me with ribbon (mind you I was standing about 10' from a rack of ribbon roles) the woman told me "We don't sell ribbon." When I pointed at the rack and asked "What's that?" She stumbled and said "Well, that's all we have." I showed her the unique color of grosgrain I was looking for and she said "No way!" So I proceed to pick up a roll of theirs, almost identical. She says "Well, that's all we have and it's thinner than yours." So I say "Ok well this might be perfect! Could you order a large quantity for me? She says she has to ask the manager. I follow her to the manager who refuses to make eye contact with me. Finally, I lean into the managers line of view & say "Hi! I'm right here!" She proceeds to tell me "...the price to order would be VERY expensive." To which I reply "Ma'am, price is no object," She then flat out says she will not help me. I was so angry I said "Well, judging by how busy your store is, (there wasn't a soul there), business must be great & you're to busy to help me with a large order. Ill take my business elsewhere." I then went to 3 other stores in town & spoke with2 of my crafty neighbors who all said "Oh God! Why did you go there, they're horrible!" STAY AWAY if you want nice sales people read more

There are three store locations and I was in Southington, CT one today. I had been there before and there were othing short of beyond helpful with a machine issue I had. Today I was looking to purchase a used sewing machine and I walked in and a sales person was working on a machine and turned around and asked me what I was looking for and had a smile on her face. I said I had looked at a Singer sewing machine on line and I knew they didn't sell them and I told her what features I was looking for. (was there for all of 2 minutes) when I hear a man behind me interrupt our conversation and he says snotaly that he would not recommend a Singer and that I would be bringing it in immediately for service and then points me in the direction of the 1K machines with the features I was asking for. I started to say to him my friend had purchased a machine from them and it was currently in for service due to issues. I think when he heard that as well as the fact that I could not pay 1K for a a new machine. I became a hot potato. He turned to the sales lady and said you have to help her I have a meeting. As he is walking away he is still rudely saying I will be servicing your Singer machine very soon if you buy one. Mind you this was the OWNER of the shop! Then he yells out I have a Janome that was a trade in that he hasn't serviced yet but it will be $400.00. I think at that point the sales lady was embarassed by this man's behavoir and says to me that she will take my name and number and call me if they have anything that comes in used.she will call. I looked at her as we were walking to the desk very quietly...I am starting to wonder why I even came into this store and she krinkled her eyes again like she was embarasses. I don't care if they have the most high tech used machine and they were going to sell it of $1.50 to me, I would pay a thounsand dollars before I ever gave them any business ever agaiin!
