Last night I met a friend for dinner at Queen's. An oldie but a goodie. I tend to frequent places because they are comforting and warm. Queen's ticks off every box. It's an intimate restaurant that encourages conversation, savouring your food and lingering over one more glass of wine. They also have a fantastic patio that is packed all summer.
We started with a half litre of Gnarled Vine Cabernet. We shared the Caesar salad which has a tangy dressing that is unique to Queen's. We opted for no bacon and I am still not sure if that was a good decision. My friend ordered a Carbonara that she substituted with grilled veggies. I ordered the Penne Alla Carbonara. It's very creamy and decadent. Well worth the discomfort I felt later on that night. We passed on dessert, it's a lot of starch and the helpings are generous.
One complaint I had was that they did not serve bread. Apparently a consequence of the pandemic however I think it is important, particularly as an accompaniment to Italian food. You want to soak up the sauces.
The service was excellent, friendly and attentive without being irritating. The server clearly wanted to be there and liked her job.
I would recommend a reservation. It is such a lovely place to go to while away a winter night. read more
