I've always loved the crispy fried tofu and chicken Pad Thai at Java House! I just celebrated my birthday here and have been going here for decades since the 90's. I'm so happy it's survived the pandemic and many changes on Queen St. West. I'm also so happy the quality and taste of the food is still the same after all these years. Their hummus and warm pita bread and fresh veggie rolls are always great starters to share. The ambiance of the patio on a sunny, warm day is always fun with friends there. Unfortunately places like these are a dying breed in this part of downtown, being replaced by overpriced trendy and pretentious bars and restaurants. I love this place because it's a very comfortable and low key café/tavern with cheap dependable food and friendly service. The menu is part pub/diner food and part Thai/Vietnamese food. I tried both and I liked them all. I had the vegetarian tofu pad Thai and I was pleasantly surprised that the tofu was served crispy (and not greasy). It was simple and good and for $12.50 it's an excellent deal and you can't go wrong. The veggie burger was also good and I really like the fries as it has a very light crispy batter. Almost all of the items on the menu were under $12, and they often have combo food & drink specials. There is WiFi and it's good place to have some lunch, a beer or coffee while doing some work. Sitting by the window makes for a good spot to people watch on Queen St. This is definitely not a high end restaurant so I don't understand some of the poor reviews. It's a chill, humble neighbourhood spot frequented by residents in the area -- who cares that the furniture is worn and the interior is quirky and old, this is true character and charm you don't find in a newer establishment, especially in this part of the city. read more

We were strolling down Graffiti Alley when we saw that this place's patio looked animated, with lots of people, we decided to stop by to have a couple of drinks. We were seated immediately, the waitress was very nice and friendly and the poor girl was alone for 15-20 tables, she was running everywhere! The restaurant itself on the inside and the outside is not the cleanest and quite frankly, going to the restrooms was a little bit of a scary experience. Stumbled upon this place and decided to try it out with my boyfriend. First impression, the place looked a bit rundown and lacked upkeep. We were seated immediately, it was pretty empty on a Tuesday evening. After looking over the menu, the food here is very inexpensive and they have daily specials as well which was appealing at first. Boyfriend ordered the burger with no pickles but it still came with pickles. He said it was decent for the price but annoying they couldn't follow a simple request when it wasn't even busy. I ordered the Caesar salad with chicken (3.00$ extra). The chicken was dry and wasn't impressive but the romaine lettuce was fresh and crispy at least. Can't really complain much for the price to be honest. Beer here is cheap. It is incredibly rare to find a place that offers premium beer for 13.50$. No complaints about the beer. If ever in the area, I wouldn't mind coming back for drinks but would not bother with the food here. Story time: while we were enjoying our meal a woman on the patio made a crazy and dangerous mistake. She was dining alone with her large dog. The dog was very sweet and lovely with people. At one point the woman is obviously going to go inside to use the bathroom. She left the dog at the table however the dangerous and crazy mistake she made was she tied the dog to the plastic chair. At first the dog looked worried and started to slowly follow her. But then the chair started following the dog. In about 2.5 seconds the dog got really frightened and began trying to run away from the chair. People started to get up to help the dog but the dog had already hit the panic button and started running in the patio and then ran full speed out into the street. A young woman fell right in the patio trying to grab her. (She said she was OK and later I saw that she was dining and talking with her friends.) the dog ran down the side street towards construction area. People on the patio were running to try to get her as well as construction workers and pedestrians. She was absolutely terrified. I was one of the people that ran. By the time I got to the construction area just down the street she was coming back full tilt and running away from everybody. She ran to onto Queen Street. I was so scared that she was going to get run over by a car. She then ran back and started to run towards the construction area again. It looked like she was trying to make it around the block. When I got back to the construction area there was a man sitting on the ground out with a can of pop emptied on the ground beside him. He had been close lined by the dog and the chair and knocked right off his feet. He was bleeding from his elbow. The dog then ran past me again as well as all the other people trying to catch her. And she ran into the alleyway. Finally the owner came running out of the restaurant and the dog upon seeing her looked so relieved and so vulnerable. There was only a small piece of chair still attached to her the rest of the plastic chair had broken up. I told her that the man was on the street bleeding and that she should probably just check in on him. She went back to the restaurant and I got the impression she wasn't planning on checking on the fellow. I went back to the fellow he had definitely hit his head on the concrete but he was speaking and talking and he had people coming. He said he was fine and he was glad the dog was ok. I hope he went to seek medical attention. The construction workers that were there told me that the dog had tried to break through the high construction fencing. Thank goodness the fencing was there or the dog would've probably been gone. It was all such a crazy accident. When I got back to the table at the patio where my friend was waiting for me, I found out that the owner of the dog had left right away. I hope the dog wasn't injured. It must've been horrifying for the owner as well to have that experience. And I hope that she's OK. In terms of the restaurant, the food was pretty good, we had a friendly server and the manager was lovely. And it's definitely a dog friendly patio. read more

Of course the bank machine inside was not dispensing cash, so I got to search for one nearby, down the street. Lazy management to not have modern conveniences by now; perhaps hoping to skip the 'tax man'. Pad Thai was decent, if they served it somewhere else I might even return. Earlier today I made my 1st visit to Java House in a few years. I've been there a number of times over the years but this was only my 2nd time eating there and I think I had the same choice as at my last visit: a BLT. I was with a friend and we arrived earlier in the afternoon; as it was also a Thursday the venue was fairly barren overall. For that reason, our orders came quite promptly and I enjoyed my sandwich. One thing I'd forgotten about was the quite reasonable food prices which extend to their daily specials; each one includes 1 entrée and 1 premium beer or another beverage selection (depending on the day). A couple other reasons for the reasonable prices are that Java House is fairly small overall and not upscale. I've always liked the venue when I've gone there and this latest visit was no exception. Being on the corner also makes the smaller venue more conspicuous and thereby easier to find. We might have sat on the patio (which I did for my 1st time at my last visit) but due to the inclement weather that option didn't seem to be available today. I would recommend Java House to anyone who likes a fairly good variety of affordable food/meal choices. Their beer selection is also pretty good for a smaller, not upscale venue. read more

When you buy a pitcher of beer no matter the brand of beer it always tastes like metal! It's either they don't clean the taps for the beer or they are using the wrong cleaning product on the tap. Surely in the history of the Java House it has happened at least once or twice. There are a lot of bars in Toronto; there are a lot of bars within a literal stones throw (provided you've got an arm like Travis Snyder) of the Java House. So why head there? They have cheap food - $5.00 sandwiches, $6.00 combos - and then have $11.50 pitchers of beer. All the Mill Street varieties are there, with a few others - like Creemore - on the side. Java House isn't a loud place where the bumping music takes over. It's a quiet location to sit with friends, drink beer, and talk. If you're a loud, obnoxious, university student you'll find yourself better suited two city blocks north, but if you're looking to spend some quality time with good people, this is where you want to be. read more

Ahhh, so many memories at this place. Overall, I like Java House. I'm always tempted to stop by when doing a bar crawl in the area mainly because drinks are incredibly cheap. They have a patio. Food's OK and also incredibly cheap. It's a total dive which you'll realize walking into the place, so if you're someone who doesn't like that kind of thing, this might not be your jam. The reason I'm not ranking this place higher is the service. I know, I know, it's a dive (and I love dives) -- but does that necessarily mean you need to worry about not getting your order taken on a fairly quiet Wednesday night? Last time I was there it was mostly empty inside with a few people on the patio and service was moving at a glacial pace. A regular favourite of mine, this place is just a treasure of a simple easy choice! All the food on the menu I have had so far is good quality and good portion sizes and so very CHEAP! Seriously a sandwich and fries combo for under 8$ you have to go all the way to like Etobicoke or Mexico to beat that! And the BLT is great, like seriously a proper generous serving of bacon on that bad boy unlike some places where you get a piece of bread with a whole lettuce on! I have walked by this place so many times but I had never gone in because of the exterior. With the graffiti writing I thought they weren`t looking to me as a client. At the same time, the name is java house and i can`t ignore the thought me it might be a great coffee house. Oh, i wasn`t right in so many ways. This is a place to hang, meet your friends and if you are going to eat - it really is about filling up for a low price. The coffee, is something to drink not for coffee hounds especially when you see second cup coffees being drunk. That pretty much says it all. I can`t get over how inexpensive eating at this place is. I remember coming to Java House many years ago and that good experience brought me back. HOWEVER, I did not get a chance to try it again. The server refused to seat me on the main patio. He did not want to give up a seat and wanted to wait for bigger parties that would be arriving in 30 minutes (his words). I pointed out a small table and he mumbled something about joining it to another table. Really? He offered a seat on the extended patio by the road where the tables and chairs looked tattered and unclean. Given that we are all coming out of a two year period of isolation, it would have been nice to treat myself to a patio dinner but I would like a friendly welcoming place that gives me comfort with clean tables and chairs. This might be my new favorite spot for cheap eats. Wanting to try someplace new, my friend and I came here since I wanted to have after work dinner and drinks... On a budget. We ordered a pitcher of sangria for $15 which came with cute glasses with cherries. The sangria was basic wine and orange juice but it was easy to drink and gave me a nice buzz. My friend ordered chicken pad Thai and spring rolls while I ordered chicken wings. The spring rolls were piping hot and crispy. Not bad for $3.95. The chicken pad Thai looked like something I could make at home but for $6 it was decent. My wings were lightly breaded and served with a yummy, sweet BBQ sauce. Overall, I was impressed with how good the food was for such good value. I don't know why people complain about the service, we were taken care of, checked up on and our food was quickly brought out. You do have to walk through the kitchen to go down to the washroom but you walk outside the kitchen not exactly through the cooking. Well, I woke up Sunday morning. With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt. There weren't too many greazzy spoon breakfast options around my hotel so I stumbled around Sunday looking for one. First of all CASH only! And they do NOT separate bills. They got daily deals which are pretty good: On monday: $10.25 for a premium burger and a beer. Premium beers include: Steam-whistle, Mill St. Organic, Milll St Tankhouse... Look at the pictures posted to see the details. Locale: Looks pretty ghetto, the chairs and the tables are warn out. The table I was sitting on was fully scratched out with signatures and random signs. Food: Food is good for the price, but definitely not expect to eat great. I can't believe I have not rated Java House! I have some friends who swear by the joint and others who would need a giant historical oversized pole just to get near the entrance. Myself, well I'm a bit divided. The food is just meh, and the beer is okay. There are sometimes decent deals on pitchers and food specials. I've never had any health issues after eating the food. Only thing I dislike are the washrooms. You have to pass the open kitchen to get to them and they are really gnarly, so it really does destroy your appetite.
