    Eggs Benedict
    Kervin H.

Food: 2 Stars Service: 3 Stars Ambience: 3.5 Stars Fill Factor: Satisfied I have not done brunch in years so when my partner suggested it I was excited to go. We wanted to try a new place so after a search we decided to try The Porch Light. The short version is that my first brunch experience in years was a complete disappointment which is very unfortunate. I ordered the Eggs Benny not wanting to take any risks because what can possibly go wrong with an Eggs Benedict... Apparently a lot. I started with the salad and first thing I noticed was a lack of flavor. Maybe I just picked a leaf without dressing so I took another bite and another but same thing. That's strike 1. Then I proceeded to cut into the side of my Eggs Benedict and I noticed no runny yolk oozing out. Maybe I cut too much to the side so I cut it right down the middle... Not a drop of yolk. The egg was nearly fully cooked with the bare minimum of yolk that was still slightly uncooked. I cut into the second one and while it was slightly better than the first, it was also almost completely cooked through as well. Not a single drop of yolk touched my plate. That's strike 2. I also want to note that 1 of 2 eggs in my partner's meal was runny so I don't believe it was supposed to be cooked through. I was incredibly disappointed at this point but was holding out hope that the taste would redeem this whole experience. Nope didn't happen. The hollandaise sauce was bland to the point where it felt like there was no sauce at all. Me and my partner did taste a subtle sour flavor on the eggs which we did not like. When we weren't tasting the sourness the egg whites didn't taste very pleasant either. I love eggs and have no issues with the taste of the egg whites so it was weird that I felt this way. Strike 3. The only decent part of the meal were the home fries which were a bit crispy on the outside but even then they were not anything special. Service here was acceptable. The folks here were very friendly and it was busy when we arrived. Maybe it was due to that reason that once our orders were taken it was hard to get anyone's attention for some condiments. When we finally flagged someone down they brought just single a cup of ketchup which we had to share between the two of us. I saw several other tables with squeeze bottles of ketchup so that didn't help with the experience either. The establishment was bright and clean with a good amount of seating. As mentioned it was very busy when we arrived so we were seated near the back of the restaurant which was a lot darker but otherwise was comfortable. I hate to give bad reviews but this experience just left me with such a bad taste in my mouth (figuratively and literally). We were both so unsatisfied with our meals that I actually looked up other brunch places and was this close to actually doing another brunch to get my fix. After this experience I definitely won't be back and do not recommend this place.

Two friends are currently in town on vacation. They are rarely in town at the same time. I met one of them in grade 8 and the other in grade 9. All of us know one another, mainly through French and music classes in high school. One lives in Victoria. The other resides in Hong Kong. I tend to see the former more often. I haven't seen the latter in nearly a decade. Yikes! We decided to do brunch on Saturday. They wanted to stay in our old neighbourhood of the Beaches. I did a search and found The Porch Light. I asked if they were good with the menu and location. They were. Yay! One of them went ahead and made our reservation. This eatery is in the upper Beaches. The upper distinction is still odd to me. No one says lower Beaches. Why upper? I describe it as a few blocks away from where my friends and I went to high school. I got there fifteen minutes early. I parked on Kingswood Road, which is free. I walked over, opened the door, and my friend from Hong Kong was sitting there. Her punctuality hasn't changed. Neither has mine. We ordered smoothies while waiting for our friend. I got a strawberry banana smoothie. This place offers dairy substitutes, which is great. I went with almond beverage. My friend got the blueberry pomegranate smoothie with milk. Our friend from Victoria tends to be fashionably late. Again, all of us haven't changed. Perhaps she was ten minutes late, but we were chatting that we didn't even notice. We all love food. Taking photos of what we are about to eat is normal. I got the brunch poutine with baked beans. It comes with two poached eggs over home fries, with curds and hollandaise sauce on top. My friend from Victoria was also eyeing this dish, but went with bacon. I would normally do bacon, but I had overdosed on it the other night when I ordered a double-patty burger with tons of bacon. Our other friend got the Porch Light burger, which came with smoked cheddar, aioli, arugula, pickled onions, with a side of fries. It's off the lunch menu. It's a lovely, casual atmosphere here. My friend noticed that this place is affiliated with Bud's Coffee Bar on Queen Street East, across from where I went to elementary school. Her phone automatically connected to the wifi, so the password and wifi name are the same at both places as. Nice! Our meals came fairly quickly. The kitchen is in the basement. I loved my meal. The home fries were done perfectly. There were lots of cheese curds and the hollandaise sauce was so smooth. Part of me wanted the poached eggs to be more runny, as the dish came with two crispy slices of toast that would be perfect for dipping. I typically don't like overly runny eggs, with poached eggs as an exception. However, it worked fine putting my eggs on my toast the way that they were. The baked beans were great embedded in everything. They both enjoyed their food. My friend commented hours after we had eaten here that she was still stuffed after eating cheesy potatoes. She summed it up nicely. We sat here for three hours, catching up on our lives. Our server was so nice to take a photo of us. She let us know that she handles the business's Instagram account. She was great and so helpful. The washrooms are downstairs. There are two and are unisex. They were clean. The kitchen is right next door. I got to see the chefs in action while I was briefly downstairs. This place is awesome! I love the dairy alternatives available with their drinks. The food is incredibly delicious and creative. I'm a fan. It's a special place in our old neighbourhood. (366)

Not a bad spot to grab a bite but very standard fare. Went for lunch on a Wednesday, and there are a few tables to dine in. Staff is very friendly and attentive. The food was okay. I got the burger and wedges which was average. The wedges didn't seem fresh, was kind of hard and not a crispy soft texture. Burger was decent with good toppings. We also got the pulled chicken which was a bit dry for my liking but it was a good "healthy" alternative. Price is standard, looking to spend around $15.

I've gone to The Porch Light twice now for brunch and was not let down at all either times! It's a beautiful space with lots of natural light coming in through the front windows. They have ample seating and a special section in the back with toys for kids to play with, that way families can sit back there and let their kids down and play and not interrupt the rest of the restaurant. The first time I got the The Brunch Poutine and was salivating once they brought it too me! It consists of 2 eggs poached, baked beans or bacon, homefries, curds & hollandaise. Everything was cooked to perfect and the cheese curds melted so beautifully. The second time I went I got the Avocado Toast which consists of 2 eggs sunny side (or anyways you want them made), crushed avocados, pea shuts on grilled sour dough. This was also so delicious!! They also have a counter full of fresh baked goods, croissants, scones, muffins, salted chocolate caramel tarts and those looked delicious as well!!

A lovely brunch place around a couple of nail salons and specialty shops. Because we were in the middle of a Christmas rush, service was slower but the waitstaff were super friendly and patient which made up for it. The breakfast specials included your classic avocado roasts and egg benedict with hollandaise sauce. Our cappuccinos were cold but I enjoy cold coffee anyways so no biggie. When our courses came they were very fresh, the tuna tasted amazing in the salad. The prices are a little steeper than what you get out of it but I'd come again for a brunch as it's a perfect location for a couple of friends to catch up.

Nestled on Queen East, its warm, wood-fired vibe makes every visit special. The Favorites We kicked things off with their saffron‑kissed Arancini--bite‑sized spheres of rice and smoked mozzarella, godsends dipped into bright tomato-marinara and pesto. Next came the Pizzano pizza: a perfectly blistered crust layered with pepperoni, Calabrian chilies, fior di latte, hot honey drizzle, and aged Parmigiano--an addictive balance of sweet‑heat and savory richness. The pillowy Gnocchi arrived next--smothered in butternut squash purée, earthy wild mushrooms, hazelnuts, sage brown‑butter, and a final snow of Parmigiano. And the Fritto Misto was a crunchy delight: lightly breaded shrimp, calamari, scallops, all perked up with zesty lemon‑caper aioli. Setting the Tone We started with cocktails, which hit the right note--elegant, balanced, and a little unexpected. They added a celebratory lift that carried right into the meal. Service was smooth and welcoming, striking that hard-to-nail mix of polish and warmth.

I bought - Olive loaf - Croissant (plain)] - Fig tart - Pear tart - Pâté en croute The olive loaf had a loooot of olives in it. It tastes great by itself, but I dipped it in good olive oil and balsamic. Great!!! The croissant was light, airy, and flaky. Nice butter flavor follows the bite. Fig tart and pear tart had a lot of fruits in them, not too sweet, which I appreciated. They do not cover the taste up with cream fillings and extract the ingredients' character and best texture/flavors/tastes. Also had a good buttery kick! Pate en croute has a lovely looking. The color of cranberries and pistachio makes it look festive & gorgeous. This savory food comes with slices of pickles which had a naturally sour, gentle flavor, which gave it a refreshing spike. This must be the place!…read more Our first trip to Toronto and boy did we have fun. From delicious food to sipping wine, and everything in between, Toronto was a city to explore. Ladybug Wine Bar is a cute but also sophisticated wine bar located on King Street, steps away from shopping and restaurants. We stopped in here on a snowy Sunday before our flight home. They also serve Sunday Brunch. We grabbed a few open seats at the comfy bar. They do not offer wine flights, which made this experience pretty darn expensive but SOOOO worth it. We had such a fun time and the people working were so nice, we honeslty did not want to leave. They were willing to help with our selections. We actually ordered all their Reds by the glass. I know, but there were only about 6 and we had to try them all. I like to say "go big or go home" LOL! We loved almost all except for maybe a few. We ended up also ordering a charcuterie while we sip. And of course I brought a bottle home with me. If you are ever in Toronto, please check out Ladybug wine bar, it is fantastic, you won't want to leave. Cheers!

Golden Pigeon occupies the space where Ben Wicks used to be, which is below street level with stairs in the front. Inside it is fairly dark with various games situated on the left/south side of the venue, and when I walked around inside I noticed a shelf with board games at the wall on the north side. I wasn't planning on staying late so I only ordered one beer (Devil's Pale Ale from Great Lakes Brewery) but everyone else with me ordered food and beer including desserts; the food all looked and smelled quite nice to me and the consensus from my friends was that their choices were quite enjoyable. My beer was quite good too and their draft menu features a wide variety of quality beers on offer. The prices for both food and beer are pretty standard for the type of venue this is. Our service was fairly prompt and quite friendly; there were 2 skee ball games not too far from where we sat, one or both of which were frequently played by others while we were there. They were loud enough to make conversation a little more difficult so I took a star off of my rating for that. Being a German Beer Hall styled venue, I do understand that the overall 'ambiance' conveyed will be loud and somewhat boisterous. By the time I left around 9:30 pm it was somewhat more crowded inside while the patio had largely cleared. I quite enjoyed my first visit to Golden Pigeon and I hope to revisit before too long to have a different beer and maybe some food.
