It was a sunny May day and we were looking to hit a patio somewhere in the Beaches area. We'd passed the Beacher Cafe on the way to our initial destination and remarked that it reminded us a lot of the restaurants and patios they have in Hawaii. It's hard to beat that, so it was no surprise that we wound up there about an hour later. It's certainly a comfortable, relaxing patio but what about the food, you're asking? I decided to get the Chicken Souvlaki Pita, which also comes with fries and a Greek salad. It's actually a lot better than you'd think. The fries aren't really anything special (but they were hot!) and the salad is fine, but it's in the pita that this dish shines. The chicken was freshly prepared and surprisingly juicy, while the accompanying tzatziki contains that tangy, garlicky zing that you'd expect. I don't get out to the Beaches too often but you can bet I'll be returning to the Beacher Cafe the next time I'm out there. read more

I really love this place. It's a long walk east from Leslieville but I really think it's been well worth it. They're brunch menu is full of variety-- one day their specials board offered curry and spaghetti along with the usual bennys and such. I was impressed considering were hard pressed to find any brunch in Leslieville before noon these days... not ideal for people like me up at the crack of dawn with fussy babies. The home fries with brunch dishes are excellent, highly recommend at least a side order of these. The staff always promptly bring watermelon out to the kids which is seriously Awesome. Service has been excellent every time even with an overwhelming turn out and less than ideal number of staff available. Pandemic and all that. I have only good things to say. Enjoy! read more

My boyfriend and I stopped by here over the weekend and had an ok experience. The restaurant has some weird rules that do not allow you to buy drinks if you choose to wait for a seat on the patio. Ok! We decided to wait and ended up waiting about 10 minutes. When we got to the patio, the waitress was trying to squish an extra table onto the patio since it was jazz fest and in really high demand. This left us with very little room to sit comfortably until about 10 minutes later when they returned and told us it looked like too little space and they were going to set the tables up the way they were originally. Lol The Food: I ordered a chicken sandwich with gluten free bread and my boyfriend ordered a chicken kabob dinner. The only gluten free items were a beet salad, which I didn't think would be filling enough and the chicken sandwich. I had a feeling I'd feel more full with that so that's what I got. The salad portion of my meal was just a combination of mixed greens without any vegetables. I thought that was kind of odd so I added some of the tomato from my sandwich onto the salad. Unfortunately the gluten free bread was buttered. It tasted like butter and I didn't bother asking as they weren't the most hospitable employees but I began to experience problems after. I'm assuming they forgot butter has dairy in it and someone just added it to my bread out of habit. Oy Vey! My boyfriend enjoyed his dinner and was surprised they couldn't make the souvlaki gluten free. I was too but oh well. The Drinks: I ordered a lime margarita and it was really good. It was a big portion and it tasted delicious. My boyfriend ordered the only beer they had on tap and he enjoyed it. Would I return? We asked to have water right at the beginning & asked several times & never came. At the end my guest had to go to the washroom for a sip of water. I had never heard of this place before yesterday. However, I'm always up to trying something new. This place feel like you're sitting on a patio in Florida. Not too hot, a nice breeze and not a lot of street traffic. Menu offers a variety of cafe staples, both breakfast and lunch options and a fairly sizeable drink menu. Their smoothies look divine! I started off with brewed coffee which was flavourful and hot. For the main meal, I had grilled cheese and fries. The grilled cheese was buttery goodness. The fries were hot and fresh; however, there were big pieces of salt on them. They weren't overly salty though so I'm not sure what to think. The restaurant has lots of indoor/outdoor seating and staff are attentive. Price point is reasonable for the size of the portions and service is pretty quick. The creepiest part for me is the washroom that feels like it's in the middle of the kitchen. I felt like I was venturing where I shouldn't go but it was clean and served its purpose. With one of the best patios in the area, the interior though 'timeliness' brings comfort and coziness to those that come here. Known for their breakfast and brunch, they too have a great selection of dinner specials written on the chalk board. Unfortunately we were only here for dessert after our dinner affair just down the road. I decided to try their ever-so decadent Toffee apple cheesecake. Just the sounds of it made me melt lol! As lovely as it sounded, it lived up to its goodness paired with a cappuccino. A couple of friends met with the couple of us for a great day of walking the boardwalk strip out to the end of the wooden line and back up along Queen St. E. This is on the New Year's Day stat so we knew we might not have all the usual options, and we kept eagle eyes out for anything that would do. We had started just before noon with the intention of maybe getting a hot drink and treat and normally that's all I'd care for during a leisurely walk, but between the majority of places being closed and the fact that we actually had worked up some appetite by the time we walked past it, we decided to head in and chow down at Beacher Cafe. By now our expectations were based on our increased appetites. The huge windows and large patio of the building definitely set them even higher. We went in and the lineup was there, but not out the door (yet). We could see the staff were hustling and things were definitely moving. It was only about a minute before we were acknowledged and gave our names. We were told the wait time might be about 20 minutes, and it seemed reasonable given the stat. It also helped that we had each other's company to keep chatting and amusing ourselves while we waited, and checked out the decor and potential table options. Our wait ended up being closer to 10 minutes, which was great. We got a table in the middle of the larger dining room on the east side. It's in a bit of an awkward spot as there are stairs down to the bathrooms very close to the table, and it was crowded, but there's a skylight right above, and the light coming in from the rest of the windows made it nice regardless of the relative seating spot. We started with orders of hot chocolates. One of us didn't get our drink as soon as we should have, as the server misunderstood that she wanted hers immediately rather than wait for our fourth diner to confirm what he was having, so that put a bit of a dent in the rating. They came with decent whipped cream, although the chocolate was your standard mix, i.e., a little too saccharin sweet. Other than that though, the server was helpful with suggestions, got our orders down correctly, and was quite good with the water refills and checking in often but not too often as we went through our meals. We all went with all day breakfast options, and all of us were very pleased with the quality and portions of our food. I got the French toast with sausage and .. ?fruit?. I think it was fruit. I've been too delinquent in finishing this draft .. yes it was fruit, I was just much happier with the thick, fluffy, ever so slightly crisp yummy raisin bread. It was like cinnamon bun egg battered perfection. The syrup came warmed up .. mm mm. Sausages were fine, nothing amazing but nothing to complain about. The fruit was a great finish, likely South American import special as it consisted of grapes and watermelon along with the usual cantaloupe, pineapple, orange. The healthier options were great. 2 of our party had versions with fresh spinach, egg white only option, and some other healthy stuff that looked seriously appetizing, had I not wanted my sugar coma. BF went with his usual no-nonsense bacon and eggs meal and both were cooked nicely. They had daily specials that also looked good both written out on the board, and as we saw them delivered to other tables. Everything was reasonably priced and we went away very satisfied. Solid 4 stars. Could use a little bit of a refresh with the interior and some of the tables are a little tight. Service was decent. Would definitely come back next time we do the beaches/Queen strip walk. I'd likely try for a window side table next time or if the patio is open, there. Good option for the area. read more

This is a solid 3star restaurant. They have a healthy list of daily specials in addition to their regular menu. They are family friendly and have both a kids menu and crayons and colouring books to keep littles busy while you Their fish and chips comes with a single huge piece of haddock and tons of fries. The purple cole slaw is tangy and delicious. Their blackened chicken Caesar comes with delicious house made dressing but less chicken than one might expect (or want). The food is all okay. I have been a regular at this place for as long as I've been living in the neighbourhood. Time passes, servers have come and gone, but the menu, the main chef and the owners have remained the same. While some might argue that this isn't a good thing I beg to differ. Why change a menu that has obviously worked so well? Also while the menu hasn't really changed in a while the daily specials do and they usually offer some amazing stuff. Having been to this place so many times, I eventually found my favourite dishes and whenever I visit I always have one of them. They are either the chicken on a bun sandwich (with fries) or the Mediterranean or Classic pizza. I'd say that the quality is there 99% of the time. The location is great, the owners are fantastic and fortunately the new servers always seem to be spot on too. I had some experiences that weren't the best but each and every time I raised a concern, the feedback was well received and I was provided with a satisfactory resolution. Lots of room (people not bumping into your the whole time). There is a nice patio for warmer days and you can get in and our in a hurry. Came for Saturday breakfast and really enjoyed it. There were plenty of available tables so we didn't have to wait. Service was friendly and surprisingly fast. We both ordered off the specials menu - I had the eggs benny prosciutto and my wife had the omelette. The benny was excellent - real hollandaise (a must!) but their twist was to serve it on prosciutto instead of ham and add some pesto to the hollandaise to complement the italian flavours. The egfgs were good quality and perfectly cooked. They also substituted gluten free bread for me without any issues - nice! The omelet was also excellent - bacon, peameal bacon, green onions and mozzarella made for an delicious flavour combination. I'll be back! read more

The Beacher has been part of Queen Street East for a little over 20 years. In that time it has evolved with the changing face of society. One might say this modernization has been a double edged sword for us locals that grew up in the area and remember when their prices matched the quality and quantity of the food, not the $1000 paintings on the walls and the nouveau "trendiness" of the location. Please don't get me wrong; the food is quite nice and I've never met a rude server. It is very clean. The atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed and pleasant, while the spacious accommodations assure that every patron is welcome to stay after their meal to nurse a cup of coffee while chatting with friends. However, over the years I have seen the portions shrink and the prices climb, fluctuating heavily with the seasons and holidays/festivals. At times I've wondered if The Beacher has mistaken its food prices for the daily gas-prices. Please refer to my attached photo for an example of "Jazz Fest" prices. After eating this thimble-full of salty and burned soup* I commented to a staff member in a humorous/serious tone that I had never had soup that cost 50 cents per spoonful. To their credit not one, but two servers apologized and agreed that it was overpriced, and even volunteered the owner's email address to formerly complain. (No response yet, dare I hold my breath?) Regardless, when the servers feel embarrassed to hand customers their bill you know something is definitely wrong. (Don't even get me started on the portion size of that $8 hummas.) But despite the glaring flaws that have crept into the carefully maintained image of being a 'family friendly & affordable restaurant', I still like The Beacher. I enjoy going there with friends after a long walk on the beach, or in the late evening for a bottomless cup of coffee and some good conversation. (Their late closing hours are wonderful.) I simply no longer order anything larger than an appetizer. A few years ago I might have given 4 stars, a couple years ago I might have awarded 3, but between the portions/quality I've received lately and the added insult of price-gouging, I feel compelled to offer up a solid 2. This time my friend took me to The Beacher while visiting her in the end of Queen Street East. She said the seafood section is very good here, so I had to try. This was just before my trip to Nova Scotia, so I decided to have daily special of mussels in wine sauce. My friend had a nice cocktail and a baquette. Food came fast and my mussels looked great and smelled the same! They were accompanied by few slices of bread and butter. When they were gone, server brought me more. It was definitely a hearty meal. Nothing to take with me, as I ate it all :) This was a nice-looking place, not busy for a summer afternoon, there were plenty spots on the patio, so that is where we enjoyed your meals. We visited Beacher because it was listed as one of the kid friendly restaurants in the area. We were seated and left alone for a good 10 minutes. Not a problem. As we're ordering, my daughter is playing with a glass, the waiter pulls the glass from my daughters hands, completely awkward and uncalled for. We don't make a big deal. Whoa! First experience here wasn't for brunch, but for an early dinner. I had the chicken souvlaki, which was a heaping serving of perfectly cooked meat. The breakfast here is really good and really well priced. I was also surprised at how good the pizza was here. I've had it numerous times and they do it better than most pizza places. For years we spent our hard earned cash here. YEARS! Then one day our daughter then 2.5 years old was a tad too loud and rambunctious. We were asked to leave and to go somewhere else!!!!!! The owner of this establishment is unbelievable rude and he has no table side manner. He treats his serving staff terribly and can't hang onto employees. Their food is way over priced and not even that good. I am only too happy to spend my hard earned cash somewhere else. I'm reviewing this spot as a dessert spot 1. Because I've only been there once, and only ate dessert 2. Because a search for dessert spots in the Beaches at this time, really yields nothing spectacular (other than Ed's Real Scoop, but since these places are nearly side by side, you can have your cake and ice cream AND eat them too!) My boyfriend and I were looking for a dessert spot in the area and weren't overly excited about booking it out to the nearest Cafe Demetre on the Danforth, so we thought we'd just cruise down Queen Street East and test our luck. We saw the cute, candlelight Beacher Cafe and thought we'd drop in. We weren't disappointed - the place has a number of fresh cakes and pies by the slice, and a diverse menu of wines and specialty cocktails. My boyfriend was even able to order a B52, as they had no specialty coffees on the menu (the only thing that was a little strange, as it's winter and all the cocktails listed were iced) and yet it was made perfectly to order. We had the Chocolate Raspberry Cake and 1 slice was giant enough to satisfty the sweet tooth of us both. We were the only couple in the place at 9 pm on a Saturday, but that didn't stop us from throughly enjoying our dessert. Great spot overall! read more

One of my favourite restaurants in Toronto. I have been a patron of The Beacher Cafe since 2004. Brunch is very good and I tried them all, my favourite is the Smoked Salmon Scrambled Eggs and The Egg Benedict that comes with the famous Beacher Hollandaise sauce. But my first choice will always be the Chicken on a bum with fries I think I ordered this several times. The desserts ( from Dufftlet ) are amazing and my favourite is the chocolate mousse. They also have specials: I love the Penne with Shrimp in white whine garlic tomato sauce ( this is to die for) and the mushroom soup. Highly recommended ! read more

Food is very reasonable and they have a decent brunch selection...am going to try the french toast next time as a friend had this and it looked so good. Update - was back again!
