On Friday Oct 31 I bought two loaves of sourdough and a S. MARCOBRUNO sandwich. As always the bread was great. On the other hand the tuna sandwich was lacking any actual tuna. I didn't open the sandwich until I got back home where I realised there was no tuna whatsoever in the sandwich. I have had it before and normally it is very good, this one was not. It was a huge disappointment and a very disconcerting indication of a utter disregard for quality control and care on the part of the business. When your business charges $20 for a sandwich the least you should do is include the advertised ingredients. Will not be purchasing that again. read more

Stopped in for a quick lunch. The Mortadella Panini on their Focaccia was ok. The bread was a bit too oily making it really soggy. The Napoli and Margherita pizzas were good, nice dough and fresh toppings. The service was an issue, the lone server seemed very distracted with her phone and since the place was empty, it could've been a better experience. Not a memorable experience. read more

Fantastic! I'm surprised by how much I like it - I had the Bonatti de Bergamo, and it was delicious. I'll put Mattachioni in top 5 pizzas in Toronto - others (in no particular order) are Big Trouble Pizza, Descendent, Maker, and North of Brooklyn. Other reviews praised the tiramisu, but I thought it was just OK. But the focaccia - wow. Easily the softiest fluffiest that I've had - 100% get them. read more

One of the best sandwiches I've ever had. Simple and glorious. The little salad that came with it was arugula seeds, tomato and little fried onions which was a nice touch with the dressing on the side. This in house made bread is the absolute best bread ever. Bought 5 sandwiches today. Usually the orders are properly and generously and freshly made. Today, however, whoever made our sandwiches DID NOT do a good job. The sandwiches were literally slapped together; the porchetta sandwich was literally filled with pork fat. Hardly any meat - let alone pulled pork. The rest of the sandwiches were very oily and looked like a 4 year old put them together. The bread was perfect as usual. Mattachioni is not taking care of the Junction store for a while now, seeming to focus on the Leslieville store. It's a big shame. read more

This place is very close to my work, and I heard good things about this place from my colleague, so I decided to give it a try a couple weeks ago. I had one of their 'special' pizzas (Napoli) that you can get for $10 from Monday to Wednesday. I called in for a take out, and they told me that it would take only about 10 minutes to be prepared. I was skeptical as a lot of places take much more time than they tell you initially when you place an order over the phone. I got there anyways in 10 minutes. Decor of the place was very cute and cheerful, and I was surprised to learn that my pizza was already packed in a box. The staff I dealt was very nice and pleasant. When I opened the box at work, I was really happy to see that they didn't go cheap on the ingredients on top. Also, it was still super warm as it was fresh out of pizza oven, and mostly importantly, it smelled amazing. I was impressed by the fact that what I was tasting was only $10. If you enjoy eating fresh gourmet pizza, you definitely want to try this place! It's reasonably priced even without the Monday to Wednesday special, and mostly importantly, they know what they are doing. read more

I've had Mattachioni on my book mark list for a long time and finally got around to checking it out for lunch. I'm not sure where all the negative reviews below are coming from. I personally cannot get enough of this place! What keeps me coming back? Their burratta ($14 half order/$22 for a full order) - a wonderful soft hunk of oozy cheese atop a bed of assorted ripe tomatoes in a light coating of olive oil, sea salt and chopped basil! On the side, toasted garlic wedges of the house made sourdough. I've tried their Napoli pizza ($16) and Boccadasse ($19) - both really good. The crust is the perfect chewiness and tasted amazing dipped in the leftover sauce of the burrata. We also grabbed a bottle of red wine because it's pretty much mandatory with pizza this good! Service was lovely on both occasions that I visited. I plan to make Mattachioni one of my regular haunts! read more

Dave and the Mattachioni team are such gems and the wood-fired pizza here is top notch (and so well priced, especially their weekday specials)! Their sourdough is incredible, I believe they bake it in a wood fire oven so it has incredible flavour, but the texture is really my favourite part about it - so stretchy and soft! I've also had their sandwiches, mortedella was a bit greasy IMO but the caprese was out of this world delicious. Still need to try their pizzas :) read more

Rosso E Oro - the beet salad was truly golden! The combination of textures - small chunks of cooked beets, graced by crunchy almonds and delightfully light straciatella, was amazing! On a bed or arugula, a very winning combination! All of the salads look so delicious, I'll be back for sure. And I didn't realize that this is not "just" a restaurant - lots of Italian groceries are on offer, as well as a wide-range of wines. So many things to enjoy there, a real gem of a place! read more

Excellent pizza, but have yet to try the sourdough. The olives on the Napoli were super tasty, and there were just enough anchovies to give a salty kick. In authentic Italian style, served uncut. The sharp knives are very easy to use (for those who are surprised by the round pie). The negroni was good - but it's also a hard one to mess up. This place is the real deal. The salads are crazy fresh. The charcuterie are awesome with much of their meats cured in-house. The breads are all baked in a wood oven, purpose build by a master mason. Our second time to this place and walking distance. Pizza was awesome, service good...please though make sure the dishes are clean. All the glasses brought to us were dirty. Perhaps a new dishwasher...it is just off-putting a little. Also attention to cleanliness is something super simple that any resteraunt can pay attention too...not just the tables and dishes, window sills, floors and handles...doesn't cost much...just a little work and the result will be happy customers who come back. So one day I walk in to this place, because I can see it's changed up owners. Bread! Awesome. I buy half a loaf--for $5! What? I go home and eat it. It was amazing, but who wants to spend that much cash on Sourdough? Paris Bakery also sells amazing bread for like a 1/3rd the price. Anyway, I go back, and buy a whole loaf for $8. It's so fucking good. I've done this so many times now. Hey look. They have home made chilli oil--for like $7-8. That seems excessive. It tastes amazing, though. I am pretty addicted to it now. I've got three packs of the stuff in my fridge right now. It's so good. Anyway, i'm talking about the place like they are just a corner store. They make pizza and sandwiches as well. I haven't had a sandwich yet, but they look legit. The pizza's are great. They are up there with Queen Margarita & Libretto. If you like that sort of pizza you can't go wrong. We work in the neighbourhood and frequent this place. I'm disappointed almost every time and I may not be going back after today. The pizzas are tasty but burnt every time. They've also shrunk in size. They're tiny pizzas now, hardly enough for lunch - they don't even come close to filling the box like they used to. Today the entire rack of sourdough bread was black. I get that rustic Italian bread should be brown, even dark brown with a thick crust, but this was BLACK. This place has great intentions, great flavours and lots of fresh natural ingredients but quite poorly executed. Always like the food but today's service was just infuriating. Took 10 minutes to get seated, with a bunch of tables empty. A line formed behind us, needles to say everyone behind us feels the same, they've been waiting to order, get food longer. Took 30 minutes to get bread with olives. Took another 30 to get lasagne and 2 cold pizzas (take out ones take 10-15 minutes). Had to wrap it up because an hour wait was too draining on the kid. Just don't have high chair - your servers are not accommodating in any way anyways. I will still come for take out or for bread but this was our last time sitting in. read more

I don't like giving low scores but I've visited Mattachioni twice since moving to Dovercourt-Emerson and it has disappointed both times. Full disclosure, we ordered take out both times but service was cold each visit. Without boring you with details, the quality was average for a premium price. The portions are also tiny. Another local business that's boosting the area and not just any restaurant either! We came here for lunch on a Saturday and were welcomed by the friendly server and seated promptly. The restaurant is very rustic, exactly what one would expect from an authentic Italian restaurant. We couldn't focus on the menu with the heavenly sourdough loaves waiting to be purchased and focaccia so we told the waiter to place one of each on hold. We didn't want to chance it as people were flocking in and out! When we did order we settled on the margherita pizza and salmone panini. Wow, great flavours all across. The pizza was well done with a good chew on the crust and the salmone came on their rustic bread, so good! With a nice salad lightly dressed, overall a really good meal and the price was very good! Can't get enough. Loved the food, the service and the atmosphere. The porchetta panini seemed purposefully simple so, in every bite, one could appreciate the quality of the homemade ciabatta and the tenderness of the slow roasted pork. I was delighted by the crunch of the rind in my very first bite. It felt like, when you have the best bread and freshly roasted meat, why lose the focus on anything else? The mortadella panini was a complete suprise. I thought I loved focaccia before, but holy crow, now I know, I was missing out. I had no idea focaccia could be so soft and light. And although I'm not a mortadella fan (hubby is) I would order this panini a thousand times just to experience its smooth flavour and texture. The combination of fresh mozzarella with that amazing tomato focaccia made a simple sliced cold-cut meat into melt-in-your-mouth perfection. I can't wait to try the pizza. read more

This is first time I have felt humiliated by the person who works there. My friends and I went there to try Italian foods. As soon as we arrived there, waiter wasn't friendly. We wanted to sit by the window and his attitude was mean to us. The way he talks and mimics were rude and it is unfair. I definitely think that he judged us because of our belief. My family and I love this restaurant, it is truly a gem in our little neighbourhood. There is something for everyone on the menu, and everything is super fresh - the bulk of items being made on site. They serve fresh Italian pizzas, some really lovely and interesting salads, hearty homemade soups, and their sandwiches are the bomb (also a perfect hangover cure!) The service has always been great for me, my family and I visit with two small kids and they are always accommodating. A little secret is that they also make their own in house freshly baked sourdough daily, and it is better than a lot of the renowned bread in Toronto (definitely competes with Prairie Boy and Blackbird, trust me!) but no one knows about it and they don't really showcase it - and they should! For me, returning to a restaurant means it has succeeded in 3 key areas: quality, consistency and atmosphere, and Mattachioni has it all. The menu has lots of options that are fresh, flavourful, consistent and well priced and the restaurant has a warm and very casual feel that keeps me coming back; in fact we go every Sunday now. We came to try the sourdough as the reviews were good. Though it's a bit expensive, I realized why when I got there: they're big. We usually buy from De La Terre from the farmers markets, but in the winter, the Junction Market is gone. Ultimately, their sourdough is very good, and rivals De La Terre. Which is better? They're just different. De La Terre has the advantage of variety while Mattachioni is available regularly. Delightful surprises: 1. Sandwiches. We ended up taking some sandwiches to go, and man, some of the better sandwiches I've had in a long time. Because sandwiches are so often done poorly, I don't like sandwiches. I could keep coming back for these. The Caprese used Kumato tomatoes! 2. Speaking of the tomatoes, Mattachioni has a little market setup along with a fridge for those needing to top up on anything, along with their sauces, etc. From the looks of it, they use quality ingredients & produce that are fresh with vibrant colours. Last, but not least, the owner there was super nice. When I got there and had to make a call asking my wife what sandwiches she wanted, he offered me a glass of water, a table to sit, to enjoy and relax in the establishment. We had a good chat about the place and the food they have, and next time, I hope to try a pizza. read more
