The first day in New Zealand, waking up hungry, we walked to a local cafe recommended by our Airbnb host. A funky, artist-type retreat played host to a very memorable and tasty meal. Queenie's is a relaxed neighborhood cafe in the Freeman's Bay district, whose confines are brimming with creativity - from the Pixies playing over the speakers, to the beautiful Aotearoa (New Zealand in Maori) mural on the wall. My boyfriend ordered the Prawn Omelet, and what he let me sample of it was flavorful and exotic. The eggs were fluffy, and the prawns generous. The Turkish Eggs at Queenies were a trip around the world in its own right: 2 poached eggs atop baba ganoush, yogurt, hot chili butter, and toasted pide. I enjoyed slathering all of the rich flavors over my bread, pausing only momentarily to enjoy my perfectly brewed hot black - an espresso type coffee. My only complaint about the Turkish Eggs is that they could've used a spot of salt. The price was a bit much for two, but we were full most of the day. It was here we learned tipping is not customary in New Zealand. As we gave a tip to the cashier, she looked at us as if we had 3 heads. We loved this breakfast place! Tucked into the neighborhood and covered in green vines - it is a can't miss. My son wanted to rate it 3,000 stars. Both kids said they were the best blueberry pancakes they ever had. The plate was covered in fresh fruit and edible flower petals. The eggs Benedict and brisket were also fantastic. We had a flat white and Queenies rescue which were delightful. The flat white arrived with a gorgeous panda drawn into the foam. The waitstaff were very kind and attentive - service was perfect and quick. We would 10/10 return. Thanks to Queenies for a wonderful visit! read more

Tucked away in the backstreets of Ponsonby, Queenies Lunchroom has a wonderfully homely feel to it. Charmingly decorated with royal memorabilia, vintage porcelain and a paint by numbers wall mural, it is definitely one of the best spots to hit for brunch in Auckland. The menu frequently changes but it always offers way more than the usual including Turkish eggs with babaghanoush, yoghurt and chilli butter or Kedgeree -smoked fish, spiced rice, soft boiled egg and flat leaf pasley. On my last visit I tried the Haloumi with puy lentils, quinoa, butternut and herb and baby spinach salad. The serving was v.generous and the salad was fresh yet full of flavour. Also, I am not sure which haloumi they use but it is phenomenal. P.s. order a takeaway coffee on you way out - the cups are très cute. read more

I'm really big on the way a place looks and Queenies Lunch Room on Freeman's Bay is pretty with just the right amount of quirk. A corner spot covered in ivy with cool metal furniture outside it's a great place to sit in the sun with friends. I've now tried just about everything on the menu at Queenies and each time it's been fabulous food. Unfussy, generous fare with really fresh ingredients and great flavours. The fish kedgeree is one of the best i've tasted and it's the first time i've tried the Turkish eggs here too and they are TDF! The fish cakes are amazing and full of flavour - not to dry or salty as fish cakes can often be. I love the casual way the boiled eggs and soldiers come in an egg carton with mitey soldiers piled high! The staff are charismatic and personal and Queenie herself is often spotted having a cup of tea in the corner. I highly recommend this place as perfect for brunch or weekday lunches and a place to bring families or parents. read more

I've been to Queenie's a handful of times now - another local, however parking can be a nightmare depending on the time/day. My last visit I had the 'kedgeree' which always wins me over. It had the right amount of haddock, spiced rice and one perfectly cooked hard-boiled egg on the top; the yolk was soft and runny. Delish. Coffee is supreme in little vintage cups. Lots of current magazines on offer to read. Counter food is brioche, scones, muffins, cookies blah... I've also tried another favourite of many: Cassoulet (with chorizo, cannelloni beans, fried egg & toast), can't wait to sample the Turkish eggs next! These dishes are around $18 for a hearty lunch. Free wifi, just ask for the password. Friendly staff. Very popular spot for foodies! read more

Cute but mediocre. I had read great reviews of Queenies on other websites but was pretty disappointed. The service was slow and the server had zero personality - I could barely hear her talking despite the cafe being virtually empty. The tables inside are close together and impossible to get into without scraping past the salt shaker with your backside, not a comfortable experience for the unlucky people wedged in next to me (I'm really not that fat). It was a warm day so I paid extra and ordered an iced coffee instead of my usual flat white. Charging extra just for icecubes does not an iced coffee make. My sandwich came on dry, thick toasted bread. The only redeeming feature was the chutney. Needless to say I won't be returning. read more

I am not sure how we ended up here one morning, maybe it was the striking appearance of the building but the book sure lived up to it's cover. It's interior is alternative and invigorating, contributing to the overall experience, complementing the creativity of the menu. I ordered Moroccan eggs, something I had never heard of and the only word I recognised in the description was poached. They were delicious, cooked in some sort of tomato ragout, with great flavours - which Morocco is renowned for. We chose to sit outside as it was a sunny morning, at a miniature little table, almost feeling like we were in a storybook. Soon to be open for dinner, I am excited to see what Queenies has to offer. This is just the cutest little cafe in such a charming wee setting! Definitely a must try in Auckland :) A varied menu means there is something to appease most appetites and encourages you to try new things. The bacon and egg sammie is always a treat. It is with great sadness that I must say the Queenie's we once knew is no more. Our server didn't have great English (not a problem in itself), but after great hopes for an inspiring team breakfast at an old favourite, things started to fall apart. Nothing worse then ordering 2 flat whites and only getting one. Alas, the odd mistake should be forgiven, it's not the end of the world. It's only coffee, after all. After that, poached eggs and bacon seemed to be a little too much. Both my neighboring bacon eater and I were given poached eggs and bacon sans bacon. Bacon, a critical part to that combo. Once served it was ok, not bad, not great. But ok, as in not worth the wait. Here's the sad news. At the time I thought it was either trainee staff or bad day or bad luck or my own fault (I never really like to blame the servers, I've been known to mumble). I thought maybe, just maybe, there may even be new ownership. This has since been confirmed (unprompted). So there it is, only God can save the Queenies now. read more

Charming little tearoom style cafe in Freemans Bay. It's a block back from College Hill so you probably won't stumble across it. It's a great spot to go for brunch or lunch and now Queenie's is licenced to serve alcohol. The table service is efficient and friendly. read more

I thankfully get to go to this cafe with regularity because there are a number of businesses in the area that choose Queenie's for meetings. This retro lover pretty much died and went to heaven the first time I went there - paint-by-numbers wall murals, cute ceramics and toasters on the tables so you can toast your own bread to your liking! Some real care and love has been put into the aesthetic of this place - it is so camp and bright and pretty. The food is pretty decent too, and just as well presented as the rest of the place. If you can find a park amongst the winding, crammed roads of Freeman's Bay, Queenie's is a must-see. read more

Choice wee local. A cafe with personality and damn good food and coffee.

Such a little gem in this concrete jungle called Auckland. Their staff are the most funny and friendly I've ever met in a café. So informative and provide some fun suggestions for food and drink. Quirky is the word that comes to mind when you look around the décor of the café. It some what reminds me of an old school diner or truck stop (but not in a bad way). Such a retro fit out that is homely and welcoming. Great coffee here that is always consistent and hot. My advice if you can't find a car park, sneak one at New World just at the end of the street. One of my favourite memories of Queenies was picking up a friend from the airport who had just returned from living in London and was keen to go to a decent NZ cafe. We headed to Queenies, sat outside under the awning as it rained lightly, and my friend ate all the food, and drank all the coffee, and basically decided he would live in NZ again if he could go to places like this all the time. It was pretty grouse. I've never had a bad or even indifferent time here at Queenies: everyone is always friendly and helpful, and the food is super good. They have lots of options here you won't find on other places around the traps, and you can always just make up your own breakfast by mix and matching items. read more
