I come in peace. Perhaps it was an off night for Phil and the Gang considering all the other reviews on Yelp are in praise of the chef and his team. Whatever the cause, I was so disappointed with my whole experience at Phil's Kitchen. Maybe that's because my expectations were so high, or maybe it just wasn't that great? The pork starter was fairly bland and overcooked but at the same time, weirdly, over powered by the apricotness of the dish. It was OK. Meh. Forgettable which at least isn't a disaster. Moving on...to the main...it was very pretty to look at, that's for sure, but unfortunately it just wasn't well executed. It was duck with cherries, basically, with a small slice of dauphinoise (which was delicious)...some of the cherries were poached, some not, some were perhaps supposed to be pickled but were just too sharp with vinegar that gave your mouth a fright, and not in a good way. But the biggest issue was the duck just was not rendered down so that delicious fatty skin layer was flabby and chawey...*wahhhhh*. What was the icing on the cake (haha) was that when I dared say something to Phil his come back was that he had worked for number 5 and number 40 chefs in the world, and so he knew what he was doing. Well, Phil, dear man, regardless, that duck was chawey and there is no excuse for that! read more
