It started out weird. A young dark-haired woman sat us in the tightest corner, interior table. It was very uncomfortable. There were empty tables, at least half a dozen, and I was on the brink of asking when the man who watered us said "hey, wanna move to a better table"? OH THANK GOODNESS. After that, he made us feel looked after and treated us really well. We think there was some weirdness with the young woman as she tried to muscle another couple trying to get sat. Anyways, moving on! I ordered the Turkish Cilbir Eggs and my partner ordered Eggs Benedict with bacon. For coffee, we ordered an Americano and a flat white. Everything was delicious. Vulcan Lane was quiet, but this is mid-January so we expected everything to be quiet. The great waiter and great food ended our experience on a high note. read more

What a cute breakfast spot! We wandered down Vulcan Lane and came upon this cafe with outdoor seating. The inside was pretty small and busy so we opted for the outside tables. We ordered a delicious salmon Benedict served on a house made hash cake with a side of bacon. Ask for crispy if you prefer it that way! Very good service with very good food and coffee. This is a more of a coffee cafe style of establishment, with a small inside eating area, or outside alley seating area. I believe there was a take out area as well. The price was reasonable given the quality of food and coffee. Cute and friendly little cafe. Simple dishes but very well done. During our visit, we visited this gem twice and everytime, I enjoyed their Oatmeal which truly was delicious: the addition of pear was a perfect addition along with fresh berries. If this Oatmeal is given 4 stars, Starbucks' oatmeal would be negative 60. The cappuccino was done right. Located in the heart of the tourist region yet slightly hidden on a lane way, you will find Cafe Melba. My husband and I happened upon this establishment, famished after yoga. It is certainly popular! The reatauarant is in a historic building with a lovely ceiling. There are approximately 10-12 tables for 2-4 people. Some of the seats are a tight squeeze. Many tourists frequent Cafe Melba on their way to or from the airport, as was evidenced by patrons with luggage. While it's a bit pricey, the food is so fantastic. I didn't think that beetroot and avocado toast with corn would go together, but I was wrong! It's a fine balance between sweet and savory that makes Smash (avocado toast) stand out. It was presented very nicely. The granola was equally as dynamic in flavor. You really can't miss! The coffee is nice and strong and served with coffee art. It's absolutely worth a visit! read more

I enjoyed a delicious lunch here - a Honey Garlic Chicken Salad. It was colourful, fresh, generous and delicious. The garlic is not too strong either. Service is great - although it was busy, I got a table quickly and the server was so friendly. An added bonus is the free sparkling water served when I sat down at my table, rather than tap water. She came quickly to take my order and gave me great advice about menu options. The salad arrived promptly and I enjoyed it. There was a good amount of chicken, lots of greens, cashews and salad vegetables. I enjoyed seeing the radish garnish on top too. It was quite busy as they have sold coupons online too. My choice was the Moroccan spicy chicken burger (19.5) which did not have any sort of Moroccan seasoning to it. The chicken was so stuffy that I could not cut with my knife. I asked for a better knife but the second one didn't work as well. I gave up... The whole thing was quite plain I thought - I can make a better one myself. My partner had the Melba Grill (19.5), which was equivalent to a big breakfast. This was quite average too. Maybe because I'm not a big fan of traditional breakfast style. Coffee was okay but we were feeling very hot because of the heater on top of us. The waitress said that they cannot turn it off as it was controlling the whole cafe. Yep, we walked out all sweaty which wasn't a great feeling on Saturday noon. read more

This is a cosy cafe on Vulcan Lane, one of the busy street in Auckland CBD. I had lunch there today with my gf. I have to say the food was only so-so. The paperbaked fish has a very different presentation but the taste is quite bland. The beef burger which my friend has looks okay and taste not bad. I didnt have a coffee there today so I guess next time I will go back for their coffee and cake. :) Not a bad place to have a catch up with friends in CBD during your lunch hour though. read more

This cute little cafe is located in the High street end of Vulcan lane, which is a bit more quiet than the end closer to Queen street. I was imagining a tourist trap (I don't know why... Aaaah prejudices!) but the food and patrons proved me wrong. The drinks menu is basic, there are hot drinks and a selection of cold drinks but no fresh juice or smoothie. A bit disappointing. However I was not disappointed by the food or service. Service was not extremely friendly but was efficient and the food was very well presented (see photo). I ordered my brunch menu favourite, eggs Benedict, that can come with a choice of bacon, smoked salmon or bacon. My eggs were slightly undercooked with some of the white still quite runny, and I felt there was not enough bread (English muffin) to soak up the egg yolk and Hollandaise sauce. The serving of smoked salmon was generous so I was able to enjoy it with every bite. There is also a small selection of baked goodies like blueberry muffins and almond croissants, and some cakes. I like the fact that they try to use organic and free range produce on their menu. For the quality, I felt the menu was well priced. All in all, Cafe Melba is a good cafe in a great location and I will probably be back should the occasion come up! Hopefully by then they will have extended their drinks menu a little bit ;-) read more

Just got into Auckland and had a fantastic breakfast at Melba's. My wife had the granola and I had the "SEB" which is scrambled eggs with bacon on a bagel. Wow, so good. So was the granola - hand mixed grains and fresh fruit with milk and yogurt. This has just become my favorite breakfast spot in Auckland. But they do lunch too. May have to come back for that. BTW, the orange juice is freshly squeezed with lots of pulp, and they use boidegradable straws. Atmosphere on Vulcan street is cozy and service impeccable. read more

Alleyway restaurants are probably one of my favorite places to dine. You get that little taste of Europe no matter where you are in the world. We stumbled upon this little gem on a cold and dreary day, and their lattes warmed my soul in an instant. It was perfectly frothy and artfully displayed. I also ordered the SEB (scrambled eggs, manuka smoked bacon and sundried tomato pesto on a toasted bagel), which fueled my energy for another day of exploring the CBD. It's a quaint little coffee shop. Not too busy. Away from all the hustle and bustle of Queen Street. If I lived in the area, I could totally see myself being a regular here. Laptop out. Glasses on. Pounding away on my keyboard. Or I'd cozy up with a nice book and a cup of joe. Great service. Nice ambience. Convenient location. Win! read more

Today Cafe Melba on Vulcan Lane provided me with a very tasty coffee for an afternoon refresher whilst I roamed the Auckland CBD for art galleries. Coffee was great, (although probably not strong enough for most coffee connoisseurs), service was attentive and the surrounds were perfect. Inside was a little cramped for me on this warm Autumn's day, however it did look snug and I liked the original artwork on the wall. This cafe called for alfresco coffee for me, for the fresh air and especially for the ambience of the surrounds - the narrow street and beautiful ornate architecture along Vulcan Lane transported me back to a visit to Seville in Spain last year. Had breakfast this morning with my sister. It is a nice quaint cafe with good coffee and breakfast was delicious. Waitstaff was polite and informative. I had the corned beef hash and was advised that it was not fried which was fine by me. It was more like a seared/grilled mash served with lightly dressed greens and hollandaise over a poached egg. Sister had the smoked salmon mash. I had a bite and it was quite good. Will probably stop by again during my visit to NZ and try another dish. Cheers. read more

This is one of my favourite spots in the cbd it's so understated. I love that their not trying to compete with the new cafés popping up. If your a fan of herbal tea like I an you must try their fruits of eden tea, so yummy and perfect heading into another cold winter. This is a very upmarket looking cafe it sells anything from coffee and breakfast to a glass of wine and a steak burger. The staff are very friendly and the pries are a bit high but the overall experience was good and the food was lovely. The waiting time is fair as you wait only about 10 minutes for your food. read more
