Just a few blocks from St. Patrick's Cathedral, you'll find another Auckland sanctuary. Federal & Wolfe is not just another cleverly hip "&" name like many that have sprung up over the years, but the street names of the actual intersection where this cafe/brunch haven is located. Thus even removed as it is from the main streets, you have little reason to get lost. Seat yourself and one of the staff will quickly present you with a cheery greeting and a menu, or walk up to the counter for takeaway. A lot of the charm comes from the diversity in customers and decor, which ranges from colorful benches and picnic tables, to low window seats, to repurposed giant menu boards. It was a calm weekday afternoon when I went, but seating was still 75% filled with various groups of friends, suited business partners, and the lone diners like myself. I felt completely at home being alone here, but I do wish I had the extra company if only to have an excuse to try multiple dishes! It took the better part of 10 minutes to scan through the menu and finally settle on a Chai Latte and Dukkah Eggs. I waited and contemplated my decision as I watched neighbors scarfing down Smashed Avocado Toast and leaving no trace behind. As big as the plates are, I can imagine leftovers are scarce. I too fell victim to this pattern as I wolfed (heh) down my meal of (slightly overcooked) poached eggs over chorizo, greens, feta spread, and sourdough toast. Well-seasoned, balanced, and not heavy as some brunches back in the States usually make me feel. You'd do well to take a moment to appreciate how carefully the kitchen presents each drink and dish though - inspire insta-FOMO among your friends! Lastly, I'd like to hazard a guess that part of the job requirements for working here are to be a veritable ray of sunshine. I don't know how much effort goes into prepping food and service this good consistently, every day, but it's a wonder the staff members kept greeting each customer with a smile and some wit, and I kid you not, literal pep in their step. Our first meal in Auckland and it was the perfect spot to start the vacation. The space is large, bright, and breezy with the open air lack-of-windows when the weather is good. It's a mixed use space where you can come here for brunch which is excellent or have a coffee and snack while you get some work done. We both ordered eggs benny. One was a smoked salmon one while the other was the more classic style with lashings of bacon. They were both delicious with perfectly poached eggs that provided the yolky thick sauce along with the hollandaise to make it rich and creamy. The bread was thick cut and toasted well to hold up against the weight of the sauce and protein stacked on top. We really felt energized and less jet-lagged after taking our time to enjoy the meal along with a cup of New Zealand organic tea. Super cute little cafe in the heart of Auckland, very close to the sky tower. I was looking for a cafe to have some breakfast at and get some work done. I stumbled upon Federal & Wolfe and they had a great menu, and I decided to go with their Dukkah Eggs which is a fan favourite! Included poached eggs, dukkah, free range bacon, rocket, a balsamic reduction and on a bed of sourdough toast! Accompanied by one of their fresh pressed juices called "the zinger" which had apple, pear, ginger and lemon. It was so refreshing and the colour was a pretty lime green. Got here around 1pm (they closed at 3pm today) and it seemed like they were "out" of half their menu options. Disappointing considering we all wanted something that wasn't available. A perennial breakfast favorite for Auckland CBD area. Never ever disappoints and plenty of creative options to choose from. Service is always friendly and helpful, if you're in Auckland, please do go by and start a our day right. I've visited this place every time I'm in town, which is about a dozen or so times now. Been to numerous other places but still find myself coming back here. The quality is just consistent and good every single time. So, pretty much everything on the menu is absolutely wonderful. Favorites must be the avocado on toast, not your run of the mill basic ago toast, but a wonderful souped up version with plenty of herbs on thick sliced toast and a balsamic vinaigrette that will put all other avo toasts to shame. The other must try is the mushroom medley on toast. Really rich and wonderful, umami everything. Don't forget to add a poached egg! Their house made Manuka smoked salmon is a lovely addition to their zucchini fritters. Plenty of options for vegans and vegetarians but if you need more protein they have great bacon and other meat dishes and sandwiches too. Really nice place to grab breakfast. We went there on a Wednesday around 7:45 am got a seat next to the big window and enjoyed the breeze. This place became somewhat crowded around 8:50am when we left. We went for the granola to share which was ok. I tried the halloumi poached egg which was good. The bread was a bit hard though and we thought it would be better if they had each egg on a different bread rather than covering only one bread and stacking the other bread below it. I stopped here for my first meal in New Zealand, and ugh. It was good. It reminded me quite a bit of hipster San Francisco with it's woodsy modern ambiance and graffiti style writing. The breakfast choices are quite filling and high quality at a slightly high, but reasonable price. I was ravenous from our flight in, and got the Smoked Fish Kedgeree. I admired the lovely bright orange-yellow egg (eggs in America are a depressing mild yellow variety) and took in the scent of the herbed rice. Yes, I knew it was going to be a fantastic trip. Sadly, I was only in for coffee (Kokako, my fave) but the muffins and other baked goods looked pretty delicious and the breakfast menu was very appetising. I brought my team back a day later (we were in the city for conference) and converted them all - nothing is better than a decent cup of coffee when you're otherwise stuck with the giant vats of car grease that you get function venues - so that several of them were back again on Day Three! The vibe is very relaxed and welcoming, with none of the pretension you might expect either from a cafe in the business district or space that's primarily organic with graffiti menus on the walls. I'll have to make an effort to get into the city on a Saturday for breakfast so I can try out their food, but next time I've got a morning meeting in town I'll be sure to stop here. read more

While spots like Federal and Depot have set an exceptionally high bar for food in the city, Federal & Wolfe meets that bar with a funky fresh menu that's executed fantastically in a cool atmosphere. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Abundant seating in a quaint corner cafe makes for a great atmosphere at Federal & Wolfe when combined with their fast and friendly service. Small talk is abundant if you want it, and you can tell that the servers and staff all genuinely like each other, which is unfortunately rare these days. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? My pictured order of 'Dukkah Eggs' came to $18.50, which was reasonable given both the portion size and the quality that I'll touch on in just a moment. The rest of the menu was priced accordingly with nothing coming out to be unreasonable. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? I honestly didn't know what to expect from the Dukkah Eggs, which were labeled on the menu as such: BBQ Chorizo, Rocket, Feta, Sourdough, Poached Eggs & Egyptian Dukkah Spice's & Nuts. Goodness me... what? I'm a big time foodie as you can probably guess, and while I'd experienced Dukkah before in North Africa I couldn't for the life of me figure out how it would blend with a breakfast dish consisting of barbecue chorizo no less. Turns out? It was absolutely out of this world. The chorizo was brilliant, and went perfectly with the poached eggs and the fantastically flavorful sourdough bread. The drippings of olive oil? Perfect, and complimented by the rocket (see: Arugula as well call it stateside). This dish was damn near perfect. Dual Stars Granted. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? Picking a breakfast spot out of the countless wonderful options in Auckland is an increasingly difficult selection process, but Federal & Wolfe matches the very high bar that's been set. Great spot in a rather average part of town, F&W is all about organic, sustainable and locally sourced. Not to be missed are their smoothies and juices, which come chilled in large glass jars. It has the most delicious honey mustard dressing and lots of vege (carrots, zuchinni) - the perfect lunch for those wanting to power through and arfternoon of work without feeling like a post-lunch siesta. Of course you know the coffee will be good, this place is owned by the people who bought us Kokako, so that is the coffee you get. The food likewise as with Kokako tastes great and is good for you. Fresh, whole ingredients, the food is kept quite simple but the tastes great still. There are a lot of options for vegetarians and vegans here too. The first time I came I asked the girl about the food and she was so helpful. Informed me of what was vegan suitable and ran off to the kitchen several times to question the guy back there. We had lightly toasted sourdough and conserves with coffee, both of which was very good. Nothing better than a lazy Saturday breakfast, especially one you do not have to make yourself. If you have a heavier appetite and like spice, try the Smoked Fish Kedgeree - Fragrant basmati rice, smoked fish, poached eggs, lemon and fresh herbs. I've been during a busy weekday lunchtime and this cafe had a great buzz. I had a delicious bruschetta - piled with heaps of tomatoes and basil (but very garlicy!!) and an excellent flat white. Being Americans we are not use to fresh eggs and the bright yellow color was very different to what we eat in the USA. (unless you go to a farmers market and buy fresh eggs) Coffee was excellent. In NZ they love coffee and don't know how to make a bad cup. Everything is fresh ground and never filtered. I drink it black but Beth had her Latte and said it was better than Starbucks, and she is a big fan of Starbucks. Pros and cons. The place opens early and accommodates around 20 ppl give or take a few. There's one waiter when we went in early in the morning. We were the only couple there which was surprising because the food was pretty good. Healthy I would say in comparison to American food we usually eat back home in restaurants. They don't use processed ingredients as u can taste the organic blends of their dishes. I had the Flat white coffee, dukkah eggs with chorizo while my other half had the Eggs florentine. We finished everything of course and even tipped when it wasn't a custom to tip. Nothing was too salty or over cooked or undercooked. The flat white, which is an Australian drink was ok but the amount of expresso in it made me more awake. What we loved about the place was that the waiter was friendly and tended to our needs, the place itself was nice inside and clean. I went in this week for breakfast and was impressed. Definitely catering for the corporate crowd, this edgy little spot had a steady stream of clients for the hour that my breakfast date lasted. First impression was that someone had really thought about the decor and got it right. Lots of rough cut wood and stenciled signage, hints of rock music permeating from the kitchen, mix and match chairs, menus written on tables, juice served in big jam jars, water in old bottles. I felt pretty cool with this crowd. While on decor, the window across the front of the cafe opens right up, and a pleasant breeze was flowing through on this warm morning. The service was great, and coffee kept coming if required, as did fresh water. I ate Eggs Florentine, and I was completely happy. The hollandaise sauce was yummy and lemony and the eggs were perfect. My friend had omelet with a side of bacon,and that was very good too. So I am not sure if breakfast is the best judge of the whole menu but it's a good start, I will be back to try lunch. Ethical sourcing from local producers is the focal point of this brunch hotspot - as it should be - and you'll be able to see exactly which local farms your dish has come from.
