    This place is funky!
    Tempest W.

Lovely place, with fantastic staff. I am not a big eater, and was happily accommodated with a single poached egg, toast, bacon and hollandaise to form an Eggs Benedict (The menu has THREE eggs, and a ton of bacon) Really? Who are they feeding? Sumo wrestlers? Very, very good salty bacon, cooked to perfection. Poached egg was soft and dreamy. I ended up mopping it all up with toast, and adding more hollandaise, feeling like a right little miss piggie! It's quirky, kind of God knows what decor. Huge load of amazing looking cakes and slices, and I am betting that they are all made on the premises. Coffee was good, if a tad foamy on the capuchino. Having read Emmanuel B's review, I think that they are well shot of him. If you are going to review, be fair. It has my vote, and we are even likely to go back even though our time here is limited. 10 days is not at all enough time to eat your way around Auckland! Oh, and the mural has a pokemon ball spin thing too, if you are into it.

The décor is kitschy but not unpleasant, and there is a large variety of food and cakes to select from. I was kept waiting at the counter without being acknowledged for a few minutes (a pet hate) but other than that the staff were friendly. I ordered the Cezanne Mess as it was different from the standard breakfast fare. Whilst I did enjoy it, I found chunks of avocado there which weren't mentioned on the menu, and the tomatoes were raw. Bread was tasty though. Perhaps I caught them on an off day, I'd definitely say to try them if you want a slightly different cafe experience.

I have been coming to Café Cezanne for over six years now. Mainly because it's one of the only cafes around Ponsonby that's open at night. My friends and I have spent countless evenings talking life, and other not so important things (haha) in this cafe. Their coffee is pretty decent, although nothing too special. And they do great cakes and I love their squid salad. The décor could probably use a little bit of a spruce up, but this has never deterred us from going there. Especially when not much else is open and some serious girl time is needed.

I grab something to eat at Cafe Cezanne quite often because it's right up the road from my work. There are always a few people languidly noodling at their meal or listlessly blowing on their coffee outside. Sometimes on of them has a dog. One of the striking things for me about the culinary experience at Cafe Cezanne, is the wealth of their portions. Everything is so big and dense there. You'd never accuse them of trying to short change you. I think that's probably a good thing. I mean, people like lots of a thing, right? I'd highly recommend grabbing one of the pre-prepared desserts they have in their cabinet. The raspberry cheesecake is friggen insane. Sure, you feel so very close to death while you're eating it (via girth and depth of the damn thing), but it's well worth it.

I love the atmosphere and decor of Cafe Cezanne. With angel-type figures painted on the walls, everything in Cafe Cezanne is multicoloured and vibrant and radiates friendliness. The atmosphere is always very funky yet remains a causal, relaxed place to sit and enjoy a coffee, smoothie or some great food. Their cabinet food always looks fresh and scrummy - I've had one of their chickpea salads and it was delight. Not too much sauce, and plenty of veges tossed through it, it was a great lunch, felt healthy and was very reasonably priced. I've also enjoyed their big breakfasts and smoothies over the years and can say without any hesitation that any meal you choose from cafe Cezanne will fill you with pleasure! Portion sizes are all very generous too, so you always feel like you're getting your money's worth - a huge bonus. The murals, brick counter, wooden furniture, chalk, casually dressed staff and delicious menu mean there really isn't any reason not to stop by Cafe Cezanne next time you're in Three Lamps shopping mall!

    My impression of a diet

This quirky long term resident of Ponsonby Road with it's mural lined wall is rarely empty and open late into the evening. It's rustic and generous mix of breakfast and lunch meals forms an impressionist palate of culinary fare, but features mostly works of the previous century (think french toast , pancakes, Mexican breakfast, eggs Benedict and salads). There is nothing modern or pretentious about Cafe Cezanne. Just honest traditional goodness from the bosom of its caring owners served to a colorful and appreciative crowd. If the fancy pants of Dizengoff are not to your taste, then this may be the place for you.

Had some time to kill so stopped in here for a coffee as I walked through ponsonby. Just had a cappunicco but it was an absolutely fabulous coffee. Will definitely be back and am definitely keen to try the food very soon too! The cabinet food looks deeeelicious!

I came on a Sunday morning (expected it to be busy, which it was) with my boyfriend. We got a little two person table and scoured the menu. I had read online that they have vegan options. They are well known for their shakes, which look 1000% amazing and I really wanted one (legit the reason we came here). But when I asked the server, she said there were no vegan options for the shakes - the only vegan option on the menu was the acai bowl. I love a good healthy vegan option, but when you go somewhere hoping for a shake and come out with an expensive and moderate acai bowl, it's a tad bit disappointing. The server was really nice and the place n is cute, but they seemed completely understaffed. There was like one server for the entire restaurant. I ordered the acai bowl and my boyfriend ordered the avo toast. We had to ask someone if we could order after waiting for like 15 mins and then we waited another 25 mins for our food to come out. I try to be understanding when it's busy as I've worked in restaurants but it seems like they definitely need to hire more people. I'm hoping I just came on an unfortunately understaffed day. I wish they would offer vegan shakes. When they do, I'll be back!

I got one of their egg sandwiches, which I didn't realize would be so big. It was decent tasting, but a bit too much for me. Instead, the bf and I came here primarily to partake in one of their ridiculous milkshake. Yes, a milkshake for breakfast. Looks like a lot of the other patrons, most notably the younger crowds, were here for that same reason. We opted for their strawberry diva, which was a 1.5 foot tall monstrosity of decadence and sin. It had white chocolate bits, strawberry jam, sprinkles, thick strands of cotton candy floss, whipped cream, a stick of rock candy, along with the requisite strawberry ice cream that made up the milkshake. Just a messy, sticky treat, and it tasted like pure sugary sweetness. Not sure if other places in Auckland have things like this, but if you happen to have a hankering for sweets that only a very tall milkshake would fulfill, this would be a pretty safe bet for you to try out.

We first came here when one of our Sunday brunch group Paul, had spotted the place as new in the hood and suggested we try it. Back then we were completely ignorant about paleo food and... well... let's just say Kerry was VERY unimpressed. "What's this sh*t?" I think came out of his mouth when the food arrived. He was so unhappy and grumbled through the whole brunch and Paul was subsequently banned from suggesting new places. Flash forward a few months, my partner Ryan and I decided to try the Paleo Diet. Going Paleo diet can seriously hinder your eating out choices but not at this place! We've been there many times since, it's a once a week thing for us so far only for breakfast but we're keen to try the lunch as the menu looks great. My standard breakfast is always either the Eggs Benedict or Cocoa Banana Pancakes with Pear Syrup, Whipped Coconut Cream and Berry Dust. It's quite an intriguing start to the day. The Eggs Benedict comes with spinach leaves and a dairy free hollandaise - they use coconut oil - and the whole thing is served on almond meal bread. The other morning we were graced with the unexpected presence of Ms Pam Corkery and her Dancing with the Stars partner Matt. Both were surprisingly chipper given the fact that they'd placed bottom that week. Pam and Matt both tucked in to a salmon breakfast and were wowed by it. The owner told them that their salmon is caught, delivered and on the plate within 24 hours. I'm no salmon fan but it did look great! From the counter try the Double Chocolate Hazelnut Cookie which I'm missing as I write this and when I finish will go get one... The Paleo Fruit Muffin is also good. The staff are friendly and seem happy to be there.

Knowing where you're food comes from and how it's processed I think is important and these guys do their best to make everything in house and source local top quality ingredients. Mum and I popped in for brekkie on the weekend. The menu is short and feat. all the standard offerings - bacon & eggs, pancakes, muesli, eggs benny - as well as an array of baked cabinet goodies. I settled on eggs (poached) w salmon. The eggs were cooked perfectly but the salmon was far too smokey. It almost had a chemical taste to it. I adore salmon but one mouthful was all I could manage. The bread also was a bit of a let down. It had no substance and just sort of dissolved in your mouth. I prefer a grainy, seeded bread w my eggs or sourdough but that's just me. I would happily pop back for coffee (Millers) but I don't think I'll be adding it to my list of regular brunch spots just yet.

Our server was super sweet and attentive until we placed our orders. We never saw her again, no mention she was leaving for the day (I could see her inside on her cell phone and changed with a backpack). Our food was delivered and the other server didn't seem to notice (or care) that our water glasses were empty, as I found out that she too were on her way out of work. We didn't get water refills until the check came, in which is was a third server and then it took probably 2mins for her to run our card because she was busy setting tables and chatting with coworkers. The food here was amazing and filling- large portions, but the Mac n cheese was disappointing. I would give this 4 stars, but due to the fact that the servers are more interested in going home and chatting with coworkers than taking care of their guests (at one point we were the only table in the whole place and still couldn't get a water refill), this place is getting only 2 stars. It's got potential if it gets new staff.
