Whenever possible I try to support local businesses, especially family-owned businesses. As I was…read morein need of a custom door, I decided to skip the "big box" retailers and give my business, albeit small, to a local company. I chose Advanced Door Company in Chico after reading their charming story online. I had a few questions and, of course, needed a price quote. So I stopped by the shop and was a handed a business card and instructed to fill out and return a form for a price quote. No problem. But filling out the form raised a few questions, so I called the number on the business card. It took two voicemails and a text over a one week period to finally get a response from someone. In return, I received a text which contained an apology with a promise to call me that afternoon or the next day at the latest. Again, no problem. I waited patiently. "They must be very busy," I told myself. Another week passed. That promised "next day" call never happened. So I texted again. Long story short: no "live" phone call, but a series of back-and-forth texts trying to get my basic questions answered. (I even provided photos with dimensions to be clear.) During these exchanges I received only partial answers. What I did receive was mostly excuses (my kid is graduating...Monday was a holiday...we are swamped...with all that is happening globally...I'll check with my boss). And, finally, the real kicker was, "You may want to order without waiting for a price." Really? Order with incomplete information and with a BLANK CHECK? Still determined to give this company my business, (I know, I am either very patient or just stupid), I even resorted to begging: "please don't forget about me," I pleaded. As of yesterday, June 14, 2021, a full two weeks having passed, I threw in the towel and purchased a door from an out-of-town company where I was treated promptly and professionally. I had all my questions answered and order placed within 30 minutes! Unbelievable! So much time wasted with Advanced Door and their deplorable, amateurish customer service! Over the past two decades, my experience doing business with local companies, especially restaurants and retail "mom and pop" stores, tends to be a challenge when compared with the chains. Generally speaking, I have found chains to be more consistent in quality, tend to hire and train more qualified employees, while providing a more acceptable level of customer service. Still, I will always try to give my neighbors the first opportunity for my business before patronizing chains. I am very sorry to say Advanced Door is just another example in my continuing disappointment with local companies. There. You've been warned.

I've hated my interior doors since moving in but never got around to looking for replacement…read moreoptions. For context, my existing doors were the original 1993 hollow-core slabs--plain, dated, and not doing the house any favors. I first asked a local contractor for his take. While he said he could handle it, he suggested going with a company that specializes exclusively in doors. Not long after, my social media feed started serving up options, and I ultimately chose **One Day Doors & Closets of Sacramento** for an initial consultation. The process was straightforward from start to finish. A representative came out within a week to take preliminary measurements, then invited me to their Rocklin showroom to review styles and finishes in person. I selected a three-panel design and a color that closely matched my existing palette. About a week later, an installer returned to take precise measurements of each opening. They custom-cut each door to fit the existing frames and hinge locations. A few weeks after that, installation day arrived--and within a few hours, everything was complete. They also upgraded the hinges to brushed nickel to match my existing hardware. The difference is substantial. The new doors are solid, noticeably quieter, and significantly more attractive. Overall, a very positive experience from consultation through installation.

My closet doors are installed, but I wish they weren't. My wife and I were promised custom closet…read moredoors with 3D laser measurement. When the installer arrived to take the measurements, he pulled out a tape measure. Confused, we followed up with Monika and were told that the 3D technology is only used for customers with swing doors. My contract specifically said that laser measurement was included, but that wasn't delivered. Install day: - 1 door was painted the wrong color and had to be sent back - The 3 other closet doors were hung crooked - The installer damaged my floors by screwing in guides rather than using the adhesive option we were promised and left gashes in the flooring when bringing the doors in - A 4.5" unfinished trim board (which Monika never discussed with us) was installed across the top of the closets When my wife asked the installer about these concerns, he blamed Monika for not communicating with him better. While he did apologize for the door being the wrong color, he tried to convince my wife that screwing the guides into the subfloor was the optimal approach and that our flooring contactor had lied to us when they suggested not to screw into a floating floor, but he agreed to come back the next day with adhesive to fix his mistake. After sending an email to Monika documenting these problems, she offered to reduce our remaining balance and promised to send the installer back "until we were happy." Install day 2: - I called to check in on the progress and my wife let me speak with the installer. He skirted the issue of the crooked doors by blaming the existing closet framing. I acknowledged that my house isn't perfectly square and achieving perfection wasn't possible but I asked him to get it as close as he could. He responded, "I can see you're going to be meticulous about this so I can just leave the guide with the tape and you can do it yourself" - which felt like a complete lack of professionalism - The adhesive tape is clearly visible under the guides to cover the screw holes in my flooring that went unpatched - The doors are still not level with visible gapping - Sawdust kept forming as the doors were opened and closed because they drilled the door pull holes all the way through and forgot to put hardware on the interior holes. Hardware had to be delivered the next day to fix this issue. There was nothing that felt "custom" about this experience and it definitely wasn't a "one day" project. Monika made apologies, but that doesn't change the lack of quality in the doors, the misleading website claims, or the exhausting install issues.
