I go to Asian bakeries for one thing, and one thing only... The BBQ pork bun or the occasional custard tart. I've had them in China and at countless china towns in Chicago, Sacramento, New York and Toronto to say I know a thing or two about my childhood favorite. This place is great, a little better than Tai Pan Bakery but not as good a Hippo Bakery (albeit Hippo has Japanese-style goods). What people really need to keep in mind is that this place serves great Chinese style pasties, desserts, and bubble tea. Maybe when compared to New York's Chinatown, or Shanghai this place is sub-par but it is deserving of 4 stars when considering these type of desserts are almost entirely unheard of by the non-Asian public. To review or not to review... that is the question... After quite a long hiatus from writing reviews here on YELP! I decided to "mark my return" with a review for QQ Cafe and Bakery. It is in the SW corner of 13 Mile and John R. Road and could be easily miss sans its neighbors. The area reminds me so much of your stereotypical strip mall in Asia -- crowded parking lot and, if you are lucky, the unmistakable smell of authentic Asian food. To call QQ a "cafe" is quite stretching it seeing as there are only two, nay THREE tables at best inside the establishment. Each one can BARELY contain one person eating let alone two though my guess is each of those tables ARE meant for two people to share. BUT where QQ lacks in space it most definitely make up on the flavor of their food. As a creature of habit, I always, ALWAYS come in to get a pair of their ham and scallion roll -- YUMMY! EVERY roll in this store shares the same moistness that an Asian "bread" OUGHT to be. I tried the "cakes" once and it DEFINITELY tasted like the ones made from back East. Honestly? Should I decide to sit down and eat at one of their small tables, I don't think I can fit ALL of my order on there let alone share it with another person. So... can I just say how much I love this place? We arrived almost at closing time and there was still a line of the door! Awesome Asian bakery and the people who are working there we're just wonderful. We had so many different kinds of baked goods and all of them work great from the cakes to the bread. when we walked in we didn't realize that it was cash only and only had credit. They were so kind to us and told us that next time we came in we could just pay them back and we got to still take whatever we wanted! Still love this place for boba. I come here weekly and have helped many, many friends see the light/fall in love with this place, too. FYI, they close for about a month each year and go on vacation. This is the place I go for Chinese bakery. Now, I haven't visited many asian bakeries to compare, but I do know what I like. And let me tell you, I could eat Coconut Custard buns for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I don't only 'cause I would love to never suffer from diabetes. Their red bean buns are super delish too. (filled with a sweet bean paste) And let's not forget the BUBBLE TEA! While it's simply made with a powder mix (not freshly brewed like Bubble Island) it's still super yum. I always get a cold milk tea with bubbles. A few warnings: - Cash only! - Beware of parking! This is a small mom-and-pop bakery. The breads and desserts are yummy but what I do love is their cake! Chinese cakes are more whipped and less sugary than American cakes and I especially love all the fruit between the layers. I tried their watermelon slushie and although it was good, it wasn't spectacular. I will still get one the next time I am there though. It is extremely hard to find good boba in michigan. Try the cake desserts if you haven't already, trust me, it is fantastic if you love fruits and yummy whipped cream frosting. I don't recall them accepting credit cards though so bring cash with you! read more

I used to like the baked BBQ buns at Kam Man Foods in East Hanover NJ more. But after my last trip east, I've changed my mind and find QQ Bakery's Cha Siu Bao are actually far better. QQ's buns have more meat, no fat, and the bread is not so squishy. Also, they are $.25 less each and actually a little bigger than Kam Man Foods. I would say on a par with Dynatang Bakery, in Scarborough, Toronto. The huge almond cookies are excellent too and a bargain. read more

Tapioca bubbles have definitely improved since my last visit. Once again, I do not recommend getting their milk teas...stick with the smoothies only. The summer smoothie is probably my personal favorite here (it's strawberry flavored!) My personal favorite buns is the coconut raisin bun. Really big and cheap!!! Again, this is in the context of Michigan. This is probably the best boba I've had in the area. Although it is powder-based, the powders are most reminiscent of the flavor it represents. I got taro the two times I went, so I'm unsure if the other flavors available accomplish this. It's cash only, but at $2.75 a drink, that's a steal for the area! Goldfish tea in Royal Oak is about 5, and I believe Blossom Cafe in Rochester is about $3.50. I also appreciate the sealed top cup - it's how most boba places serve the drink! Goldfish tea and Blossom Cafe don't stay true to this. All in all, get your boba tea/bubble tea fix here for those in the Metro Detroit Area! read more

Yay! Asian bakery! This bakery is really small and got really crowded quick! We came after lunch and the place was packed! Not much selection and they seemed to keep refilling, but the pastries didn't seem too fresh since they were being kept in the warmer. We picked up some egg tarts, ham and cheese, custard bun, and sponge cake. The egg tart crust was a bit doughy, ham and cheese was good, the sponge cake looked dry but it was actually pretty moist. I wish I grabbed more. My only suggestion would be to actually put the buns in something that would seal to keep the freshness. I felt like when I got home the buns were starting to dry. I had to store them in a Tupperware. Overall, I would be back for more pastries and possibly one day try their drinks. read more

My first experience at QQ was absolutely delightful. The staff is so friendly and very helpful. There is a wide variety of baked goods available. I appreciate that their cake isn't overly sweet, it's just the right amount of sweetness. Also had to try the bubble tea. I had the milky black tea and it was so perfect. If one masters how to park their car in the haphazard parking lot, they are rewarded with a cafe with a impressive array of Asian pastries and drinks. BEST cheap doughnuts around, period! I love the jasmine bubble tea there, especially the fact that you can literally taste the fragrance of the tea as you drink it! The fresh fruit bubble teas taste wonderful as well. Don't get the coffee one unless you like watered down coffee. Bleugh. Even though tai pan bakery is much closer to me, I think I'm gonna make the extra little drive out to here from now on. It's much nicer and cleaner inside, and the people working there are better and more friendly. I got a coconut bun, a bun with cream covered in coconut flakes, a coconut peanut snowball, a coconut tart (pretty obvious this place is made for my coconut loving tastebuds) and a red bean and taro bun. The coconut tart thing was really delicious and moist, but also crumbly. The regular bun was delicious, and the buns with the crunchy outsides were amazing. The peanut snowball was perfectly chewy and tasty. The cream filled bun was wonderful. I expected a very heavy, overly sweet cream but it was nice and light.
