One would imagine that Smithfield VA- arguably the ham capital of the world, would be overflowing with barbecue joints. Not so much. Q Daddy's fills an unlikely void in the porcine procurement department. We arrived at about 1230 on a Saturday. The line was almost to the door, but we managed to get through the line rather quickly. Along the way, we encountered several outgoing, friendly employees who were eager to answer any questions that we had. The menu is mind-numbingly simple. To me, that's a good thing. I ordered a pork sammich with slaw, with a side of fries. My dining companion ordered the brisket sammich with a side of mac and cheese. We both had fountain drinks, and I think I spent a total of $22. The buns were buttered and toasted. It's a nice touch that a lot of places overlook. The fries are done right- they are hand cut and blanched before being fried for service. This allows for the perfect texture for the fries- light and fluffy on the inside, and crispy on the outside. We were given the option of having our fries dusted with their BBQ rub, which was sweet and smoky. A little splash of malt vinegar accented the spices perfectly. Mac and cheese is such a personal dish. If you're craving a Kraft Dinner, look elsewhere. The pasta was big, and the cheese sauce was very rice creamy. For me, it was a bit too creamy, and there wasn't quite enough sharp cheesiness to cut through all of the creaminess of the sauce. Still, it's not anything that I would get mad it. But, it's a BBQ joint. Who the hell cares about the sides? Let's get to the meat. BBQ might even be a more personal dish than mac and cheese... My pork was pulled into big, meaty, hunks. It was not overly tender and had a nice, hearty chew to it. However, it was a bit on the stringy side for me, and I could have used a little more tenderness. It was also tossed in a sweet, smoky, spicy sauce. I prefer my pork done in an Eastern NC style (vinegar-based), but it was quite good. The slaw was good... I didn't try it by itself, but it accented the sandwich just fine. I somehow caught a piece of bone in mine (it was a surprise to my molars), but hey- these things happen. The brisket was chopped and piled high on the bun. It was very tender and was seasoned with a very well-balanced rub- smoky, spicy, and sweet. I like the texture of sliced brisket better than chopped, but that's a personal preference. I wish I would have ordered the brisket sandwich instead. I would totally, 100% come back, and I would recommend it to anyone in the area for good BBQ in Smithfield. read more

The food was amazing and people so friendly. When we walked in, we were greeted by the pit master who gave us a walk though of the menu, options and recommendations. We tried the pork, brisket, ribs, Mac n cheese, baked beans and cheddar hush puppies. Everything was delicious! The ribs fell off the bone and there was no gristle in any of the meat. The fresh cut fries were just that and were even tastier dipped in their 'awesome sauce'. I also thought their sweet tea was the perfect blend. We also got to try the molasses cookie which literally tastes like Christmas and their ice cream was absolutely fantastic. We spent a very reasonable $27 for a family of four. Went there today of lunch arriving at 11 AM when it opened. The line was to the door at soon as it opened. Need to get here early, especially if you want the brisket. I got the pulled pork sandwich with baked beans and coke slaw as sides. The pulled pork is pulled, just like the menu says. I thought it was great and preferred it better than chopped. It had great flavor and was not dry at all, but not over sauced either. You taste both the pork and the sauce instead of just sauce. The build the sandwiches on a scale to be sure all are the right size. Great idea. At $4.95 it's a deal. The sides were good as well but at $1.95 each, they should either be a little bigger or on my cost $1.50 for the size they are now. They are good though. The awesome sauce is great on the fries, would not put it on the BBQ sandwich. Staff was very friendly and service was quick. We will be back for sure. read more
