We stopped in for lunch on a weekday. The business was very quiet a little after noon but they had plenty of employees standing by because the number of diners really picked up before we were done with our meal - and no wonder! We received very attentive service from our server Sonya and the pizzas we ordered were superb. Their chicken-cheddar-ranch pizza is something I have not seen anywhere else. It came loaded with cheese, tomatoes, and chunks of white meat chicken - the crust was delicious, as well. The Greek pizza was also generously topped with feta, tomatoes, spinach, and cheese. I was also very happy to see that the Greek pizza comes with Kalamata olives, rather than black olives, making it a more authentic Greek pizza in my opinion. The "small" 12-inch pizzas were each more than enough to feed two people. My glass of soft drink was never allowed to get more than half empty before our server was back to refill it for me. Normally this place would get 5 stars across the board from me. Today, sadly a 2 is a generous review. Pizza and their food is still amazing as always, but the service was atrocious this evening. Our server took our drink order and then I believe forgot about us. She even took our menus from the table without taking our order. Once I said something, she was not even concerned about it. Just blew it off as if I was in the wrong for reminding her that we hadn't ordered yet. Needless to say, she may have ruined one or our favorite restaurants in this area for us....and on my actual birthday. read more

Pretty much your standard NY style pizza. It isn't bad but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. Napoli isn't far away and has far better pizza. If you are in the area and looking a quick slice for lunch it is fine but if you want truly great pizza look elsewhere. read more

Sal's in Smithfield has some of the best NY-style pizza in the entire region. Quality ingredients, cheese blend, sauce- the pizza is top-notch and we are very particular when it comes to our pizza. Hoagies, cheese steaks, desserts- all delicious. We drive about 30 minutes to get their pizza over many places which are much closer. They also do a great job when it comes to office lunches and catering- they can do big pans/trays of entrees, salad, etc and everyone always raves over everything. Highly recommended!!! read more

The restaurant had a homey small town vibe. Nothing too updated, you could tell the plates have had some wear over the years. The customer service was amazing though. We couldn't have asked for a better waitress. She genuinely made us feel welcomed. We kept it simple by ordering garlic knots and two pizzas, one pepperoni and one white pizza. Our food came out surprisingly very quickly. The garlic knots looked amazing, but I was disappointed that they tasted a bit dry and over cooked. The pizzas were pretty good though and larger than what I thought they would be. The only thing I could nitpick was that a couple of slices hadn't been covered completely with any topping, so it kind of tasted like we were just eating flatbread. I called in an order to Sal's on Mother's Day really craving a calzone but I also wanted wings. I'm from western NY and only get excellent wings when I'm home. I decided to ask if I could order them extra crispy mild and she said "Sure!" Everything was delivered fresh and fast. The wings were just like home. I've not ever been so impressed by wings in the South. Calzone was killer and so was the cheese steak. I ordered the chicken wings and the garlic knots, It came with roughly 10-12 wings for 15.99 and the garlic knots came with 7 of them for 5.99. The garlic knots were so good and the reason I had orginally came here. Now the wings I got were BBQ and the sauce is very good, your average BBQ sauce, but the wing itself was kind of hard and not very appetizing. This has become our family favorite, whether it's dining in, getting it to go or having one of their delightful drivers deliver it to is we dine here often for several reasons! first let me tell you about the Tomato based sayces such as what is in one of my favorite dishes here at Sals. Their spaghetti and meatballs are to die for, but even better is the tomato sauce for the spaghetti. This is the only sauce that does not give me heartburn. so I asked the chef what his secret to balancing the PH. he uses roasted carrots and the natural sugars from the carrots helps reduce the heartburn discomfort by lowering the acidy. shocked I was as I had no idea carrots were even in my spaghetti sauce. the meatballs are divine; so tender, moist and huge. I had 3 meatballs in my dinner portion along with a freshly baked roll, it's warm and golden brown toasted perfection with creamy butter that melst instantly. I opted to add on the side salad for an additional 1.99. this salad was huge for a side salad. Sals portion sizes are so generous that you definitely may get 2-3 meals depending on your typical portion sizes. read more

As I was looking at their menu, I noticed Italian classics that included pizzas, pastas, calzones, strombolis, and Italian subs. I got the chicken parm sub. My husband and I just finished a rigorous work out and we were starving! This restaurant is near our gym on the way home. I ordered salad and battered mushrooms. They were okay. I'm giving it only 3 stars because the mushrooms seemed to be frozen and processed. The salad was fresh and decent, but not like the salads I usually choose. The staff are really friendly and efficient. I would recommend this restaurant and stick to ordering pizzas because they looked amazing! I'm from the Chicago region, so that alone tells you I am picky about pizza. I have very high expectations and that would be the only reason for 4/5 stars (docking a star because no where else compares to Chicago pizza). Sals is VERY good though, and far better than your average chain pizza places. The pizzas are huge and the restaurant has never messed up my order. Plus, they deliver to my house out in the "country" where no other pizza place does. The pizza is a little pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for! read more

Delicious food and great location. We love Sal's pizza and garlic knots. We drove out from Newport News just to go to this locations. They have amazing NY style pizza at a great price. We stopped in with a large group on a Sunday night. This location has a nice "pizza joint" feeling that took me back to the nostalgia of growing up in NY. The staff was the perfect combo of attentive, funny and sarcastic. We had fun messing around with them. This location was very clean, and well maintained. I look forward to going back. Completely disappointed! Sals used to have great food. The past 3 times I went I regret it. Complete wast of money. Even after 2 attempts to tell them to fully cook a pizza they can't do it (see picture). Save your money and get a frozen one from a store. I used to love Sal's and it's just declined soooo much in the last few months to a year. This last time the other night we ordered and used DoorDash because ordering from them their driver already left for the day. Our subs were wrong and had something on them that I'm allergic to. They forgot our dessert we ordered and the door dasher said she asked them several times if it was in the bag but she isn't allowed to open the food and check so she got to the house and had to go back. So I called Sals and asked them to give her the dessert and what they could do since she has to return. Now we had to extra tip her because she wasted gas on their mistake and now we wasted money on their mistake as well. The host said they would offer her food and a dessert and when we got back to my house she said they didn't offer her anything. I am so disappointed in a local shop acting like this in our small town. We spend a lot of money to support small businesses. I told them I couldn't eat my food due to the allergy and their mess up and the girl say they couldn't do anything about that and they close in 45 mins so she has to go. I asked several times to speak to the manager and she said she would speak to them not me. read more
