This is seriously legit no-frills Polish food. If I hadn't come here with a friend who was in-the-know, I would probably have run out in intimidation! The line was long, but the menu is on the wall. You order with the lady behind the counter, she shouts your order to the 2 ladies in the kitchen and you wait on the side until your food is ready. Once your food is ready, they beckon you over, you pay and then you grab your food either on a tray cafeteria style if you are eating there or you take your to-go bag. Prices are par for the area, but the portions are gigantic. If Polish food were my comfort food, this restaurant would be my soul kitchen. It truly is my Polish Grandma's cooking, if I had a Polish grandma. My landlords were polish growing up and they did feed me, so it does bring back some good tasty throwback memories! read more

Don't miss this special dining experience before it disappears from a changing New York. I'd have to say our lunch feast yesterday at Pyza was spectacular (and a true bargain). It may have been foolhardy taking my sister-in-law visiting from Chicago to a Polish restaurant in NYC - but she was also impressed. We put in orders for red borscht with a mushroom sauerkraut blintz, cheese and potato pierogis, sweet cheese blintzes, beet salad, and mashed potatoes with stuffed cabbage for the meat-eaters. I thought the pierogis and blintzes were especially stellar, while they were also enraptured by the stuffed cabbage. Pros: good food, low price. Cons: slow service, announcements in Polish. Had a variety plate with a bit of everything in it, though had to wait about 20 minutes for it. Must of the food was as good as it gets (sausage, stuffed cabbage) although dinner items weren't great (meat perogies too salty, stewed cabbage too sour). On service: they have no drink menu and the cashier lady didn't help much. She said theres only standard cold sodas, but later I saw someone drinking hot tea from a cup. I wish I'd known about Pyza before last night. Very good food for not a lot of money. It's as easy as that. My plate of bigos was really big. Lots of sauerkraut, well seasoned, potatoes that weren't clumpy. Delicious. And I knew that I liked the pierogies, but after reading that they are hand made, to order, made me pat myself on the back a little bit picking out how delicious they were. The skin isn't too thick, they are flavorful and served very warm, but not "scald your mouth" hot. And while the pickle soup could be a little bit pickle-ier, it was very good. Some people might scoff at a restaurant where you have to get your own silverware, but I had no qualms. I just wish that I could have gotten my own water too. I'll be back in the future. read more

This place is a MUST GO for extremely good homemade style comfort food. The portions are BIG and filling and yes they are cheap. They provide Polish food and polish food only, so its better to order something you feel comfortable eating such as pork cutlet, chicken cutlet before you buy something special, such as pork knuckles. All the soup there are great, i suggest the Mushroom soup which they have it about twice a week, but of course the pickle soup is also very yum if mushroom soup are not on the list. nalesniki is another good meal (polish pancake with cream filling) its almost desert like but still fills you up. if you want something light and sweet, try this one. You can pick different sides from beets, cucumber salad, regular salad and others. The cashier sometimes gets confused if you order in English, bring a polish friend or just place your order slowly to prevent getting something not what you wanted. read more

Pyza is hands down some of the best Polish food I've had. With Greenpoint being the place to go for great Polish food, I'm not surprised at it's location. But the value here is what really stands out. The relationship of price to quality and quantity here is really impressive. Usually you have to give up one of those three things in some way. You can't have all three... but this isn't your usual. What you do give up is maybe the ambiance of a standard sit-down restaurant but there are plenty of other places to get that. It's not here. Cry about it at some other restaurant with a candle. If one goes to Karczma for the ambiance, you go to Pyza for the food. This place also changed my outlook on some traditional Polish dishes. I thoroughly enjoyed every single piece of beauty that came out of these three take-out boxes, every single thing was delicious. For me, the stuffed cabbage here outdoes the mighty Karczma. And with two sides with every entree, you get plenty of food. Cheese and potato pierogis with beet salad and cole slaw ($7.50) or the Hungarian pancakes sandwiching an amazing saucy meat filling with pickles and sauerkraut ($10) or the Polish plate with a sampling of all the traditional dishes including that stuffed cabbage and this amazing and generous meaty sauerkraut ($10) will all hit the spot and leave you with lunch for tomorrow. At first, I thought this was some hipster's alternative spelling of pizza. You can't blame me, given the proximity to Williamsburg. Yelp informed me that it was in fact a Polish restaurant. I'd never had Polish food, but judging from the signs in the neighborhood, Greenpoint seemed like the perfect place to dive in. Though I have nothing to compare it to, it sees legit. This is a no-frills restaurant. It's like a cross between a cafeteria and a small-town diner. They focus on food as opposed to presentation. I ordered the potato dumpling with meet. Whatever I expected was quite different from what I got. The dumpling sort of looked like a dinosaur egg in shape, texture, and a shiny/slimy coating. I initially regretted my choice, but that regret dissipated once I started eating. The meat filling was really good, particularly with the chopped onions on top. The dumpling was served with a choice of salad. I chose the cucumber salad. I didn't like it very much. The dressing was like watered down milk, and didn't have any discernible flavor. I added salt and pepper, which made it a little better, but I felt no need to finish. The prices are great, and it's a good place to have authentic (I assume, but what do I know?) Pyza is the usual ethnic cafeteria: you order at the counter with the nice Polish woman, pick up your food after a short wait (under ten minutes), and when you're finished eating, put your dishes in the dirty plates bin. Service is minimal, which is just as well, because the food is cheap for the hearty portions you receive. You get a free small dish of salad with your order and, best of all, a cup of Kool-Aid. Yes, when you eat here, you're literally drinking the Kool-Aid. The food is simple, but good fare. The grated carrots on the Greek Fish were mouth-meltingly good. Pirogies were doughy, but probably handmade. Mashed potatoes were, unsurprisingly, seasoned well and smooth. Not a bad place to stop by while waiting for B's Bikes around the corner to finish up with your bike. 5 stars for the Kool-Aid! 4 stars for the food, good and cheap. 3 stars for the sparse decor and Polish music videos. As a proud member of the Polish nation, I can attest to the awesomeness of this place. The food is very typical to what your Mama or Babcia would have been making before all those vegan and gluten-free cretins came into existence. Anyway, these types of cafeteria-style feeding holes sprouted out in Greenpoint in the 80s and 90s to feed all those hungry and hardy Polish men who came to work in the US. They needed something quick, cheap, filling, and a reminder of home. Quality varied by location, but Pyza is as good as it gets. While many closed in the new Greenpoint, Pyza is still chugging along. Heck this place seems to be frozen in time, same ol' bad (but efficient) customer service, outdated decor (if any), and kitchen ladies behind a tiny window. Come in with an open mind, and don't expect the latest food craze or fancy dining. I mean you have to grab your own utensils, get to work! Grab a big piece of meat, a soup (zurek, borscht, etc), potatoes, side of shredded cabbage/beets/carrots, and a glass of kompot. You'll never go hungry again, all for less than $10! read more

Dirt-cheap homestyle Polish comfort food. For example: white borscht, $2. For two bucks you get a big bowl of mysteriously delicious white creamy soup and a heaping plate of mashed potatoes and some caramelized onions. I dream about the white borscht. It's so good I have to have some every time I go to Greenpoint. Or pierogi, three varieties, five bucks apiece. There's a long menu, and they're always out of half the things on it, and some of them are poorly translated (e.g. "buckwheat" -- that's it, just "buckwheat"), but haven't you always wanted to hang out with hard-working Polish men after work? The best part is if something is bad (and there are occasional misses, or things that aren't quite what you expect), it was only four bucks or so, and you can try again. (Hint: white borscht.) Plus, you get to watch old cartoons dubbed into Polish. What could be better? read more

This cafeteria style restaurant is one of the best perks in the neighborhood. As the other reviews indicate, the food and value are excellent. My favorite part about the restaurant is the communal feeling you get when you are nearby. First, I should say that it's always packed. If it's open, there are people of all ages out front, in line or sitting down enjoying their food. Everyone is happy and people converse with each other more than usual. You stand in line, order and watch 4 Polish ladies in the back cooking serve you up a plate full of awesome food, why wouldn't you be happy? Random facts: everyone gets a little cup of fruit punch with your meal if you sit down and eat it there. There is no to-go menu, but you can order your food to-go. I've lived in Greenpoint for years and have always meant to come here, but somehow I put it off till now. I wish I hadn't. My favorite Polish place for sure! This is another great Greenpoint Polish eatery, although I prefer the cooking at Relax. This place, however, is very popular with Polish folks. I enjoyed the cutlet here as well as the pierogies. The stuffed cabbage is good, too. I thought the portions were a little smaller than at Relax, and the flavors a little different. I really wanted to love this place, and some items seemed to be good at first, but with every bite more and more disgusting-ness came through. Everything was swimming in greasy lard, from the potato pancakes, to the pierogies, to the potato dumplings. The cucumber salad was watery and lacking flavor. The chicken-cutlet was probably the best item ordered by my party. That being said, it was nothing more than a pounded out, breaded and fried piece of chicken. Even a squirt of lemon juice would've helped that thing out. This is not authentic Polish food - it's simply cheap Polish food. If you're looking for something really delicious, I highly recommend Krolewskie Jadlo!!!
