(more 3.5 stars, but I prefer to round up) Situated in a shopping center off of Bulverde Green & TPC Parkway is one of the very few bars in the area. That alone deserves kudos because it really is a missed opportunity for this part of town. The drink pricing is really good and the staff is quite friendly here. Definitely more of a whole in the wall, laid back vibe. They have a few games like darts, giant jenga, and pool to name a few. You can definitely tell this bar has a loyal crowd but if it it's your first time they are more than welcoming. Overall if you're in the area for a drink swing by but it's not necessary a drive across town for. Bonus- They're right next door to Los Balitos Taco Shop which is open 24 hours. #winning read more

When I walked in I was unimpressed with a shotgun style room with little bar space. But they won me over pretty quickly. The bartender was really, really attentive and efficient, two traits one should value from a bartender. He jumped on drinks and when the bar was a little packed to get them to us easily he was around the bar handing them out before we knew it. He also rounded up empties and moved a table to make drinking-while-darting easier for us (without anyone asking)! They have two digital dart board setups, pool tables, table shuffleboard, even a hoops game. Everything required quarters or cash, which I don't carry and I didn't see an ATM. Not surprisingly it was easy as can be with the bartender; he threw the dollars on the tab and off we were to darts. Everyone there seemed pretty nice and into having fun. Yawn. Not a very exciting place. What kind of a theme is puzzles? I'm puzzled, to say the least. "Puzzles" comes from the fact that they've tacked up completed jigsaw puzzles all over the place as "art." Most of the puzzles are tacky and weird. Think unicorns and rainbows. The atmosphere is cold. There are a few games around - Golden Tee, and pool. They do offer fairly cheap drinks for the neighborhood. Cheaper than most of the other places around here. The place is somewhat clean, and well lit. I'll go back if I'm thirsty, but I'm not going to go out of my way. read more

I tried this tavern for the first time on a Saturday night. There were maybe 25 people and there was a touch tunes option at this place. There was a good mix of music from various patrons but when I went to play my salsa music ( that I paid for) the bar tender lowered it called it shit and then changed it. I get that it may not be everyone's cup of tea but I was insulted and bothered by the comments. I at that point just felt quite unwelcome. read more

I rarely have anything nice things to say about bars who set up shop in strip malls, but Puzzles Tavern was a pleasant surprise over the weekend. After having dinner around the corner, I suggested to my friends that we check out Puzzles for a post dinner drink. A co-worker of mine drinks here on occasion and he swears by the $2 drink specials. The bar has some interesting decor... the walls are filled with framed - puzzle - art. behind the bar is a rather large 10 thousand piece puzzle that can't really be described by words. It's like Reading Rainbow Wetmare - with land animals, rainbows, fish and other things I didn't commit to memory. Darts, pool, internet jukebox and HDTV's are also available to get distracted with. read more

This place is close to work and home so I stop here often for drinks! The staff is great, the Internet Juke Box is nice, they have great drink specials! But, they are also often out of everything. This conversation has happened more than I can count. Guest: I'll take a Dos XX Bartender: We're out Guest. Okay, Corona, then. Bartender: We don't have that either. This bar also has two very different crowds. It's known as a service industry bar. And during happy hour (3-8) you'll see managers from restaurants and restaurant owners, small business owners, lawyers. If you go there for a late night drink, it's full of waiters, chefs, valet parkers. Either way the crowd is mostly male, and most of the women that come there are with their husbands. Looking for a break from the fanciful JW Marriott up the street? That was my train of thought when I discovered Puzzles. I am more of a dive bar guy and while I was staying at the JW it was totally nice and posh, but I missed not being pampered to and meeting real locals. Puzzles is the perfect place for this. There are friendly patrons here and many of the folks who work at the JW come here to drink since it is the closest bar and has really reasonable prices for drinks. Went to this bar for the first time on my 21st birthday. I was super excited and to be fair the bartender super amazing and got me really hyped about my birthday, great service and the two drinks I was able to get were really good. However like 30 minutes after I got there a fight broke out with a woman becoming violent and yelling about race and me and my husband left the building for our safety. Sitting on a bench outside the bar, we heard what sounded like someone throwing a chair or a person into the window, we heard it almost shatter. We stayed in our car and watched and 10 minutes later everyone started leaving the bar and we heard someone had their car keys stolen. We had to leave without my husbands ID just for our safety because I started having a panic attack and people in the parking lot were talking about guns and threatening people. Terrifying experience, definitely just find somewhere nicer because I'm pretty sure there people were regulars. I hope someone called the police on that Karen. Be safe! read more

Puzzles is definitely my favorite neighborhood bar. A place I don't mind walking in alone to have a drink or two. The bartenders are very friendly and the crowd is always looking to have a good time. It's a great place to watch your favorite sports team with their three large flat screens. They have an awesome jukebox and how can you forget all the puzzles on the wall. There are few times in a bar (except between 10 and 1030 tonight) where you have a bartender that has so many friends in the place that when she decides to have a cigarette, everyone leaves with her. Well except for this guy, that had just tipped her $2 on a $5 drink. Yes, at one second 8 patrons are in the bar with a bartender and the next, no bartender and 7 patrons/bartenders friends outside smoking. Whoever owns this bar should be very concerned with how much she is probably not only losing you in customers that can pay their "full tabs" but how much she is giving away in free liquor to her friends. read more

Small, no frills but very decent. Good drink specials ($3 Kamikazes), nice bartenders, laid back crowd. Two pool tables and some sort of virtual golf game thingy. Also the jukebox has a good selesction of songs. Most of my friends go to Puzzles at least once a week. read more

Good small bar that is close to the house. Good place to take a group of friends smaller than 10, the place is not that big. They do not turn the music up so loud it blows the speakers or do anything annoying with lights. It is just a bar with two small pool tables, a Golden Tee machine, and a jukebox. First time i went there the bartender was walking around the tables clearing them off. We asked her for a drink and she replied with "What do i look like, a waitress?!?!" Kinda snoody if you ask me. Slow service. So when we left she looked at my friends tip ($3 on a $20 tab. 15% not bad.) and she comments that this tip was too low. So my next friend left her $0 tip and told her she shouldn't be so judgemental. Well the next time we tried to go back they told us we had been banned from the establishment and to never return. If you're looking for a bar with a good atmosphere and decent drink prices, Puzzles is your place. Their buffalo wings are the best (I would come back from the future just to eat more of those deliciously spicy wings!) Be sure to ask for the bartenders Ted or Barney, they mix up the best drinks.
