Avoiding the known "hot spots" on a Sunday morning, we decided to try what turned out to be a quintessential diner in the heart of Dunnellon: The Purple Sage Cafe. We were welcomed as we walked in the door and able to choose from a variety of tables/booths. They stop serving pancakes and waffles at 11 am, but all other breakfast items are available until 2 pm. The selection was exactly what you would expect from a diner: a few standard breakfast dishes, biscuits and gravy, a few omelette choices and you could build your own omelette. We were here in a weekday. We really enjoyed our meal. Two couples for breakfast, we all had something different (it was months ago and I don't recall specifically), and we all came away impressed. My husband and I love this little cafe...last night (friday) he called from work with a strong desire to go for the A.Y.C.E fish,that he loves as well as myself. We had a great dinner. Than he order a brownie 2.00 and myself of course peanut butter pie 4.99 both of our choices were excellent. And the prices fair which now days other places would ask more. What a pleasant experience! Tried Purple Sage today first time. It was such a friendly place, even the patrons arriving & leaving spoke to strangers wishing them a good day! Interesting menu....quite a selection. I tried the gyro & fries which were absolutely a delight...had been a long time without a gyro. I could barely eat half & it was outstanding. Brought home the same for husband along with a nice sized slice of pecan pie for him and he was very pleased with both. I was dying to try the peanut butter pie, looked outstanding! Just discovered this restaurant! It was so clean, comfortable and we are anxious to try other dishes. We had breakfast and it was great! Very nice staff but food disappointing. One time a dozen wings for $9.99 but the wings were small. Recently I went for breakfast and part of order were eggs(2) over easy. I drove over an hour from Brooksville to this restaurant. Unfortunately, the entire menu had been changed as well as the prices. The service was satisfactory. I was disappointed because I was really craving Indian food. The owner had recently lost her husband and therefore I understood why the yelp cite was not updated. We found this by accident while visiting Dunnellon. Very friendly staff. It has such a comfortable small town feeling, but with some very unusual food. I got the vegetarian burger, which was a mash of potatoes, vegetables and spices on a bun topped with tomato, lettuce and onion, served with slaw or fries. We chose the fries. It was unique and enjoyable. The peanut butter pie was amazing. If you want to move to this lovely town, the owner is also a Realtor. I don't live in the area, but if I did, I would go there for the homemade desserts - a lot! read more

I read the reviews and it was mixed . We had people tell us it was good and another said it was fair at best. We walked in and were met by the owner who I wouldn't say I expected. Serviced as commissary manager in the Embassy . Get the Blueberry Pancakes they are amazing . But I will say everything was good . We will be back for sure ! read more

My friend and I decided to give this place a try, but was less than impressed. She had a hamburger which she didn't think was actually beef since the texture and taste was different. Owner/server said it was beef. She only ate half of it, then went to McDonalds for a hamburger, stated even their value burger was better! I ordered the special - coconut shrimp. Five very, very greasy shrimp. Taste was good but that much oozing grease was not tummy friendly. We both agreed that the fries that came with both meals were good. I ordered an omelette that was cooked perfectly, and the biscuits and gravy are simply amazing homemade biscuits. Hadn't really noticed this location before. While they are on a main street it's easy to miss but seemed to be worth the stop. Friendly staff. Place appeared spotless. Did Meatlovers omelet. Very large and nicely cooked. Good selection of baked goods available. Interesting thing is the variety on the menu. Apparently all-you-can-eat fish on Friday is a speciality.
