We were visiting Crystal River for the weekend, and wanted breakfast/brunch food before heading out. We had a short wait and were seated in about 10 minutes. The Biscuit Barn delivered! The grits and biscuits were delicious. The biscuits were golden brown, soft on the inside, and perfectly paired with the sausage gravy. The grits were also very well made, and perfect in the bowl! Three complaints: (1) parking was limited but definitely of size for the seats available in the restaurant; (2) the coffee was WAY too strong, bitter, and lacking normal coffee notes; and (3) they added a restaurant fee on the ticket. Family owned and the owners are actually doing the work along with the staff. Super busy and bustling atmosphere. The food is down home, simple and very good. As the name declares it's famous for its biscuits. Big, fluffy and filling. I had an omelette and do t usually finish but it delicious. We had a hidden menu grits bowl that they were able to customize, Philly cheesesteak omelette that was fluffy and delicious and the eggs benny. Giving the the biscuit barn four stars with one major caveat- what they call sausage gravy has no sausage in it... absolutely no meat that I could see or taste. Other than that, it was a great local joint that we stopped by while viewing the manatees my biscuit with ham cheese and egg was delicious and the hashbrowns cooked just the way I like them. We had breakfast here before heading home from a weekend in Crystal River. I was sold after reading there was an option between grits, home fries, hashbrowns, and hashbrowns patties. Came to this diner due to all the great reviews and pictures taken. It is a little hole in the wall diner (I expected it already to be good). Husband and I were craving a really good breakfast. We both got the barn biscuit and it did not disappoint. At first I put the gravy on the side (I'm picky with my gravy) so I tried it before smothering it in my biscuit. Holy deliciousness - This place has amazing biscuits!!! Traveling through town and it was our first time visiting. We were on the hunt for breakfast burritos (which are oddly hard to find in the area besides a chain restaurant called Breakfast Station) and this place popped up. From the outside, we were skeptical and my husband almost pulled out of the parking lot. I came in and was immediately greeted and sat at nice booth in the corner. The staff was amazingly nice, friendly, and service couldn't be better - especially from my server, Ashley! This small diner off of the main drag in Crystal River is unassuming, parking lot full of palm trees and rusty nautical things, and it just feels like the diner you want- big counter as soon as you walk in, and little added-on dining rooms full of Formica-topped tables and sliding chairs. Brewed drip coffee kicks it off for us, but there's orange juice and stuff like that, too. But what we came for: biscuits. There are biscuits everywhere on the menu, as sides, as entrees. Want a simple breakfast before your manatee swim? Try the "Rope," a smothered biscuit with eggs and more. There are a few other interesting breakfast goodies, like a pot roast hash (I got a smothered biscuit on the side), and your standard combos of breakfast meats and eggs (with biscuits). Also ordered a home made biscuit along with link style sausages. Hers was very good she said. My links were very good and I could have eaten a double order. While I usually rely on web based reviews when scoping out my next stop, today's visit came from a local when asked where is the best breakfast slot locally. The glow in her eyes and passion in her voice made it clear that the Biscuit Barn would be a stop whole in the Crytal River area. A big thanks to Ananada from Cody's for this recommendation. While I did have full faith in her, I did see that the reviews were through the roof anyway. Stopped in midweek for some breakfast and was able to sit down right away wiatth seating at a table or the counter. Being solo, opted for the breakfast counter to be able to interact with the staff and fellow counter patrons. As soon as I say down, my drink order was placed and I was sipping on my coffee. With so many great options to choose from picking a meal was not easy. Ended up picking the Big Barn 4 egg Farmers Omlette (Bacon, Ham Sausage) that came with potatoes and a biscuit. Being down south, had to have the gravy with my biscuit at least one time, especially since I was on vacation. Order came out pretty quick and it was delicious. The service was fantastic and my cup never ran dry. While I could not this meal every day (well I actually could but should not), it was a tasty breakfast that was awesome. Loved the charm if this place and felt at home especially since it was decorated for Christmas. The southern hospitality was great in the staff were super friendly and treated me as if I were a local. When returning to the area, will definitely be back. Needless to say, I joined The Biscuit Barn clean plate club this morning. For those reading and about to embark on this food adventure, definitely recommend stopping in at the Crystal River preserve State Park - Churchouse Hammock Trail to walk off some of the breakfast. Let's not forget the giant fluffy biscuits including savory or the sweet American Pie biscuit. We have crab cake Benedict, American pie biscuit, eggs, waffles, bacon and hash browns. Cleaned our plates! Everything cooked perfectly and served up fast. Servers are friendly and attentive. Restaurant is cozy and gives off a down home family vibe. It leaves you feeling happy and satisfied. Really fresh veggies. The veggies include tomato, green pepper, onion, and mushroom. I also added jalapeños to mine. Opted for the biscuit and hashbrowns on the side. These two pair nicely. Crispy biscuit exterior and a fluffy interior. Cooked very well. Hashbrowns were seasoned well and not oily. The Biscuit Barn in Crystal River was actually a second location of the popular Homosassa Biscuit Barn ( which now has changed owners and it's name to Art's Diner). I have only been to the Crystal River location twice because I live near the original Homosassa restaurant. Since we were in the area we decided to give it a try. Known for their delicious breakfast plates especially their huge, scrumptious biscuits that they offer in a variety of different biscuit sandwiches - it is a popular go to breakfast location. Biscuit Barn is located on US Hwy 19 in a stand alone building on the left side heading up towards Inglis. Going into the restaurant we noticed a for sale sign for the business in the window which disappointed us because when this restaurant changes owners, it will be the end of an era . Change can be difficult especially for those of us who appreciated their consistently delicious breakfast and lunch offerings. This day I ordered one of their three egg omelets. I have to admit I am very finicky about how my omelets are cooked. They must be fluffy, cooked fully on the inside but no brown crunchy spots on the outside. It must be perfectly yellow and the fillings should be generous. I tried their Mexican Omelet and I have to say it was really, really good. Filled with seasoned ground beef, fried onions, jalapenos and Cheddar cheese with sour cream and salsa on the side. Perfectly cooked - no brown spots and nice and fluffy, it made me one happy camper! Their omelets come with your choice of one side - fried potatoes or grits. I chose my favorite : grits. I always add extra butter and a little salt to taste. One of the better tasting grits sides in our County. My omelet also came with a choice of bread : white, wheat or rye or their ever popular biscuit. I chose rye bread, toasted and buttered perfectly. A container of various jellies are on all tables. Usually the offerings are Strawberry, Mixed Berry or Spiced Apple which was my choice. It was a great decision, the flavor is unique. Apple flavor comes through the spices but I cannot identify the spices except for cinnamon. We had coffee with our breakfast plates. The usual cup of restaurant coffee - why do they all taste the same? Just once I like to find a restaurant that makes an excellent cup of bold roasted coffee served with Heavy Whipping Cream. I didn't hurt my feelings that we weren't offered a refill on our coffees because our waitress was too busy serving and talking to her usual customers. I would have appreciated the asking though. Another peeve of mine is in these Mom and Pop restaurants the waitresses ALWAYS have their cell phones sticking out their pockets or they're checking it. Nothing screams unprofessional like that in my humble opinion. So in closing - food great, coffee so-so, and service needs to be worked on but with the business being sold - who knows what is to come! read more
