Island Outpost is deceptive. From the exterior, it looks like an old gas station. From the interior, it looks like someone dropped a tiki bar into a beer cooler. It takes spending some time here to discover this diner's treasures. First, John, the main cook, is a master at the greasy spoon. There are little surprises- in-house smoked pork, pressed cubans, a Mango glaze made by an Ozello local for the pancakes- that elevate the food even further. Expect to see a full bar and dining room during breakfast and dinners (don't worry, there's more space outside and at the cafeteria-style tables on the other side of the bar). Second, come here a few times and expect to be treated like a local. Laurie, the amazing server, will keep your favorite beer in stock in the cooler. John will innovate with your usual order (If you love a Cuban for dinner, then you'll extra love his spin on it for breakfast: add a couple fried eggs! How about smoked pork on pizza?) This is definitely a locals' hangout, but it isn't just for old-timer Ozello-ans. Third, Island Outpost is one of the most generous businesses I have seen. They provide meals for major holidays and host the most rocking Christmas party you've seen. Much of their produce is grown by one of their neighbors. Their small store is stocked with edible items crafted by locals, like hot sauces, pepper jellies, and honey sourced from the bees under the water tower. Oh boy, we did not expect what we got We were here for dinner, and the surprise is this place is great The service was fantastic. The menu absolutely one of the best I've seen around pricing was wonderful. We had some wings and they were great. I had the clam chowder and it was great. I had the clam chowder. I had a salad with eight shrimp and the hangover sauce and it was great , we also had the nachos which we brought most of home because it was way too big for us to finish. Drove by this place for several years, wasn't sure what this place was. Friends told us, so we gave it a shot. Little hometown restaurant run by John and his wife. Hard working, extremely dedicated to their community serve very tasty and reasonably priced food. Since we discovered this place the wife and I have tasted everything on the menu. He has specials on certain days, pizza day, taco day, baked chicken day, meat loaf day etc... The even have pot luck events which involve the entire community. When I looked up this place on yelp for myself I was very disappointed at the lack of photos anyone had posted before this so I felt it was important I up the bar here. Island Outpost is a hidden gem in the Crystal River area and definitely worth a visit. As low key and inconspicuous as this place is the food is fantastic. They do breakfast and lunch and the portions are generous and delicious. To call it a restaurant isn't really accurate, more like a convenience store that happens to serve food. From the outside you wouldn't know how good this food is. I'm attaching plenty of photos of some of the dishes and hopefully a video if Yelp takes video clips. Amazing Hangover Shrimp! Got it with fries and cole slaw. Local favorite for sure. Serve beer and wine. 2 of us ate, shared the meal, adding a few more shrimp, with each having a beer and the cost was about $22. So good! Service was great too! read more

The Hung Over Shrimp, prepared with the lightest dusting of cornmeal and a sweet chili sauce, were delectable. Several customers commented on the dry rub barbecue (slow-cooked on site) & the tacos. Most of the food is fried in some way. The clam chowder tasted a bit like Campbell's canned soup. But we didn't go for the food. We went for the dollar beer. But we were pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and the many characters sitting around the bar. I've been here for breakfast twice, and the food is good; freshly prepared with care. I often order my eggs over medium to insure that the whites are set, and I usually have to send them back, as so many line cooks don't get it and fry them over easy. The owner here knows how to cook eggs, and I appreciate that. I can't comment on lunch or dinner, as I haven't tried either, but I understand they have live music some nights. This is a laid back place with lots of island regulars hanging out, taking advantage of the free internet access and catching up on the latest news. WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE!!!! The Outplace is not just a place--it is an experience. Imagine a gas station, smoked BBQ, a convience store, a bar, bait shop, a grill/restaurant, and a karoke place with a dance floor---then add $1.00 draft beer. Now add friendly owners and other customers, and you have a great place to visit. The Outpost serves a full breakfast, starting around 5:30 AM for the fishers, lunch (inlcuding a very good BBQ), and a dinner special on Friday and Saturday night that was very good. Be sure you get there early--when the special is sold out--it is sold out!! Karoke on Friday night is a blast. Your voice will be welcomed. There are a few regulars, some good singers, some bad--and 2-3 very good. The dance floor is fairly large for such a small place, and can accomodate 12-15 couples with ease. The owners, John and Diane(sp?) welcome you like old friends when you enter, you can have the server bring you your draft beer ($1.00), or you can get your own from the long coolers along the wall, and put it on your tab. Bring your friends to the Friday night karoke, plan to spend a few hours, and have the best time ever. We had 9 in our party, had the dinner special that we had "reserved", stayed from 7:30 until midnight with MUCHO beer, and the tab was only $130, not including tip. The place is disgusting, filthy, nasty. If you go there, when you leave, you smell like old grease. Just go to the bathroom and look in the back. It's filthy, the sink, where they wash their dishes was disgusting. I definitely will never go back. The gentleman that owns the place...I think his name is John, is very nice. His wife, on the other hand (not sure what her name was) thinks she's a singer. NOT....what an ego. Never again....my ears were assaulted with her screaming. Yeah, it's one of the only places in Ozello, but that doesn't mean I have to go. Think I'll try Cosmo's Corner. Looks a whole lot cleaner. And they have karaoke also on Friday nights.
