It was time to replace our 10 year old mattress and after trying out a few different brands at another store we were pretty set on getting a Purple mattress. They had quite a range to try out and Andre was such an amazing rep! He let us take our time trying out each mattress type while explaining the pros and cons of what we were trying and would even switch out the pillows based on my and my husband's sleep preferences. He shared his own personal experience with some of the products which really helped with the decision making process but never felt like he was pushing anything on us. My husband and I have different sleep needs so we opted for more time to think on which mattress we wanted to invest in before committing to a purchase, but did buy two of their Dream layer pillows which were the best pillows I've ever slept on. We were in the market for a new mattress for our son, who fell in love with Purple mattresses when he wandered into the store a few months ago. But we were waiting for a sale. One of the store managers, Daryl, walked us through our options and created a quote for us both before the sale and then later when we felt ready to make the purchase and there was a promotion going (Labor Day). As we were leaving the store, my son said, "I really liked that guy who helped us!" Because he was so nice and really listened to him even though he's a kiddo. Now that the mattress has arrived and he's slept on it for a few days, we can happily confirm that it was the right choice. And bonus: There was almost no new product odor (sometimes things off-gas and it can feel like you're sitting in a chemical for a while, but that was not the case for our mattress). Yay! Buying a mattress, at least for me, can be a bit of a hassle/stressful process, but I didn't experience any of that when I decided to buy through Purple. I went to the Bay Street Emeryville store and Daryl (store manager) helped me try out and purchase a Restore Hybrid mattress during their Memorial Day sale. I can say that I felt very comfortable and taken care of throughout the whole process; Daryl helped me understand exactly what I was buying, how much I was actually spending, and the options I had to deliver my mattress (and return it, if I needed to). I ended up taking the mattress home myself from the store the same day I bought it. Thank you to Daryl for making the whole process simple and comfortable. I am very happy so far with my Purple Restore Hybrid mattress; I just try not to think about how much I spent for it, especially if you consider you can basically buy a budget $400-500 bed every couple years for a whole decade before you equal the purchase price of the Purple mattress. If price is the biggest factor for you, then Purple probably isn't your choice, and that would make total sense to me. But if you're buying solely based on how the bed feels, then Purple is definitely worth considering. read more

The store is thoughtfully put together - a lot of space so it's not overstimulating, perfectly neat and clean (I'm talking spotless), hand sanitizer at each bed/area, and pillow covers so you can try their pillows without rubbing your face where everyone else did too. Gabriel made our experience super enjoyable. We were really excited to get the Purple mattress and their amazing pillows. There was a helpful and detail-oriented associate (unfortunately, I didn't catch her name) who patiently explained the features of different mattresses. When we were ready to make a decision, we inquired about the discounts. They informed us that there was a 10% sale for healthcare professionals. The associate clearly explained what the final cost would be. My wife didn't have her work ID with her, but she provided a picture of her medical license and work ID instead. However, Mr. James, who claimed to be a senior staff member, refused to accept these as proof, which was quite disappointing after spending so much time in the store. Flexibility is crucial in business, but Mr. James's response showed a lack of common sense. He had all the necessary identification in front of him--a driver's license, medical license, and work ID photo--yet he still refused to honor the discount. It's frustrating when someone like him, working in a store with great products and customers ready to buy, can ruin what should have been a perfect experience. read more

I especially noticed that Melvin was quick to admit what he didn't know, a sometimes rare quality in a salesperson. Felt like I was just talking to a good friend. Anna even remembered my name coming back in the next day. I can't believe Emeryville's sales tax rate is 10.5%. That's obscene. We wound up paying $100 more (in taxes) for the privilege to take it home ourselves than it would have cost with white glove delivery a week later. Feb 9: Order custom cover for my car seat cushion. 4-6 weeks estimated for delivery. 7 weeks later: I call store for order status. Manager says he will call me back in three days after talking to customer service (out for holiday weekend). April 3: No phone call from manager. I call and get employee, who conferences me into a call to customer service. On phone for 45 minutes, while customer service researches. They get back on the call to say that Purple.com has no involvement with orders placed in the store, we need to talk to the manager of the store, who is not in. April 4: I call and get the manager, who says he will check in with Retail Ops. April 5: Manager calls me, to give me FedEx number for the order. April 7: I receive the cover, which, unlike the original, worn-out cover, is much larger than the cushion and looks like a floppy sack. Well, Fed Ex at least did a great job! We came in without having much expectations and found out it's Memorial Day weekend sale! As we walked in Gabriel warmly greeted us and asked us what kind of bed we were looking for. We knew we wanted a firm bed and he took us on a journey. He showed us each bed and gave us break downs of what material it was made, which ones were new & lastly showed us the luxurious ones. We definitely fell in love with the luxurious one but it wasn't within the budget my partner and I had set. We spoke to Gabriel a bit more and went over the bed frames and its features.
