We have been looking for a new sofa for a long time (over 6 months). We stopped by many shops and many custom sofas. We happened to see Alpha Design when we were looking at another nearby furniture store. Hans was very relaxed, but able to answer any questions we had. The prices are very reasonable and there are so many choices of sofa and chair styles and fabrics! We ended up really liking a floor model and were able to save by buying a floor model. We didn't like the legs and he was able to change that. We also saw a chair we liked and also bought that floor model. We couldn't believe our luck. Hans is a great. If you're looking for a new couch/chair, please please consider working with Hans from Alpha Design. You'll be very thankful that you did everytime you sit on it! I wanted a chair for my lounge room that matched my specific design style and needs (colorful, deep + soft seat, made with performance fabric, and good quality). I checked online for options and went to multiple big box stores, and couldn't find anything that I liked. So I decided to go the custom route and stopped by Alpha Design to see what options they had. First, their selection was impressive. I could have spent hours looking through the different chairs, fabrics and colors that they had - there was something for everyone's taste. Second, I really appreciated Hans' knowledge and customer service. He helped me pick out a great fabric when I explained what I was looking for, advised me on the right cushion firmness to choose, and was overall extremely kind + knowledgable. The price of the chair was very reasonable - lower than a similar Room and Board option, but with the same level of quality and a much shorter lead time. When the chair was ready, we hit a snag with getting it into my home due to its size. The delivery men were extremely lovely, going over and beyond to get it in. Hans called me to check in after the snag, and then again after delivery to make sure everything was good and I was happy with the chair. Excellent customer service from everyone involved. I've had the chair for a few months now, and I adore it. It's absolutely gorgeous and so well-made and comfy, to the point that I actually use it more than any other chair in the house haha. This review is long, long overdue! We originally purchased our sofa back in 2016, with custom dimensions, to fit a specific spot in our home. Hans was super helpful, willing to work with us to get a final product we loved and with a price comparable to that of a standard sofa from a corporate retailer. Fast forward 6.5 years, multiple young children and a pandemic later - our sofa had seen quite a bit of wear and tear, and I reached out to Hans to see if we could get the missing buttons replaced on our tufted cushions. Knowing we had purchased this sofa from him originally, he was able to pull up our receipt and had all the missing buttons fixed/replaced for us, free of charge. He truly went above and beyond to make the whole experience relatively seamless and hassle-free. None really had the perfect sofa or they'd take 6 months for it to be made in China and sent over. Finally decided to trust Yelp and check out Alpha Design. They're on the busy intersection of University and San Pablo but they have parking behind the store on the university side. Hans is, as all the other reviews attest, amazing. We found the perfect design, he let us customize the fabric, the cushion thickness, the cushion materials, the stitching, and even the height of the legs. And what was more amazing, he has them made in SoCal and so it only took 10 days from ordering to when it arrived in our house. He also had cushions made for the armchair in our house so it matches with the sofa. I'm fairly sensitive to toxic outgassing and the sofa and armchair were usable from day one. Hans and his store Alpha Design might be the only business on yelp that has the most 5 star ratings I've ever seen. This is someone who has found their calling in life and consistently delivered. His custom materials, his flexibility, his ability to make and keep his word go above and beyond. We needed a new sofa and for our new home in Oakland and we leave clear across the other side of the country. We like good quality and wanted to support a local furniture maker. First know that Hans has every style and configuration desired, even if it's not on the floor. He has a variety of soft and firm cushions. He has a variety of colors and fabrics. And he most always has floor models for $500 (more or less) off. We ended up going with a floor model.and we love it. We needed a pullout bed or so we thought. Hans has options there too. A basic pullout, a luxe pullout comparably in quality to our actual mattress and then he has these ottomans that can attach which is what we went for, converting our sofa into a queen bed. Who has all that? At the last minute, Hans accommodated our desire to change the color of the ottoman- free of charge. He worked with our crazy timeline and with us being so far away. This store is located on a great block with plenty of parking. We stopped in one day to browse, then compared the sofa we liked to those available online and at other stores. Ultimately, it was clear that the merch here is of superior quality at a great price. The sofa that caught our eye on the first visit was available at a discount since it was the floor model, making it even cheaper. The customer service is outstanding!!!! No pressure, laid back, the products speak for themselves! The owner and his assistant hand delivered the couch the following day, carried it up to our second floor apartment, and even took our old couch away. Basically, shopping for a couch can be a nightmare. You either get bed bugs from a frankly boring colored thrift store couch (true story), a numb butt from an IKEA couch, largely ignored by the associates at Pottery Barn because apparently you don't look like you are old enough to buy a couch from them (that won't come for three months anyway...), or faced to choose between uncomfortable color or comfy boredom in beige. Basically I didn't have a couch for several months after numerous roadblocks to furniture success, and then I got the teal colored apartment sofa of my dreams from Alpha Design. I chose everything about it, all fabrics were the same price, they didn't pressure me at all, and then delivered it into my tiny little studio themselves at no charge. Awesome. I feel like their ridiculous furniture in the window doesn't do them justice. My couch looks modern and fun without being tacky and is comfy after owning it for about a year. It is not a solid piece of furniture (the outside back and sides aren't filled, the fabric is just taut), but that doesn't bother me. Love our chaise lounge chair from Alpha! We had a very specific request: no arms, custom length, and custom width, that needed to fit a specific corner of our apartment, and we got exactly what we wanted here! Hans helped walk us through multiple options while also helping us pick the best price for what we were looking for. For example, making sofas shorter is cheaper than making them longer, etc. Hans was very personable and easy to talk to. Not pushy at all and let us browse or helped us as needed. It was a wonderful buying experience. We had gone in a few times before we were ready to purchase, and it was less expensive than I thought it would be for custom furniture! Honestly it's about the same price as a regular furniture store, but better because you can make custom measurements! The chaise was delivered within 2 weeks too, so we didn't have to wait long at all! Especially during a time when a lot of other furniture stores were back ordered. What does someone who "seriously looks like they are there to buy a sofa" look like? Every person who walks through your door should be treated like they are seriously there to buy a sofa. A simple "welcome to our store, I will be right with you" would have sufficed. Also, the fact that you stated the salesperson was in the middle of an expensive sale is insulting. I purchased an expensive custom sofa from another store after being completely ignored in your store. Looks can be deceiving. My wife and I spent at least 3 months shopping for a new sectional. We visited several stores well known name brand stores in the Bay Area. We were looking for a specific size and style in our sectional and none of the stores had exactly what we wanted. Out of curiosity, I did a yelp search for "custom furniture" and Alpha Design popped up. We visited showroom in Berkeley that weekend and were greeted by Hans. Hans is quite a character. He's a small business owner at heart. When you walk in, you'll typically see a tv in the back playing various live concerts from his dvd collection. He's very friendly and was patient with all of our questions. He's not pushy at all. In fact, we didn't even make a purchase on our first visit. Weeks later, we came back to make a purchase. Hands once again greeted us and helped us design a custom sectional based off the popular Oliver model they had on display. We chose the dimensions, fabric, cushion firmness, legs, leg height and of course color. You'd think with all of this customization, the price would be expensive. Our final price was actually less than what you'd pay for at Room and Board or Crate and Barrel. Except that our sofa was one of a kind! Purchasing a sofa from Alpha Design has been one of our best buying experiences ever. The customer service you get is second to none. There is an enormous range of couches to fit nearly anyone's preferred style, and there is a huge diversity of colors, fabrics, and options with regards to customization. To top it off, this is all at a very fair price that can't really be beat elsewhere. Unlike with most other furniture stores, there's no hidden fees or constant attempts to upcharge you. It's all a very simple process. But what makes Alpha Design really something special is Hans. Hans is incredibly kind and eager to help find (or design!) the best couch that suits your needs. We had a truly unfortunate situation where our favorite couch didn't fit in our doorway. In no time at all, Hans had a dozen new ideas for how we could customize the couch to better suit our home while still matching our preferred styles. Staff is racist at this establishment. Please do not give them your service. I never usually post reviews for businesses, but the horrible experience I had with this business pushed me to want to warn others. I am a young black woman, and when I arrived at the store, I pulled into one of the parking spots designated for customers. Before getting out of my car to come in, I was answering a few text messages on my phone when a staff from the store came up to my car and asked me if I was a customer. When I said yes and told her I was on my way in, she went on to tell me that I had 10 minutes to get out of my car and come into the store. Not even a full 60 seconds later, she was back at my car window harassing me, yelling at me, and telling me that I needed to leave. She stood at my car with her dog and refused to leave until I pulled off. I didn't even get to step foot in the store to actually see the furniture, but this treatment was extremely uncalled for. She assumed that because I am black, there was no way I could possibly be a potential customer (I cannot possibly think of any other reason for this treatment; I'm sure if I wasn't black, I would've received the benefit of the doubt). I just recently moved into the neighborhood and was looking to support a local business to furnish my apartment, but I would not recommend giving them your service. If you truly believe Black Lives Matter, you should not shop here. RESPONSE TO HANS: I want to first note that in such a long response, there is no apology for the way I was treated at your establishment. But here are some other issues I have with your response: 1. Your employee did not in fact approach me from the back of my vehicle. She pulled up next to me in her own vehicle first, looked into my non-tinted windows, and then decided to approach me. She knew exactly what I looked like and what race I am when she decided to do that. 2. It is a shame that all of your customers aren't as "well-respected" as the one you were awaiting (this seems to be a theme in a few of your negative reviews). If they were so well-respected, why didn't your employee move her own vehicle out of your private spot reserved for customers so that they could have it? Why was I, a potential customer, asked to move, when there were other reserved spots still available? 3. It is very telling that you feel that me recounting my experience as a black woman on a public platform is inciting racial hatred. I promise you that no one else is more exhausted of racial hatred than black Americans. It is even more telling that you believe that having black friends and employees makes you or your employee incapable of racism, even if it was implicit bias. I'd recommend perhaps reading a copy of Robin DiAngelo's White Fragility to learn more. Lastly, it is even MORE telling that you are bringing up supporting the local "African American" community with food and money, generalizing them as if they are all so poor, malnourished, and in need of your donations (maybe this is why it was assumed that I couldn't possibly be a potential customer). Do you offer these acts of community service just so that you can be able to justify yourself as a non-racist in moments like these? It's okay to sometimes be in the wrong, but to not own up to it is much worse. The more racially-conscious people reading your response will also note the irony of you reporting a me as a black woman to the police and threatening to take legal action for simply sharing my experience, which is indeed the purpose of Yelp. More than anything, I hope you can use this as a learning opportunity to really make sure that your employees are treating all of your potential customers with dignity and respect. We were in search of comfortable couch in a reasonable price range and Alpha Design checked all of the boxes. Hans walked us through each option in the store and answered all of our questions. Why I did not go to them sooner- not sure. We had talked about getting a new couch for about 2 years but let it go and it was getting ratty. But because our cat peed all over our old couch we finally looked around to get a new one! The process was easy- and a great deal also. We needed a couch to fit our quirky space. We went to this store and spoke with Hans, the owner, who was friendly and accommodating...at first. We ordered a couch eleven weeks ago. It was initially delivered a week after he said it would be ready...okay, no big deal. On delivery day, it didn't arrive when he said it would...a few phone calls and some patience, and it arrived. Okay, again, no big deal. It arrived and the cushions were wrong - not what we had ordered and paid for. This is where the real fun began. The delivery guys called Hans to report that the cushions were wrong; I spoke with him and he said he'd fix it. Great! Days go by, and we hear nothing. I call him; he hasn't ordered the correct cushions, and now says he needs to come measure for them. Okay. A few days later he comes, measures in what looks like a haphazard way, asks if we're *sure* we want the cushions we agreed on and paid for, acts put out that we still do, and finally assures us that the new cushions will arrive within a week. Two new cushions arrive two weeks later, after we call multiple times to follow up: one is *mostly* right but he got the measurement wrong by a couple of inches, which is noticeable...the other cushion is way off, not even close. Again, we hear nothing from Hans about how he's going to make this right. Again, we have to call multiple times to see what's happening. In all of these interactions, Hans acts as though it's not his problem to make it right and deliver the couch we ordered and paid for many weeks ago. How do you run a business this way? He eventually assures us that the final cushion will arrive within two weeks. Two and a half weeks go by with no call, no news. We call and he says it will *definitely* be here within another week, and he promises he'll call us to follow up. Again, he misses his deadline, and again - he does not call to let us know what's happening. We call *again* and he says it will be another week. When we express our frustration, he says that we have *a* couch, so we shouldn't be frustrated. !!! We STILL don't have the couch that we bought ELEVEN weeks ago. I would never, ever recommend this business to anyone unless they REALLY love the experience of eternal frustration. read more

If I could give Alpha and the wonderful sales manager / leader Hans 10 stars I would. My wife and I recently bought a sofa set from Alpha. Hans was so patient and helpful and thoughtful as we figured out what we needed. Given travel and other commitments we had a hard time finding a delivery window. Hans was so patient and flexible as it took us a while to find a good time. After we got the sofas we realized we messed up - we'd forgotten to confirm with Hans that the large sofa would have a sleeper built in. A sleeper sofa was crucial. We were kicking ourselves, thinking we'd messed up and nothing could be done. But one phone call to Hans saved the day. He simply arranged to have the sofa picked up, sent back to the factory, and to have a sleeper installed. Major problem solved. If you're in the market for furniture look no further than Alpha Design and Hans. My new sectional is beautiful, custom designed by me and Hans got it to me in two weeks! unbelievable. Hans is a very nice, honest man and my husband and I were happy to spend our money at his local, small business. We got exactly what we wanted for way less than Pottery Barn or Crate and Barrel. Best possible experience. Best customer service. Best prices. Best product. Infinite options for customizing. I spent 6 months off and on looking for a couch. I went to Decorium & priced out a couch with a few modifications. They wanted TWICE as much as Alpha for a couch of similar quality. Because I was under the impression Love Sac was the most customizable couch out there I was an inch from buying a $5000 couch from them despite their crappy customer service and single armrest option. I thought the ability to do full couch cover/upholstery replacement was genius until I discovered it cost min $3000 unless you get the crappiest, tackiest fabrics they have. Might as well buy another friggin couch for that price. I'm a perfectionist. I specked out every last detail possible, floor to seat length, seat to armrest, seat depth, fabric, cushion thickness, seat thickness plus some other shit I can't remember. Hans and the young lady that works there were patient with every bit of it. Hans even offered creative solutions on how to achieve certain details I wanted for less money. I don't recall them ever saying, "we can't do that" or "we can't get it in that color" or all the other "nos" I got everywhere else. These 2 were amazingly helpful, polite and professional. There is no reason whatsoever for me to take my business to a big furniture chain over this fine small business. I'm never going anywhere else. read more
