I strolled over for a reformer class today and was lucky enough to get a private class (because the studio *just* opened about a week ago and the classes have not yet filled up). I doubt one will be able to draw on that kind of luck for long. Véronique is a skillful and thoughtful instructor, and it was a pleasure having her put me through my paces on the reformer. As for the studio (a sunny corner one block of Haight street that has been home to an Auntie Pasta [remember that place??], a web design firm, and most recently, an architectural office) it's been beautifully renovated. It's bright, clean, well organized, and all the equipment is brand-spanking new. Soulful Pilates gest 4 stars for awesomeness, and a one-star bonus for being so close to my house.

Now I'm able to do moves I wasn't able to do when I started. Their instructions are easy to follow in terms of where we should/shouldn't be feeling the muscle activation, how to know if we're doing the moves correctly or wrong, and how we should be breathing. It's a small class and instructors go around giving hands on and verbal form corrections that really click and I can feel the difference. I also realized I had an anterior pelvic tilt which has noticeably gotten better and my lower back pain went away completely. My body has transformed so much already within 3 months and I'm excited for how much more it's going to change in the next year. I really hope this place is open forever and selfishly hope all the instructors don't move away or anything like that haha

But what truly stood out to me was the instructor. The amount of knowledge she has is incredible. She corrected my form throughout the entire class -- which I absolutely LOVED. Honestly, who wants to pay for a class just to do movements incorrectly and not actually learn anything? For the first time, I truly felt my muscles working the way they're supposed to. The connection between core engagement and breathing was something I had never experienced before in my life. I left feeling challenged, stronger, and so much more aware of my body. You can tell she genuinely has the knowledge, cares about teaching proper form and helping students improve, no matter their level. It made such a difference in the quality of the class. Thank you so much to the instructor for such an incredible experience!

Unfortunately, the studio has a noticeable odor at times, which makes it difficult to fully relax and enjoy the class. Cleanliness and air quality are especially important in a hot yoga environment, so this stood out. Additionally, while I respect the experience of the instructors, a lot of classes felt weighed down by negative energy. A yoga space should feel uplifting and supportive, but at times it came across as tense rather than encouraging. Bringing in young instructors who project more positive, fresh, and motivating energy could really enhance the overall atmosphere. I believe this place has potential, but a few changes could make a big difference in how students feel during and after class.

The…read morestudio is located in Downtown San Mateo which is a little far from where we live, but figured we would try an introductory class anyway to see how we liked it. Olivia was friendly and knowledgeable. She is a professional ballet dancer. She and her husband, Andre own the studio. We enjoyed our first class and signed up for a package of 20 semi-private sessions with her that she said we could share, which meant 10 sessions together. The studio is small and a bit dated. The gyrotronics and pilates machines were also a bit old, but Olivia was patient and a good teacher in walking us through how to use them. She inquired about our goals and also asked if we have any body issues we wanted to work on. The sessions went well for the first couple of months. Then through a series of having to reschedule due to Olivia's travel schedule or work conflicts on our end, we were unable go for a few weeks. When we picked up and started going again, our planned vacation came up. We informed Olivia about this in advance but she must've have forgotten. We got a text from her during our vacation asking us to come in for a session and told her we wouldn't be back for a week. She then texted that our package expires within three months of purchase. She did not provide us with this disclaimer when she happily accepted our Paypal payment of $1,075. This is also not explicitly stated on their website. We came back from our vacation and never heard from her again. We had about three classes left for each of us and just accepted it as sunk cost. As much as we enjoyed our classes with Olivia, she didn't seem to want to keep us as continuing clients so we will just take our business elsewhere.

They have these flat screens all over the walls where they had a video explaining the T zone and other pertinent parts of pilates. The workout was 30 minutes and I have to say it went from a slow start to escalating quite quickly. I was surprised when they mentioned to put on all the springs when we moved to our legs and my knees and calves were burning. I did appreciate all three coaches walking around and checking everyone's forms to make sure everyone looked good! The vibes were quite nice. I'm still intrigued by the fact that they use tvs and there was no timer on each exercise. They have a huge deal going on for intro offers where you get 6 reformer classes for $60 which is extremely unheard of. Highly recommend this studio! The waiting area is a bit small, but looks clean and well-maintained. It does get a bit crowded though if it's busy. Studio itself has 12 machines and tons of screens everywhere. The routine is played on the screen and the instructor focuses on adjusting the clients. It's a little different than what I'm used to - typically there aren't screens and the instructor is both leading the class and simultaneously offering adjustments. I do wish the screens would show how long you're in the move for. It only starts counting down after 20 seconds, but I want to know how long I need to plan to suffer for!

My journey with my health and strength has waxed and waned over the years, adjusting and adapting to changes in my body, or due to injury. The owner, Pattie, really lives her yogic teachings and is exceptionally kind and gracious. What's also really great is that she offers in person classes in addition to virtual-- the doors and windows of the studio are left open so masks are optional. Normally she offers outdoor classes as well but has stopped due to the arrival of more wintry weather (however there are still a few weekly outdoor classes with Olga). Olga and Grace are wonderful instructors as well-- both really get you in a good flow and you'll be buzzing with high vibes afterwards. Another student tried to tell Olga that she felt pain in some of the poses and Olga told her to try to remember which poses it was and remind her at the end of class. Afterwords, Olga didn't say one word to any of the students except to remind one woman to register.
