But unfortunately, the experience with their policy and customer support has been frustrating enough that I'm seriously reconsidering coming back. I've been dealing with a prolonged illness, and per their own policy, clients with symptoms are not allowed to attend class (which I fully respect). But when I reached out to explain my situation, I was only given a two-week extension -- no flexibility, no empathy, just a firm deadline. When I tried to use the remaining classes before expiration, I did not show up due to a worsening cough at the day of class-- again, trying to be responsible and follow their rules. I then received a late cancel/no show warning email, which said I'd normally be charged an extra $15 fee on top of the class I already paid for, just for being too sick to attend. Although the fee was waived this time, the tone of the message and the overall approach felt more like a punishment system than a client-centered one. The policy is confusing, rigid, and completely lacking in support for people dealing with health issues. It left me feeling discouraged and unwelcome -- not something I expect from a wellness studio.

They don't have a reception area so I was a little lost walking in but I just followed what everyone else was doing. The workout itself was fine. Compared to the classes I took in the past I didn't find the instructor to be helpful. When I got home I got an email about my bill from Pilates V which was a charge for grip socks which I did not purchase. I ended up reaching out to management for a refund. There was a couple back and forth with the emails where I had to reach out for updates. It did become a bit frustrating because I didn't talk to the instructor at all but was told that the instructor said it was me that purchased. In the end I received my refund which I was thankful for however I feel like this could have been solved in a more efficient way. I ended up not using the rest of the Groupon classes but it's a loss I would rather take than take more classes.

The owner, Pattie, really lives her yogic teachings and is exceptionally kind and gracious. She also leads fantastic classes that are the perfect mix of physical challenge and spiritual reflection/meditation. What's also really great is that she offers in person classes in addition to virtual-- the doors and windows of the studio are left open so masks are optional. Normally she offers outdoor classes as well but has stopped due to the arrival of more wintry weather (however there are still a few weekly outdoor classes with Olga). Olga and Grace are wonderful instructors as well-- both really get you in a good flow and you'll be buzzing with high vibes afterwards. I've taken far more classes with Grace, who is one of the sweetest, most skilled instructors I've found and really takes the time to make sure everyone has proper alignment. She takes everyone's personal needs and limitations into account yet really motivates you to push yourself farther than you thought you could go. At the moment she is only offering virtual classes. Overall this is just such a warm, welcoming studio with very intimate classes that span all levels of ability. I cherish it for what it has done for my physical and mental health!

I stood outside calling (along with 2 other patrons) for 10 mins. When Olga arrived the only thing she said was "are you registered?" No introduction of herself or the practice, no questions about my experience, goals, limitations, etc. I was not asked for proof of vaccination. The class was disjointed and confusing, and transitions were awkward. No forecasting poses, no breath engagement, no explanation of proper form or alignment. Olga taught to the camera or the mirror the whole time (I was not told we'd be on camera or recorded).. Another student tried to tell Olga that she felt pain in some of the poses and Olga told her to try to remember which poses it was and remind her at the end of class. Afterwords, Olga didn't say one word to any of the students except to remind one woman to register.

I really enjoy the detailed instruction tailored to my physical ability and feel as though I am progressing each class. I feel so much stronger and flexible and really love my weekly sessions. I also absolutely love the music played here - always upbeat and dancey.

My hubby's and my journey to give pilates a try landed us at Studio East West with Olivia. The…read morestudio is located in Downtown San Mateo which is a little far from where we live, but figured we would try an introductory class anyway to see how we liked it. Olivia was friendly and knowledgeable. She is a professional ballet dancer. She and her husband, Andre own the studio. We enjoyed our first class and signed up for a package of 20 semi-private sessions with her that she said we could share, which meant 10 sessions together. The studio is small and a bit dated. The gyrotronics and pilates machines were also a bit old, but Olivia was patient and a good teacher in walking us through how to use them. She inquired about our goals and also asked if we have any body issues we wanted to work on. The sessions went well for the first couple of months. Then through a series of having to reschedule due to Olivia's travel schedule or work conflicts on our end, we were unable go for a few weeks. When we picked up and started going again, our planned vacation came up. We informed Olivia about this in advance but she must've have forgotten. We got a text from her during our vacation asking us to come in for a session and told her we wouldn't be back for a week. She then texted that our package expires within three months of purchase. She did not provide us with this disclaimer when she happily accepted our Paypal payment of $1,075. This is also not explicitly stated on their website. We came back from our vacation and never heard from her again. We had about three classes left for each of us and just accepted it as sunk cost. As much as we enjoyed our classes with Olivia, she didn't seem to want to keep us as continuing clients so we will just take our business elsewhere.

Unfortunately, the studio has a noticeable odor at times, which makes it difficult to fully relax and enjoy the class. Cleanliness and air quality are especially important in a hot yoga environment, so this stood out. Additionally, while I respect the experience of the instructors, a lot of classes felt weighed down by negative energy. A yoga space should feel uplifting and supportive, but at times it came across as tense rather than encouraging. Bringing in young instructors who project more positive, fresh, and motivating energy could really enhance the overall atmosphere. I believe this place has potential, but a few changes could make a big difference in how students feel during and after class.

Lala worked with me to gently build my strength around my injury, and within a few months my pain was so much improved. She is a very intuitive and thoughtful trainer. Every week I get a new, customized workout, and I do things I never thought were possible with my injuries. I sail competitively and that puts a huge strain on my body. It's great knowing Lala is always there to help put me back together again. I highly recommend her for Pilates and personal training.

I originally sought Valerie's help for right shoulder pain from doing my art work. The true reason for my pain, however, was muscle weakness and imbalances, which I had ignored for decades. By July 2024, my shoulder was pain-free. As I continued to increase my activity, Lala was always spot on with helping me with whatever other issues emerged. I religiously followed the exercises that she suggested. Rather than a rigid routine, she taught me how to strategically select "a la carte" from my menu of mobility, strength, and core exercises. Today, my shoulder pain is long gone. My mobility is much better: I can raise my arms and stretch without any hitches or weakness. When I look in the mirror, my shoulders are even for the first time in 20 years. Most importantly, I feel empowered to know how to respond to small issues that may come up. It feels good to be so much stronger and to be able to be active again!

However I thought their practices around the fee structure were extremely shady. First of all, for a community center you charge a crazy amount. It's meant to be accessible and not an elite club which is what this has turned into. A name change should be well in order if they're not serving the community they belong to. Please note they are a non profit organization. Secondly they will charge you an arm and a leg for classes and membership, they will update your pricing and not give you notice. I think the fact that they don't list their prices on their website are true testament to my statement. I dropped my membership as it stopped being worth the $500 I was paying for me and the kids per month (only one of my kids was doing swim lessons) their swim classes helped for a little and then the teachers were replaced with new ones who didn't care much about the students. I ended up quitting and unless their pricing is more transparent and less elitist I'd rather drive a little bit longer.

Now I'm able to do moves I wasn't able to do when I started. Their instructions are easy to follow in terms of where we should/shouldn't be feeling the muscle activation, how to know if we're doing the moves correctly or wrong, and how we should be breathing. It's a small class and instructors go around giving hands on and verbal form corrections that really click and I can feel the difference. I also realized I had an anterior pelvic tilt which has noticeably gotten better and my lower back pain went away completely. My body has transformed so much already within 3 months and I'm excited for how much more it's going to change in the next year. I really hope this place is open forever and selfishly hope all the instructors don't move away or anything like that haha

But what truly stood out to me was the instructor. The amount of knowledge she has is incredible. She corrected my form throughout the entire class -- which I absolutely LOVED. Honestly, who wants to pay for a class just to do movements incorrectly and not actually learn anything? For the first time, I truly felt my muscles working the way they're supposed to. The connection between core engagement and breathing was something I had never experienced before in my life. I left feeling challenged, stronger, and so much more aware of my body. You can tell she genuinely has the knowledge, cares about teaching proper form and helping students improve, no matter their level. It made such a difference in the quality of the class. Thank you so much to the instructor for such an incredible experience!
