Plenty of fun runs, and a decent amount of high speed lifts. The layout is a bit funky with some solid traversing and long runouts but overall still a good spot. We stayed in the village. Not much food that I know of in the village so we are down in the town of Durango. Had free days from a season pass from a partner resort so used those to my advantage. Great views and a pretty drive! In the words of the terminator, "I'll be back."

The alpine slide has changed dramatically in the past few years (we used to be able to get buy one get one coupons for 5 bucks here, but now that tickets are $15 each for a single ride... that's a different story). We check in at 12.30AM, the front desk not able to find 2 of our reservation (out of 3)…read more Nice front desk clerk quite helpful, he finally got us those two rooms that was not found in their system. we went to the room, it was not ready, was not tidy up, dirty, bed sheet was already used back to front desk at 1 Am, he can not figure out to get us other rooms and he promise not to charge those three rooms , we left and got other hotel in downtown at almost 2 AM now , they still charge my CC and arguing that we check in the hotel, which is true and they do not have record when we left and did not used the room Parking extremely difficult, small parking space, all reserved and this is very large condo complex (Time share I guess) Rate was very check ($ 120 something ) compare to other hotel in Durango (We move other hotel at $ 200 ++) but service is horrible, their reservation system is mess up and totally stupid and un apologetic management Stupid people manage this property, do not stay here

Apparently the town was also getting crushed (servers, bartenders, etc) by this. SOME sort of news/press release would have saved countless people thousands of dollars. Previously I gave 5*because it is a gorgeous resort, lush skiing, absolutely magnificent views worthy of the hikes. Everyone in old town was so warm and welcoming. What a great experience for people with little to no experience in the backcountry! I was nervous…read moreabout the avalanches, nervous about the terrain, just everything in general as we have never gone backcountry skiing but the whole operation ran very smoothly and we loved both days we went! They start by grouping people by activity level and aggressiveness desired, we fell into moderate for both. Different people in the our group in each but same awesome guide, shoutout to Cameron!! There's only one lift but the bus system and way they separate the groups is very efficient. The runs are amazingg and the I highly recommend the heli-drops. The next time we go back, we're definitely doing a 3 or 6 pack instead of just the one. The hiking is...brutal, at that elevation and when your legs are already tiring from going down the mountain, it was difficult for me. And I would consider myself a fairly fit person coming from Denver so already at a higher altitude to begin with. The second day seemed slightly easier than the first. The mountain is amazing, the town is adorable. As someone who wants to go in the backcountry but slightly nervous going without an expert, I really loved my experience. Our guide was so knowledgeable, asked for our preferences, and was super patient with me which I appreciated! I can't wait to go back!

I'm really surprised there are no reviews yet for Hesperus! It really is a great little ski area…read more No frills, a handful of slopes with a single ski lift and a basic shop/concessions. While some may think this a negative, I think it's hugely positive! The few times I've been, there is never really a crowd and the staff are so friendly. This is particularly a positive for a beginner snowboarder like me! The same company that owns Purgatory also recently bought Hesperus, so you can be assured you're skiing/boarding at a quality ski area. When you want more of a low-key day skiing or boarding, Hesperus is a great choice. They also have tubing and offer lessons and equipment rentals. They are also significantly cheaper than Purgatory.

We chose to drive the long drive to Silverton (from Denver) expressly for the snowcat trip with this group, rather than staying closer to the front range of Colorado. The mountain was pretty much empty with fresh untracked powder. My only regret is that the day came to an end. To quote my 17 yo daughter, "It was pretty dang epic bro!"
