Not much food that I know of in the village so we are down in the town of Durango. Had free days from a season pass from a partner resort so used those to my advantage. Didn't try the zipline, but didn't seem worth it based on the length. The inferno mountain coaster is an amazing addition, although we waited in line for 45 min for it. The alpine slide has changed dramatically in the past few years (we used to be able to get buy one get one coupons for 5 bucks here, but now that tickets are $15 each for a single ride... that's a different story). It is about an hour almost into Durango so you should get what you need before heading up to the resort. The country store down the road is over priced because of supply and demand. They are the only place you're going to get eggs and bacon to cook so they are willing to charge an arm and a leg for it. Just a tip to avoid paying high fees when you don't know how far the resort is up the canyon! There is a gas station as well so a couple of things nearby you can get without making the trek all the way down to Durango. I love Durango and wish I got to spend more time there though!

Apparently the town was also getting crushed (servers, bartenders, etc) by this. SOME sort of news/press release would have saved countless people thousands of dollars. Previously I gave 5*because it is a gorgeous resort, lush skiing, absolutely magnificent views worthy of the hikes. Everyone in old town was so warm and welcoming. I was nervous…read moreabout the avalanches, nervous about the terrain, just everything in general as we have never gone backcountry skiing but the whole operation ran very smoothly and we loved both days we went! They start by grouping people by activity level and aggressiveness desired, we fell into moderate for both. Different people in the our group in each but same awesome guide, shoutout to Cameron!! There's only one lift but the bus system and way they separate the groups is very efficient. The runs are amazingg and the I highly recommend the heli-drops. The next time we go back, we're definitely doing a 3 or 6 pack instead of just the one. The hiking is...brutal, at that elevation and when your legs are already tiring from going down the mountain, it was difficult for me. And I would consider myself a fairly fit person coming from Denver so already at a higher altitude to begin with. The second day seemed slightly easier than the first. The mountain is amazing, the town is adorable. As someone who wants to go in the backcountry but slightly nervous going without an expert, I really loved my experience. Our guide was so knowledgeable, asked for our preferences, and was super patient with me which I appreciated! I can't wait to go back!

I'm really surprised there are no reviews yet for Hesperus! It really is a great little ski area…read more No frills, a handful of slopes with a single ski lift and a basic shop/concessions. While some may think this a negative, I think it's hugely positive! The few times I've been, there is never really a crowd and the staff are so friendly. This is particularly a positive for a beginner snowboarder like me! The same company that owns Purgatory also recently bought Hesperus, so you can be assured you're skiing/boarding at a quality ski area. When you want more of a low-key day skiing or boarding, Hesperus is a great choice. They also have tubing and offer lessons and equipment rentals. They are also significantly cheaper than Purgatory.

We chose to drive the long drive to Silverton (from Denver) expressly for the snowcat trip with this group, rather than staying closer to the front range of Colorado. The mountain was pretty much empty with fresh untracked powder. My only regret is that the day came to an end. To quote my 17 yo daughter, "It was pretty dang epic bro!"

The runs aren't that great, but hey - at least you can ski here. My main problem with this resort is with the owners / management. They recently started to offer "local discount days", which is awesome, but they attach strings to it. You HAVE to present a coupon from the newspaper for EACH person buying a ticket... So, you can be from out of town, present the coupon, and get the discount, which I liked since I'm from Texas. However, my friends who were local did not have the coupon, but had driver's licenses and Fort Lewis College student Id's and they were refused the local price. One of my friends even had her electric bill, and they still refused to give her the discount. Super lame. I won't be returned to this hill.
