There are so many poke places popping up lately, but Pure is one of a handful of places where I could immediately tell the ingredients are good. They have a sort of formula for success going on--limited proteins, with an abundance of flavor. What I liked: They're not afraid to bring the spice. They've got fish with gochugang, sambal, and more. It's not for the California Roll crowd for sure. I tried a bowl featuring Kahunu Tuna, and I also had some poke nachos. What gives pause: I feel like everything here was made well, but too sweet for my tastes. The Kahunu sauce is tasty, but sweeter than common condiments like eel sauce and perhaps my bowl had too much. But then the chili sauce was too sweet. And even the wasabi cream in the nachos tasted like there was a little added sugar. I think service is great, it's got a decent fast casual atmosphere, and it's worth giving a try for yourself. But I've already got my shortlist of lunchtime seafood spots, and I'm not sure Pure would make the cut. read more

I had dinner here last night with a group of friends. This is an order-at-the-counter place and you get your food immediately, kind of like Chipotle. It was quiet, which made conversation easy. As for the food, I got a Poke Bowl ($12) with one scoop of chiltepin salmon ($2.50), a base of noodles, and lots of veggies on top. Our favorite Poke place in Tucson! In fact, we've eaten poke all over the place, including California, Hawaii and any other state that we are visiting! I still think this is our favorite. I love that they have the wonton chips as a base. You can select multiple bases. Everyone is friendly and online ordering is very easy. We tend to eat in most often but it's so easy to get it to go to. The only area of improvement would be their soda machine. The choices are pretty boring and most of the drinks just aren't good. I've been looking for a good poke place in Tucson. I'm glad I came across Pure Poke and Prep! When you walk in, you order Chipotle-style, where you select your toppings behind the counter as they build it for you. There are various fish options, plain or without marinades. I opted for the plain tuna, a Kahuku tuna, and plain salmon in my three scoop bowl. All of the fish were excellent. Additionally, I loved their variety of toppings. Although they charge for avocado, I enjoyed the maple-soy roasted sweet potatoes and cucumber salad, which are free toppings. I had two downsides to my experience. First, I had some confusion about the sauces. I did not get enough sauce and only got a small plastic sauce container. I requested my sauce on the side but was told they charge per sauce container. I'm still confused by the sauce prices since the sauces seem to be unlimited if you get it in the bowl. Second, I thought the quantity of fish I received was small for what I paid. Although the three scoop poke bowl was enough fish to satisfy me, it was quite pricey. In poke places in California, I could be happy with a one or two scoop poke bowl due to more generous portions. My boyfriend and I love poke bowls, specifically customizable ones. We passed by this place a few times and finally decided to try it. We each got a one-scoop bowl with salmon. We were both disappointed in the serving size. Most poke places in town give you two scoops of fish. Pure Poke only gives you one (and at a higher base price), and it's simply not enough. After my first several bites, I had so much of my bowl left (rice, cucumber, edamame aplenty) with no fish to go with it. The topping options are solid, and I appreciate that you can get seaweed salad for no additional cost. Avocado is extra, which isn't surprising. I had never seen roasted sweet potato as a poke topping before, which sounded interesting but didn't complement the flavors of the bowl in my opinion (I'm sure some people love it, but it's not something I would put on a poke bowl again). The fish tasted great, I just wish there was more of it. The sauces were also good--we tried the spicy mayo, sesame ginger, and house sauce. All were super flavorful. The latter was not too much mayo but close - the flavor melts with the fish however. You can mix your base so I had brown rice (cooked perfectly), noodles (tasty and as oily as it looked) and salad (healthy mixed greens). I added seaweed for a buck and that was worth it but not a must. For the veggies I went for it all and glad I did for later making variations of bites. Not one thing was stale or off-putting. I love poke! I am an avid fan of pure poke I just don't live over here on this side of town anymore but when I am I try to stop by! They have bigger fish cuts than other poke places. They also have different marinades for the fish which is nice! They are really good and they have craft sake and beer! Which is like super awesome considering most poke places don't! I also like their spicy Mayo because it's actually spicy with flavor not just hot burn your mouth. Also their atmosphere is nice and calm with very chill music so it's a nice place to sit and eat. We also did a bowl with tuna and salmon on white rice, then went heavy on the toppings. I really enjoyed their pure delicious sauce which is a citrus soy type. They have quite a few different sauces.
