I found Pure OBGYN online and only read the reviews about the doctors. I usually will visit Yelp to see what the majority of Yelpers are raving -- or not raving about. Therefore, I am currently not aware of any complaints from other users (I'll venture there next) However, I was completely satisfied with my visit. The receptionist was very kind and gave me clear instructions on what they wanted me to do to prepare for my visit. I had filled out medical forms online prior to my visit, but I had to complete an online account once I arrived via iPad. The process wasn't bad, but I would have liked the opportunity to create my account online prior before arriving as well. The office was clean and nice jams were playing as I waited for the next step. My wait was also not long -- maybe about 10-12 mins total. Dr. Tou was extremely kind and professional. Attending doctor visits aren't my favorite, but Dr. Tou made me feel completely comfortable (along with the rest of the staff at St John's Pl) I highly recommend Pure OBGYN for a Women's Wellness exam. I was in and out and I plan to return for other future wellness visits. read more

The first time I visited wasn't the best experience, but I didn't recall the front desk being so cruelly unprofessional until this time. Each individual one working on the day I had my appt needs to be replaced if they expect this center to survive. They set a cold tone for such a personable experience, such as entering parenthood, but furthermore, a doctor evaluating your female parts for its health status. Since going to different OB offices for the last 7 years, this was by far the worst experience, and I will not be stepping foot back in this office. Instead of management or the billing department doing their actual job, they'll have you to call your insurance company for claims they've made on your behalf. The treatment I received was very distasteful, and the professionalism was nonexistent. I'd rather be inconvenienced at this point and travel further, than give my business and healthcare needs to Pure OB. read more

I am truly disturbed by Pure OBGYN's billing practices. Like others have shared, I was charged for procedures that I did not consent to and were not covered by my insurance. I saw Dr. Mbaye (who was very nice and very professional) for my annual well woman visit, which was also my first visit to Pure OBGYN. I told Dr. Mbaye about a couple of minor things I had noticed since my last annual appointment (at a different practice). Apparently this was a mistake, as it prompted her to conduct an abdominal ultrasound, a transvaginal ultrasound, and a "vascular study", none of which were covered by my insurance. I consulted with a close friend of mine who is an OBGYN herself, and she stated unequivocally that these procedures were entirely unnecessary and that without a doubt they were only done to generate money for the practice. I spoke to Olga in the billing department, who directed me to the office manager, Iman. I spoke with Iman who then offered to get on a conference call with me and my insurance company. She and the insurance rep had it out a bit (it was clear the insurance rep could sense the BS, but was unable to do anything about it). Essentially, the call ended with Iman saying her hands were tied, and that I could file a dispute with the insurance company if I wanted... but the insurance rep had already told both of us that nothing could be changed on their end without Pure changing the procedure codes on the bill, which they were unwilling to do. So now I'm stuck paying a $611 bill for an appointment I thought would cost me just my $25 copay. We already live in a country with unjust healthcare coverage - it is so unethical to prey upon patients who are just trying to take care of their health. I really recommend staying away from this practice. UPDATE: A few days after I posted this review here and on Google, I received a call from the office. Iman told me she had 'spoken to upper management' and that 'they were able to offer me a refund for the vascular study' which made up over $300 of the $600+ bill. After I accepted this offer, she asked if I would take down the reviews!!! I said no, but that I would update the reviews to reflect this new part of the story. So now that the refund has been processed, here's the update. Do with it what you will :) read more

I'm a first time patient who was looking for a new Gyno. Upon arrival the office was beautiful, clean and well taken care of. The front desk staff were very warm, friendly and helpful. But that's where my positive feedback stops. I originally had an appointment to see Dr. Tou, who had rave reviews here and on ZocDoc, but unfortunately she was out sick. So instead I was given the option to see Dr. Goncharov. Never again will I see this doctor. He has no bedside manner of which to speak of. He wouldn't make eye contact with me, kept looking at the floor while speaking to me. He also doesn't listen and is quite dismissive. He clearly has a script he runs through and isn't capable of deviating from it to have an actual conversation with a human being seeking counsel. He recommended I get an IUD, instant of oral birth control pills, and that he could implant the IUD today. He was actually pretty aggressive with that recommendation and kept bringing it up even after I declined multiple times. The whole experience was bizarre. I might go back to see Dr. Tou or I may just try to find a practice that doesn't hire doctors like Goncharov. read more

Great office. I saw dr. Chou for my annual exam. Great doctor. Great staff. Great waiting times

I will never return to this practice. I should start by saying that all of the clinicians and ultrasound techs that I worked with were wonderful -- the clinicians were attentive, informed, and great to work with. However, the administrative systems there are a huge mess. It was normal to get multiple calls about some test results and never hear back about others (my partner was brought in for genetic testing and we STILL have never seen the results more than 6 weeks later). This was annoying but fine until I found out that my fetus had tested positive for chromosomal abnormalities and I would have to terminate my pregnancy in the second trimester. My doctor and the administrator I spoke to told me that I would be able to schedule my procedure through the practice, but then the surgical coordinator told me that no one was available and they would have to refer me out. The "referral" process involved a two sentence email from the surgical coordinator listing Planned Parenthood and the names of two hospitals. No phone numbers, no practitioner information, and no information whatsoever about the procedure or next steps. I really can't overstate how overwhelming it was to be told that I would have help and support and then be completely on my own while dealing with a huge personal loss. I got very lucky in that the surgeon I booked with at Mt Sinai was amazing and the office that coordinated my care was very organized and compassionate (a complete contrast with dealing with the surgical coordinator at PureOBGYN who was consistently unhelpful and really cold/checked out). Over the next two weeks while I waited for surgery, I received a number of calls from the office with unnecessary or inaccurate information. First, someone called to follow up on booking my surgery plan, and it took hours out of my day and several follow up calls and emails just to reestablish that the practice couldn't do anything for me. Then, I received a phone call and multiple notices about test results that I had already received and discussed with the doctor over a month ago. It was really painful and frustrating to have to explain over and over again that I was terminating the pregnancy. Additionally, even though I reached out to the surgical coordinator several times (at least two emails and two phone calls) to make sure all my medical records and ultrasounds were faxed to the hospital where I would be having surgery and she guaranteed that my materials had been sent, the ultrasounds I needed were not there on the day and I ended up having to call the imaging center from the hospital room. I think what happened is that the coordinator faxed over whatever was attached to my digital chart without checking that the things I specifically asked for were there. I know they had my most recent ultrasound since my doctor called to discuss it with me, but it never made it into my online chart, which I suspect is why it wasn't sent. It's indicative of an office that is poorly run and coordinated, and where the administrative team seems to follow checklists in a perfunctory way without any knowledge or understanding of individual patient circumstances. Also, the administrator at the hospital where I got surgery told me that this practice had a reputation for being slow to send records and sending incomplete records, so it seems like this is a consistent issue for them that goes beyond my experience. The final straw was that this morning, while I was home recovering from surgery (I am still in pain, still bleeding, still crying about the loss of a baby that I wanted very badly), the office called to ask me if I would like to schedule my next prenatal appointment. There is a level of administrative sloppiness that verges into negligent patient care, and PureOBGYN has managed to hit that mark over and over again. Stay FAR away. read more

What happened to me at PURE OBGYN was not just careless and dehumanizing. And it has haunted both me and my husband ever since. I first came to PURE OBGYN because the office looked serene and elegant. I wanted a peaceful, supportive environment for one of the most sacred seasons of my life. What I found was something hollow and disturbing. A cold, clinical machine with no heart behind the polished walls. My experience began with an ultrasound. The technician was gentle and kind, the only person in the building who showed any sign of compassion. But when I met with the female doctor afterward, everything changed. She asked if I wanted genetic testing for Down syndrome. I told her no and explained that we would love and carry our baby no matter what. She ignored that. She brought it up again. And again. And again. By the fourth time, it was clear she was not just offering options. She was pushing an agenda. She even brought up abortion. I kept repeating that we were not interested, but she would not drop it. We left that appointment feeling unsettled, as if our convictions were unwelcome and our values rejected in that space. But the worst came later in the pregnancy during the height of the pandemic. I returned for a checkup because I was deeply concerned that I had not felt my baby move. This time, I saw Dr. Goncharov who owns the practice. I told him my concern. I was vulnerable, afraid, and hoping for reassurance. His response, without a pause or a trace of emotion, was this: "Well, we see if baby is dead." He said it like he was commenting on the weather. No concern. No compassion. Not even curiosity. Just a blank stare and a shrug. My husband and I looked at each other in shock after the appointment, both asking the same thing out loud. Did that really just happen? Did he actually say that? Yes, he did. And that moment has never left us. The trauma of that encounter was deepened when we learned later that I had preeclampsia. That was why my baby was not moving and my amniotic fluid was low. It was a dangerous condition, and they missed it entirely. That failure could have cost us everything. It nearly did. To make matters worse, he referred us to one of the worst hospitals in New York. We went there because we were new to the area and did not know any better. At that hospital, we were treated like burdens because we were self-pay, even though we had paid PURE OBGYN five hundred dollars per visit. Before we ever agreed to care, my husband asked directly whether the five hundred dollars included everything. He was told yes. But after the devastating appointment, they drew my blood without telling me why and without my consent. I did not even understand what was happening until it was already done. I was too shaken to advocate for myself in that moment. A few days later, I received a massive bill. I still do not know what the bloodwork was for. Let me be absolutely clear. Any unpaid balance is not of negligence. It is because I refuse to pay for a service I never agreed to and never wanted, forced on me in the middle of one of the most emotionally vulnerable moments of my life. What I thought would be a supportive environment for mothers turned out to be cold and transactional. PURE OBGYN is not a place of care. It is a place where conviction is treated as an inconvenience and life is spoken of with chilling detachment. If you are a mother who cherishes the life within you, if you want your care provider to honor your values, and if you expect even the most basic human decency, stay far away from this practice. The modern décor cannot hide what is truly lacking. Compassion. Respect. Integrity. And most of all, humanity. PURE OBGYN failed me as a mother. We will never forget what happened there. No one should walk into that office without knowing what kind of care they may actually receive. If they do reply to this I expect the same rehearsed display: vague empathy, and no accountability. I did find the office to be kind, and the office to be beautiful. However, I went there specifically for PCOS treatment as the website says this is a specialty and was disappointed by the lack of attention and consideration. They wanted to prescribe birth control (which I can't take for a number of reasons) and advised that I lose weight (gee thanks). After that the doctor was out of ideas. I had a great experience with Angela Ferin here, but when asked if I agreed to an ultrasound to confirm my IUD placement it was not clear that I would be billed for 4 different exams totaling over $2300!! If you have a high deductible insurance plan, please be wary. My biggest concern is that one of the charges is for "US Guide Intraop." I questioned this with the billing department as no ultrasound was used during my IUD insertion - it was only done after in a separate room - and they gave me some poor excuse that it is a guide that doesn't create pictures... which is simply not a thing. I questioned them more and have not received a response. Reading more reviews, it seems that billing issues here are common but I am actually quite concerned about this practice committing insurance fraud. read more

Update: After going through the amount of negative reviews on this platform regarding complaints of fraudulent billing, and receiving no help regarding addressing my fraudulent bill, I've reported this practice to the NYC State Department of Insurance Fraud. Please do not give your business here. The billing practices here are UNETHICAL and SHADY. Never have I ever gone in for a routine checkup averaging a thirty dollar copay and come out with a 400 dollar bill. I echo the other complaints regarding SURPRISE bills. This place is unconscionably terrible. I came in to check on my IUD and do a quick annual to make sure all is well. The doctor (who was quite nice) ended up performing a TON of other tests without mentioning that these would NOT be covered - including a sono and a vascular study. After speaking to my insurance billing on the phone from my healthcare (helpful) and the front desk at Pure (extremely unhelpful) I learned from my insurance that this is a COMMON practice for SHADY practices to make more money during a visit. My friend is also an OBGYN and confirmed these are unnecessary and used to charge up bills. Reading more of these reviews - over 15 deal with UNETHICAL BILLING PRACTICES. My question to the owner - do you seriously have no shame? Healthcare in America is already insanely expensive, but to rip off women's healthcare specifically? Shame on you, shame on YOU. At the moment I'm stuck with a 400 dollar bill for what was meant to be a 25 dollar copay for a check up. I am beyond disgusted. I am writing this on behalf of my wife, as she has had trouble writing it herself. We had two horrible experiences at Pure OBGYN over the course of my wife's first pregnancy. First, my wife lost her pregnancy at about 9 weeks. We were heartbroken. The loss was no fault of our doctor or Pure OBGYN. But the physician she was seeing (Dr. Goncharov) had the worst bedside manner in dealing with the loss I've ever seen in a clinician. He was uncaring, evasive, and, after seeing my wife upset, told her that she was getting "too emotional" about the loss. He was a horrible person to accompany us through a difficult experience. Second, after my wife's pregnancy loss, one of the ultrasound techs in the practice, during a regular scan, told her that she had a bicornuate uterus. Ultrasound techs, as we learned much later, are not supposed to make diagnoses; they are not doctors. We were concerned that the bicornuate uterus caused her pregnancy loss, and brought it up with the doctor. He recommended that she "not worry about it" and gave us very little information on what a bicornuate uterus is or how it can affect a pregnancy. In retrospect, I believe that he knew his ultrasound tech was incorrect but didn't want to tell us they'd messed up. We switched practices shortly afterwards due to these experiences, and a number of other difficult interactions with the Pure OB staff. My wife's prior "diagnosis" of bicornuate uterus led us to several needless appointments with high-risk OBs, and may even have contributed to some unnecessary interventions in her next pregnancy. We later learned that her uterus is completely normal; the ultrasound tech was incorrect. We're incredibly lucky to be parents to an amazing baby boy now, who was delivered at a different practice by a caring, warm, capable OB. The change was like night and day. I can't speak to all of the doctors in the practice; it's very possible that there are some good ones. But if you're expecting -- even if you are a low-risk patient, as my wife was -- look elsewhere for good care. You won't find it wih Dr. Goncharov. read more

Came for a nexplanon switch and my doctor Angela was AMAZING! She was calming, sweet, and made it a completely painless process. Although- I did have trouble with scheduling over the phone because only certain doctors can do nexplanon. TLDR: A lot to love at this practice, and a lot to feel extremely frustrated by. The pros: Provider quality is great. I've never seen someone here who didn't listen to my concerns. Providers/nurses/assistants are generous with their time and kind. The offices (have been to all 3 locations) are clean, comfortable. I've always had good experiences with the front desk staff. Cons: Everything that happens between visits is a nightmare. Either they have no systems in place for ensuring continuity and oversight or they are so overworked that things just slip through the cracks. And, for the record, this is not based on one bad experience; more like 5+ incidents. If you are coming to the practice for pregnancy and rotating through providers like I did, you REALLY need to be your own advocate. For the 20 week anatomy ultrasound (which we were told was so important that we should wait to tell most people we were pregnant until after we made sure it was fine), they ran out of appointment spaces and sent us somewhere in bay ridge. Then, no one ever called about results (leaving us on edge about whether things were fine) and when I called, was told I needed to get my results from the other place (which wasn't even a pure obgyn practice and where I wasn't even a patient.) Three separate times, abnormal results were published to my online account and no one called to explain them to me. When I called to ask what I need to know, there was no urgency in getting back to me - just told to wait 24-48 hours for a tech to call back. I've even been prescribed medication with no information about what it's for or what came back abnormal, leaving me wondering if/why Im supposed to take the antibiotics that the pharmacy had time to fill and deliver before the practice called to tell me why they were prescribed. At my 39 week appointment, we were sent to the hospital to be induced. When we showed up, the hospital had no record of us as they had not sent notice that we were being induced for medical reasons, so my partner and I sat in triage from 8pm - 5am the next morning. When I went to my 6 week follow up, I asked if I had had a blood transfusion during labor because I was charged for it on my hospital bill and I didn't recall that happening. They said they didn't know and didn't have my chart in front of them and left it at that. Your best bet is to try to get to know someone there who will look out for you - which is the only way I was able to get my medical forms filled out on time so I could be paid for parental leave. It such an obnoxious situation because I truly love each appointment on its own, but I feel like I can't keep coming back to a place where everything slides through the cracks once you're not there. read more

A very bad experience. Please be sure to read all the reviews here on yelp including those raising concerns about billing and to read all the recent reviews on Google. Many patients have now raised concerns about this practice and its billing practices. I showed up for routine care and am being slammed with charges still 6 months later where pure has coded the care as non-routine, without ever indicating to me I was receiving anything beyond routine care which was the reason I came to the practice. They have not responded adequately to requests to clarify specific reasons for specific bills or to speak to management. I am yet to be provided an adequate reason why I received anything beyond routine care. The practice is trying to profit with unethical billing practices, ignoring e-mails, and treating patients with an extreme lack of care. read more

The doctor and nurses were super helpful, answered all my questions and moved me through my visit in a very organized way. A week later and I still haven't gotten any results. Seems silly to select any star at all but following yelp process here. I went to Dr Goncharov in Brooklyn in Oct 2019. I was just a few weeks pregnant. After a couple of ultrasounds, Dr Goncharov informed me that I was having a miscarriage. He read me my options in terms of terminating the pregnancy, even the option of aborting that day and we said we'd consider the options but needed time to think. Decided to do one "last" ultrasound and as it turned out a week later it a viable pregnancy. My son is 18 months and to imagine our lives without him is heart wrenching.
