I can't say enough good things about Nettle Wellness. This was my first birth experience. Jo's care was professional while also being so thoughtful and patient. She answered every question and I felt heard and understood throughout all of my concerns. I am 41 years old and never once did Jo make me feel like I couldn't have the birth experience I wanted. Thinking back on the experience of my pregnancy and birth of my firstborn is like holding a treasure or remembering a perfect dream. There were challenges of course, many of them, but none of them relating to my care, treatment, or a lack of advocation. Whenever I found myself fixating, panicking or struggling with hurdles along the way Jo had a way of holding space, removing stigma, simplifying the noise, and somehow leaving me feeling safe and empowered. From the first day we walked into Jo Zasloff's waiting room at Nettle Wellness I felt comforted, seen, and cared for. I remember looking around the room, feeling the breeze from an open window, and knowing that I had made the perfect choice. The only choice. The artwork, magazines, and literature around the room were empowering. Even the couch made us feel taken care of. As a musician, often times the music in public places magnifies the stress that comes with them, but at Nettle Wellness the music seemed always somehow perfectly curated for the feeling of the day, accentuating this sense of belonging, and wrapping me up in a warm blanket of safety. When I hear that a friend is pregnant, I often tell them to use a midwife for their delivery. Why? The reason is our experience with Jo. Jo helped deliver our son 3.5 years ago, and not a day goes by where I am not grateful for the care we received from her. It's my opinion that people tend to run into birth trauma when they aren't prepared for all of the complications that might arise with giving birth. Not with Jo. From our first meeting, she talked about every possible outcome that could happen, as my partner had to be induced. This made us feel like we were empowered and in control of the process. Expecting mama's; LOOK NO FURTHER. I am a first time mother and was recommended to have Jo as my midwife by a friend of a friend. Before I met her, she was described to me as a "evidence-based, holistic, calming, smart, caring, feminist midwife," exactly what I wanted. I am a registered nurse, so I am pretty well versed in what is out there as far as care-providers go, and I knew I wanted someone who was going to take into account the whole picture and not just the sum of my body parts (like most OB-GYNs tend to do). Next thing I know, I am having a phone consult with what feels like someone who is already my fierce advocate and friend. Fast-forward to the first in-person appointment in her very chic private office (which is a beautifully decorated bright and airy space; it's extremely calming). There are books with the theme of empowering women in pregnancy and childbirth strewn all over the waiting room, which feels more like a living room that I am just chilling out in before my medical appointment. I actually never really felt like I was in an austere medical environment, though her office is set up as a fully functioning prenatal clinic. I never sat in her waiting room with another patient. It always felt like a prenatal visit with Jo was just catching up with her on what was going on in my life with a side of some tests and exams. Every visit was more calming than the last, I really breezed right through my pregnancy in the most zen state of mind and I have Jo to thank for that because she can attest to the fact that my life was literally in a crazy chaotic state throughout the entire 10 months!! Now for the important part...my birth!! It was the most extraordinary experience of my life. Whenever I tell my birth story I start by saying I had the most incredible team around me, and that is what made the difference. Jo came to my house when I was in labor to check how dilated I was because I didn't want to be in the hospital until the last minute. That might have been an added bonus because of the whole covid-19 situation but it is just an example of how above and beyond she went for me. She coached me through the hardest parts of the labor process and skillfully talked me out of an epidural I was screaming for at 8cm because she knew that it was a goal of mine to have a natural birth. People don't typically transfer their prenatal care to a different provider when their halfway through their third trimester. But when partners/doulas were not allowed to come to births because of Covid, I wanted more personalized care so I switched from my OB group practice to Nettle Wellness. I couldn't be happier with that decision! From our first phone call, Jo was warm and welcoming, compassionate and caring. I immediately felt confident that she would advocate for me and have my/my baby's best interest at heart. Everything about being in her care felt very thoughtful and deliberate. For some time now I've been trying to sum up my time with Jo. One word that consistently comes to mind is safe. Jo was my safe place throughout my entire pregnancy, labor & delivery and now postpartum. She never failed to be at my side when I needed her and always went above and beyond. Even the little things like giving me a journal to write in at the beginning of my visits or how she did an ultrasound on her handheld tablet every visit because she knew how happy it made me. I could see the joy it brought her to see me smile. Those are the things that count. I went just over 42 weeks. Jo checked in constantly and reassured me my body knows what to do and helped me remain calm. I look back on my labor and delivery with complete awe and admiration. I didn't realize I had a dream birth until it happened and it was beyond anything I could have imagined. It was my first birth and baby boy was born safely at home in water surrounded by my loved ones. During the whole wild journey of birth I could viscerally witness Jo's presence filled with pure love. After he was born Jo honored this sacred moment and gently guided us both back on our time. There was no rush. There was no urgency to do anything except cherish. To this day, nearly three months later, I still feel seen and heard by Jo. I was looking for a midwife with an office in Brooklyn, who delivered in a hospital in Manhattan. Not easy to find! Im glad this search led me to Jo. Jo was extremely supportive the whole way through the process. Her home/office is so nice and welcoming. Jo has a very calm and relaxed vibe but was able to get assistance when I needed it during the birth. I liked how she gave a lot of follow up support after the birth. Once, going above and beyond her duties, Jo counseled my partner and over the phone for 45 minutes when we were completely overwhelmed and lost when our newborn wasn't sleeping in his bassinet. I HIGHLY recommend Jo as a midwife. From my first conversation with her on the phone, I felt comfortable and heard. She took the time at each appointment to really listen to all my questions and help me navigate my first pregnancy. Her office is out of her brownstone in Bed-Stuy which was really great during the pandemic because it meant that my spouse could come with me to all my appointments. It was clean, safe, comfortable, and also really beautiful. I always looked forward to getting to see her. It is only her there. She does the entire appointment by herself which I loved. When I went into labor, she was there for me on the phone talking to either me, my spouse, or my doula helping navigate which stage I was in and supporting me. When she met me at the hospital, I was so happy to see her. She, and my doula, gave me the confidence I needed to build my strength mentally and physically through my birth. It was beautiful. Extremely hard but beautiful and was so thankful to have Jo there supporting me along the way. I never felt pressured to do anything I didn't feel comfortable with. Once we got home from the hospital, she did in home appointments with us and checked in via text multiple times a week. She helped me navigate postpartum and breastfeeding as well which I was so thankful for. When I first got pregnant, I assumed I would work with my OB/GYN practice -- that was until I spoke with a friend about her experience with Nettle Wellness. I was instantly convinced I wanted to work with Jo and I've truly never looked back. From her beautiful office in Bed Stuy (where she's gone out of her way to design a serene experience) to the time she takes to sit and talk with you at each check-in (no rush job appointments with her), I felt incredibly cared for, listened to, and considered throughout my pregnancy and delivery. Jo's core belief is that in most cases, pregnancy should not be treated as a medical event--and while I felt like she still did all the necessary medical checks and tests, I really appreciated how she approached them with this ethos in mind. When it came to my delivery--things did not go as planned (guessing they rarely do!) but what could have been a scary or difficult experience was as smooth and positive as possible because of how Jo cared for me throughout it. Lastly, Jo's 2 in-home visits postpartum made us feel *so* cared for--what provider comes to YOU after you've given birth? I have not been to Nettle Wellness yet, so this is a review of Jo, the Midwife as a practitioner. I am excited to not have to go to the UWS from BK should I need her midwife services again. I honestly don't know where to start. Jo was such a kind, loving and nurturing presence throughout my pregnancy, labor and postpartum care. He approach to midwifery is a model of acceptance, care, and excellence. Jo was the second midwife I had delivered with and there was a huge difference in my care. I didn't realize there was so much more that could be done to support this way of brining life, but Jo's care was above and beyond anything I could have imagined. She prepared me by warning that I was super full of fluids and adult diapers would prove useful (was she ever right). She made the best of my reality, I was delivering a baby the night of a blizzard with limited staffing so the birth center would be a hard ask with a picture perfect labor, which I was not having. She still advocated for me and kept my wishes to deliver in the birth center front of mind. She helped me focus on what was best and possible with the current way my labor was progressing, allowed me to cry that loss and focus on what would be the same. She brought flameless candles in for mood lighting. It was only once I had my beautiful healthy baby in my hands did she and the doula let me know they were shocked how long my second labor was taking. I never felt that from them for one moment. With Jo, a wonderful doula and my husband I was able to have a (drug free) natural childbirth, something I really wanted to do. If this review ended there I would say she was amazing. But it does not, because the postpartum was such an incredible part of my care. The constant contact and support was something I did not realize was missing from my past birthing experience, it strengthen both my body and soul. I was prompted I shared things I never would have felt warranted contact and got such helpful tips and support for how to help aid healing and keep a look out for things that might indicate an issue. I can't say enough words to praise Jo. The care she showed me throughout my pregnancy, labor, delivery, and thereafter was above and beyond what I would've ever excepted from anyone. She created such a warm and welcoming environment and was very supportive and responsive. She was so well prepared for my delivery... if only i could write an entire essay to decribe my story. Jo was my midwife for the pregnancy and delivery of my son in 2015. From the first phone call I had with her to discuss working with her and her practice, I knew I had found my midwife. She is so warm, loving and truly cares about your whole self - body, mind and spirit. I had planned on doing a non-medicated birth in the birthing center at Mt Sinai, but after an extremely long, weird and difficult labor process, my son ended up being born via c-section and I was very much medicated. It was a difficult situation, one that I hadn't expected, and, as someone who struggles with anxiety, something that I emotionally processed for many months after his birth. But throughout the labor/birth process, I felt so completely supported by Jo. She made sure I knew all my options, was honest and clear about what was going on, and even lead me through a meditation when i was feeling especially anxious and couldn't sleep/had weird muscle spasms from the epidural. She was an advocate for me even when I didn't know I needed one, like when right after my son's birth she made sure he was brought to me and put on my chest before he was taken away to be bathed and I was sewn back up and moved to post-op. And several months postpartum when I wasn't sure what to do about birth control, she talked through all the various options I had for a good 45 minutes.
