I've eaten a lot of pupusas around Greater LA even in Palm Springs to Palmdale. These pupusas are among the best I have tried. It's not too doughy with the right amount of filling. The outside is dry and slightly crisp to the touch. Some places are oily and the pupusas are more dough than filling. I prefer the vegetarian pupusas and loved my spinach and loroco pupusas. The service is warm and friendly even if they don't speak English. If you're curious about Salvadorean style horchata and feeling adventurous, give it a try as it's different than the Mexican version. read more

I like this place because it is the closest to home cooked meals when it comes to pupusas and most of their dishes. The ladies are friendly and you can see them hard at work in the kitchen, they make their tortillas by hand along with all other items on their menu. If you're looking for delicious, authentic, Salvadorean food, go right in. This is not a fancy place where you'll be treated like royalty, it's a mom & pop shop that's very in touch with their roots, as evidence by the decor. Yes, like any mom & pop shop they are understaffed, but thankfully in my experiences (yes, plural, I returned shortly after) the staff has been cordial. On my first trip I ordered pupusas: revueltas and queso con frijol, and it was delicious. I'm very picky when it comes to pupusas and these were definitely my cup of tea! They're not super greasy on the outside and then greasy again on the inside. They're a bit greasy on the inside because of the chicharron, but on the outside, it's not overcooked, just the way I like it. I also bought yuca frita with chicharron and asked for the yuca to be "bien frita" (very fried) and it was just perfect! The second time I went was because I really wanted to try the platter my mother bought since it looked delicious, platanos fritos con frijol y crema. (Plantains with beans and cream). My God, it was everything! They hand pick the sweetest plantains and as anyone that eats this dish knows, it can go south quickly if the plantain is too tender or too ripe. Nope! It was perfection. I also got cheese pupusas. I have a tender stomach and I have to be careful with the cheese pupusas because the cheese can be too heavy and I end up with an upset stomach. Nope, they do quality, authentic style cheese and it was scrumptious. I did not feel ill afterwards. Drinks: Horchata and tamarindo were okay (I'm Mexican so I prefer Mexican style horchata and tamarindo), but my daughter loved the horchata. I got the cola champagne and some water. Straight to the point this place is not what the reviewers say.. place is awesome, music is great, food is amazing. I'm really picky with pupusas. This brought childhood memories. Flavor is amazing. I think the only thing that does needs bitt more work is the casamiento. But everything else is on point. It's a mom's and pops place. Don't expect your food to be ready ready fast. If not fast food restaurants. They show the love of their roots. Great place. Old school decor. Stop complaining about the dumb stuff. Your there for the food. I live the the street from this place. I am not one to write reviews. But this place definitely doesn't deserve my money.for sure they lost a customer. My parents have been going in there for years. But that won't happen any more. Yesterday I went in to buy pupusas, an order of empanadas and a plate de carne asada TO GO. When I arrived to the restaurant it seemed pretty empty maybe up to 4 families in which three were eating. I was glad to see an empty restaurant because of the food I was ordering was going to be quick. Anywho, I order my food. Waited 40 minutes for the food which at this point I was annoyed and frustrated; mind you there only one family waiting for their food. I asked one of the waitress if my food was going to be ready. And she kept mentioning she was waiting for the carne asada plate. The time of the food arrive, I usually check my order before stepping out. I check my order and I told the girl that I didn't see my pupusas and she went to ask the cooker and the cooker said she put it wrapped in aluminum. At fist when I saw that I thought it was the tortillas for the carne asada plate. So I asked her; well Can you put it in a to go plate? And she responded I can't give you a To go plate since you only order 3 pupusas. You can picture my face when she responded that. Instead she gave me a flat plate. And she said If you want a plate to go plate is $.25; mind you I order to go. In addition, my mother notice that there wasn't any disposable forks; at this point we asked if they charge for forks and that they were out of utensils. Overall, the customer service is horrible from the moment we were following up on our to getting the food. They should be thankful I didn't make a scene in front of the families who were eating because I was more hungry than anything. Once I got the food; they were cold; not sure if it sitting there. When you pull into the parking area of the plaza, there's music playing from the restaurant. I thought it was interesting bc Ive never seen that before. Place doesnt look like much but their food is really good! Pupusas are stuffed with whatever flavors you can choose from. Used to be my husband and my favorite spot. Came here weekly . I don't know what happened but service takes about 1-2 hours , once you get your food it's undercooked and the waitress has the worst attitude . They always have the now hiring sign up so I'm assuming they just need an extra hand.. for now we traded to MYRAS in Downey they have great service even though it's a little more expensive I rather pay extra. This was my pupusas spot for a cool while, about 5 years ago. I stopped coming here because I found cheaper pupusas somewhere else. So about Comalapa, the place is nice. They recently remodeled the seats and now have booths as well as chairs. They have a lot of nice decor around the restaurant. They also have an old man singing music live to attract customers. However, the service is bad. I don't like the new server lady, she ignores the women customers to attend the men. The food takes forever to be served and she only checks up once. It took about 45 mins to get my 2 pupusas and a steak plate. I mean, the food is great. Horchata and chocolate are amazing. But, you can find BETTER pupusas somewhere else, with BETTER service. Some other man was waiting for a "to/go" order and got mad cause they took about 40 mins for his order as well. When the cashier dude gave him his order the man left angry saying "chinga tu madre hijo de puta" lol he was so mad. Everyone was mad. Bad waitress!!! I like the original waitress. Ever since Gloria's in Bell Gardens closed we have been looking for a place to eat pupusas that is close to Downey and we decided to try Comalapa. We did not have to wait too long for our pupusas to go. It must be noted that you have to wait for good pupusas since they are supposed to be made fresh on the spot. This way you can know that they didn't use a premade pupusa. When we got home we really enjoyed our pupusas revueltas. The place is colorful in a tacky way and has lots of plants. The service was good the first time around. Next time I went is probably the last. When my boyfriend and I entered a tall chubby teen looked at us with an "I don't want to stay later than I need to" face and told us that they were about to close and that we would be the last customers! Wow! That is pretty bad! We just left! I do not care that the pupusas were really good. If you think about it a team is only as good as its players and his attitude must reflect the general overall attitude of the rest of the employees and owners. If he feels he can get away with that it is because he feels encouraged to do so directly or indirectly. Being Salvi, I am very critical when it comes to going to Salvadorian restaurants. Especially if I order Pupusas cause I make my own at home so I tend to compare. Anyhow, this restaurant has some great pupusas! Big, stuffed, and delicious! I love the ones made with rice flour more as opposed to the traditional masa pupusas. It's a small, but inviting restaurant located in a stripe mall near a laundry mat. They offers kareokee on the the weekends, in spanish. The workers are friendly and the restaurant is decorated with many tipical Salvadorian Airt and pictures of my country. If you like empanadas de platanos, theirs' are pretty good except for the fact they only offer the cream filled ones, not the bean stuff empanadas. The prices of their food is pretty good compared to Mayra's in Downey and you get more for your buck too! read more
