I had a few basic questions about Pokémon and other card items, and instead of helping, she came across annoyed and uninterested the entire time. When you walk into a card and game shop, you expect at least some level of enthusiasm or willingness to help--especially with games like Pokémon, Magic, or Warhammer. Unfortunately, that just wasn't the case here. Customer service makes a big difference, and this experience completely turned me off from coming back.

During COVID, my partner and I did about a puzzle every week. We now have cases of puzzles that we did one time, then packed away! I brought a few, so we could swap them out for a few "easier" puzzles that my kids could do. It's such a cool idea and love it and came back with 3 kiddo options. The store is so wonderful, located right across the way from Eastern Market on Capitol Hill. All of the staff is not just incredibly friendly, but quick to offer advice on games and puzzles to take home. There is a room where you can attempt puzzles and games. We spent several hours here just enjoying all of the entertainment. It's a great rainy or snowy day activity. The bookstore just next door is a perfect pairing.

Toy Trains! Model Kits! And all the other art sets, car tracks, European and Japanese toys and "Stuff." You know how a modern store just has people behind the counter? Hobby Works has staff walking the floor to help you. And they really help. And they know their stuff. And when you're there, it's got that friendly clubhouse atmosphere like you stopped off here while walking home from school in the 6th grade. Sometimes it feels like with online shopping, kids won't ever experience the friendly local stores like we did. Not while Hobby Works is open, it's all modern, but it's a shopping experience that most stores lost over the years- and our kids deserve to experience that friendliness.

I had always thought the store was more geared towards sports memorabilia but there truly is a little something for everyone here. We easily blew through an hour looking at everything in the store and let me tell you... my children are not patient people. By the end of our visit we had to pick up some items to help build up my pre-schooler's budding Pokemon collection and something for big sis too. If customers can't rely on the pricing information provided by staff, it creates a lack of trust in the shopping experience. I understand that prices can be entered incorrectly, but a $40 difference is significant. A simple gesture of honoring the quoted price or meeting somewhere in the middle would have gone a long way toward good customer service. Instead, I left feeling misled / baited n switched.
