While it's wonderful to have a local toy store in town, the shop is not open at posted times consistently. The owner is super sweet so you can call and she'll usually be able to open up, but there have been a few missed opportunities where we were walking by and would have popped in but they were closed. The shop has a large variety, but it is highly disorganized, you will need help if you're looking for something specific. It is packed to the brim, almost claustrophobic to me. Very hard to manage if you have a tiny kid who wants to touch everything. read more

I just spent a lovely time shopping at Fair Day Toy Store today. The shelves are full of games and toys for kids of all ages. I've been looking for a particular board game that was popular some years ago, and hadn't been able to find it. Manager Lisa Ripkin called the company that supplies her toys and found out they didn't have the game in either. We had the best toys and toy shops growing up, and I still appreciate a good shop. I was looking for something for a new baby in my life, but didn't find it. Well, first off - I bet you are wondering what the heck cooperative games are. Well, they are games where both players collaborate and work together rather than typical board games where it is a competition and only one winner. Yeah, a little crunchy granola..but a really neat concept. Fair Days also has books (in fact they're having a 1/2 off sale on selected titles) Haba blocks, really cool puzzles like a treasure map that is puzzle pieces "trapped" in a bottle and other cool toys. One of Takoma Park's hidden gems. This store carries board games that would satisfy any boardgamegeek.com mod. Reiner Knizia has a great presence there. Then of course, they have the standards - Apples to Apples, puzzles, and (thank god) the only Monopoly I've seen there has been Beatles-themed. Add in bicycle accessories, fair-trade soccer balls and equipment, Takoma Park t-shirts that support the Voice, childrens' books and learning toys... so much more that I couldn't begin to list. This is truly an independent store. Lisa owns, manages, and works as the cashier. Her young son is often helping her "organize" the toys. Plus, she's always willing to give a discount to happy shoppers. If you're conscious of the state of small independent stores, though, don't take it - it's worth more just to have Fair Day's Play around. read more

A little gem in downtown Takoma Park. This is such a cute toy store, with so many interesting and alternative toys and games. This store is owned by Lisa, who is extremely helpful and super-nice, and if you are lucky you might even get to know her little boy who will be happy to help you. This shop has the gifts you are looking for if you want something off the beaten path for birthdays, holidays or any other special occasions. Accessible by metro (a 10 minute walk from the Takoma station on the red line) it is close to restaurants, a coffee place and an ice-cream place and right in front of a new bike share station making it super-easy to get to (and of course you can always drive). read more

I've shopped here three times and each experience has been underwhelming. While they do have neat and unique toys/games, their customer service is always severely lacking. Like they're doing you a favor by allowing you to shop there. Never a thank you shopping and only once did a lovely young man help me find an item I was looking for. With Child's Play and Sullivans in close proximity and more competitive prices, I don't feel the need to venture into this store again. read more

This is a great store. They have so many of the cool, new games for adults like Settlers of Catan, Dominion, Carcassone, Ticket to Ride, etc. They also have a lot of great games for kids. This is such a great little toy store. I popped in today for the first time looking for gifts for 3 toddlers, one of which is my own. The owner was extremely helpful, and pointed out different toys for my target age group. I will admit that the store is a bit cramped, but it's full of unique toys you don't find at the big box stores. As another poster mentioned, there is a good selection of board games as well. I was warned, this tienda/store was packed to the hilt. Well what better day than to go on Christmas EVE? :) It was great, even though we were jam packed in the store and the staff member still came over to help us and you would have thought we were the only ones in the store. I love this quirky place. The owner really knows her toys and always recommends age-appropriate gifts. Everything is good quality, beautiful craftsmanship. Toys made in Germany, Sweden, etc. Lots of real wood products, no lead paint! Also high-end board games. They also have mainstream stuff like lego sets, balls, badminton, and art supplies. I love this toy store. I was recently shopping at the Tacoma Park coop when I did a gps search for toy stores nearby and Fair Day's Play popped up. So we went to check it out. My 8 month old and 2 year old were with me. The store is small but has a lot of great toys and games. I was impressed by the amount of quality toys for all ages. She had a lot of wooden toys for my infant son. I usually had to order these toys online. But it's nice to have a local toy store where you can touch and feel the toys and see which ones your little one was into. The owner is amazing and was able to help me pick out the perfect gift for a 2 year old's birthday party we will be attending this weekend. My daughter keeps asking to go back to the "fun store." Customer Service is fantastic. The man working there is so handsome and muscular. He thanks the shoppers and is always attentive to the customer's needs. The toy selection is lacking but the store has a nice aunty house feel. It feels very homey, which adds to its charm but the prices are a little high considering the prices you can find on Amazon. The owner was working when we went, and she was so welcoming & offered help in finding a gift for our 2 year old nephews bday. She helped with so many fun ideas, I love that everything she has is either a learning toy, developmental aid, and a lot made of wood and no big super store brands that everyone already has. We settled in a 'Rody' bouncy riding horse, it was a hit with all the kids at the party everyone wanted a turn! And a few partners there said their kids had one and love it too. Great choice! I work as an occupational therapist in a DC school. Whenever I have needed an activity to use in my therapy sessions, I have gone to Lisa first as she routinely goes above and beyond to help me locate the items I need. She is so very knowledgable about what is available out in the toy/game world and keeps unique and fun things in stock. If she doesn't have something in stock, she can think of either an alternative or she can order it for me. The variety of activities and games give me ideas of what I can do with my kids even if something I see wasn't always initially what I came to buy. Lisa's shop is a treasure in this day and age of limited real time and space browsing. I value discussing ideas and seeing toys and games for the fun they spark in myself, much less the kids who come to love the items I find there. (I should also mention that when my son was growing up, Fair Days Play was a "treat stop" for new games and toys. This shop is great, and both the owner and her son are quite helpful. Very good, feminine-positive book suggestions for a picky young relative, great toys and games. My only complaint is that maybe it's just my bad luck, but the hours seem to be sort of hit-or-miss -- on one hand I totally understand and support the owner changing hours (closing early, etc) to get time with her kid, support him etc, but it has caused me to have to take my business to a chain store at times when I need to get a gift for someone but can't seem to quite match up with the hours it's open. read more

This small shop is crammed with wonderful toys and books, and the owner is a superb guide who knows her inventory extremely well and gives great advice about current favorites, tried-and-true, and best matches for your favorite kids' ages and interests. It's like an overflowing treasure chest of toys, games, and books, at all price points - the special strategy games that my older grandkids have heard of, the simple toys that fit my two-year-old grandchild, cuddly creatures for new babies, hula hoops and jump ropes and so many classic toys, the surprise small new things (LED party balloons? Yup, and I bought them as stocking-stuffers!) -- really everything I've ever wanted is in there, and there is no more patient guide than the owner. She is also a wonderful collaborator when I come in with a child; if a child clearly wants something and I whisper a request, the owner will whisk it behind the counter and help me pay and smuggle it out without the child knowing - which isn't really hard because children always find something fun here to distract their attention. I also love knowing I can trust these playthings. Today I bought some well-made plastic farm animals (plus more exotic ones I couldn't resist) and I am very grateful that I don't need to wonder if they were made with toxic paints; the owner wouldn't stock them in that case. Because of the personal attention, this isn't a store for rushing: instead, it's a store to love year after year after year.
