Pumpernickle and Rye is a small stand alone spot. Plenty of parking in the back, with back entry. They have a few tables set up outside also. When we walked up, we were immediately greeted. There were a few tables available, and some seating ny the front windows, which is where we sat. My daughter ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese on a bagel and I had an everything bagel with cream cheese. They had some decent options, including coffee. I went with the smores latte, which was yummy. And my daughter had a caramel frappe, which she also enjoyed. Overall, nice spot for locak breakfast and coffee and the service was great as well. read more

I've been here countless times and have never reviewed. (Huge oversight!) I drive 50 minutes to get here at least once a month because this place is just that good, especially for a vegetarian. Creative, delicious sandwiches and salads. Go into nearly any sandwich shop and their vegetarian options consist of the typical (and boring) caprese or hummus/veggie. Not here. Here they have an imagination! Kale of Duty is my top pick. The Whistle Stop is excellent too. Salads/bowls: all delicious. The French onion soup (veg version)? Um, yes please! Great selection of drinks: alcoholic and NA. Cute/fun greeting cards to peruse while you wait for your food. I've only ever encountered friendly, helpful employees. We stopped in for lunch after a morning of shopping, after viewing their menu offerings online. The place is very small but they have five tables and then bar seating in the two front window areas. You stand in line and order at the counter using their paper menus. We opted for the roast beef sandwich with fig jam. It comes on a round, soft roll with a nice, thick amount of roast beef. It was very tasty and I would get it again. For drinks, I didn't notice their specials that were hand-written and posted to the right of the register. There were a couple I absolutely would have gotten. Instead, I ordered an Irish cream latte. When I tried it, I thought they had forgotten the flavoring, but when I asked, they had added the syrup so they put in some more. I still couldn't taste the flavoring. My friend had the same issue with hers. We drank our drinks anyway. Maybe coffee drinks aren't their forte. The sandwiches were, great, though! I still plan to visit again in the future. Quick visit on a Saturday morning for a late breakfast. Their online ordering system was easy to use and straight forward. Upon arrival, our order was ready to go. I had ordered a Boylan's cherry coke online and was disappointed to find they only had the classic coke in stock (I wouldn't have ordered that if they didn't have the cherry coke). The bagels themselves were good! It's hard to go wrong with a classic bagel sammie and they have some creative items on the menu. We ordered the latke browns which were really unique but one of our orders of them was really overcooked and too hard. It's also a tad pricey for a bagel breakfast. I've tried going to this shop several times to purchase a dozen bagels. each time I have had to wait at least 10 minutes for my order. This time there was one person ahead of me, just finishing up their order. When I asked what bagels they had, they pointed to their board indicating what was available. I placed & paid for my order. 5 or so min later I was told that they were sorry and that my order was on its way, but was taking a little longer as of my order was still baking. I would've appreciated being allowed to make a decision whether I wanted to wait or not. If I hadn't paid, I would've walked out. They need some competition! read more

Had a Classic Breakfast Sandwich - Egg (scrambled) + Cheese (provolone) + Turkey Sausage on a Brioche. You choose the bread, cheese, and how you want your egg done (I like). As this was during breakfast time, for a drink I had the Honey Cinnamon Latte. Both the sandwich and latte were great, and service was quick. When I ordered the drink, they asked what milk I wanted, and I said whatever comes with it. They asked again and so I said Almond milk. What they failed to mention was that what I chose was extra $ - it would have been nice to know that when I put in my order, as a heads up. Really love the interior with the wooden signs along with the space and merchandise. The menu has great names for their items like Sir Dips A lot. They have a lot of FOH staff but I only saw a couple of employees in the back. Perhaps this could improve their QC and timeliness? Overall, it's a great place to get breakfast or lunch if you're not in a hurry. The breakfast items look really good and the bagel my sandwich was on was fantastic. We had Smokey & the Bandit (smoked brisket) and a kind of a big dill (Dill Egg Salad) sandwiches. So delicious- we also ordered latke's with tomato jam. The owner and his family were there- really nice people. I also got a growler of kombucha! I'm pumped to try it, I've never bought it by the growler before. *Sigh* Things have changed here and the last few times we visited, it was disappointing. I used to always get their lox bagel but stopped because their salmon changed. It used to be a beautiful fresh color (made in house) and then they switched it to what looks like grocery lox. Not sure if that was a one off or what but since then, I started getting other sandwiches which are always a solid 3.5/5. This last time we got their fried chicken sandwich + chicken tenders +chicken soup and the chicken was extremely dry across all 3 items. We wound up throwing out the tenders. On top of the quality, the prices are very high. In total, we got 2 sandwiches, 2 large soups, 1 small soup, 1 kids tender meal, and 2 drinks for $81. Hopefully things improve, but for now we'll likely choose somewhere else to go. read more

We enjoy coming here & treating ourselves every few months. However, like others have mentioned, it's quite pricey for the quality of food you're receiving as a cafe. They add on all these extra surcharges to an already expensive item without disclosing it. For example, a matcha could be $8 for a small, then a $1 for a syrup shot (robbery right there) and then your standard $1 for ND milk. That right there is $10 for a drink that I can surprisingly get cheaper at a Starbucks for a much larger size and have more matcha added. P&R's was quite weak/ watered down. We spent $45 on two basic breakfast sandwiches, a drink and a pastry. A lot more than what we were expecting for a fast casual breakfast.. but we try to support small businesses when we can. It would just be nice if they were more transparent with all of their pricing including pastries and random up-charges. Side note, their tomato jam spread is fantastic! read more

I stopped by this coffee shop / restaurant on the way to a meeting in Frederick and it really hit the spot for both food and remote work. I ordered an egg sandwich with cheese which was fresh, hot and nicely prepared and wrapped, served with a tray to go along with it. Another nice touch is the retail space has two alcove type areas which are great for working; I took a conference call on my headset there with no disruption to others. The attention to detail here is great across the board; only small complaint might be not much selection for those on low carb diets. We tried two sandwiches: 1. OY VEY ALL DAY: chunks of super flavorful and juicy in-house-brined and smoked pastrami. With HEX Ferments kraut all piled high on freshly baked marble rye. I originally grew up in the NYC area and this is flat out the best pastrami sandwich I've had outside of NY/NJ. It's the best pastrami in the DMV region, on par with the BBQ pastrami at Monks in Purcellville, VA. 2. NOTORIOUS P.I.G.: fennel-roasted pork shoulder, broccoli rabe, provolone, garlic aioli on ciabatta. The pork is the star here and was excellent. Amazing sandwiches here. I had read many good things about this place, particularly about their Turkey & Brie sandwich. So, I stopped there, ordered that, and can only assume their kitchen was having an off day. The owner reached out to me and explained that I was over charged and issued me a refund. She did not have to do that, but she did it any way. They have now adjusted their protocols and added a build a bagel option in their pos system so that this won't happen again. Decided to visit Pumpernickel and Rye on a random Friday afternoon looking for something different. I wanted a sandwich but I wasn't sure what kind, and my usual options of Jimmy John's or firehouse subs didn't sound that appealing to me at the time. Pumpernickel and rye is located next to Urbana Elementary school and offers plenty of parking behind the building. When I walked in around 6 o'clock the dinner crowd hadn't arrived yet so I decided to dine in. The cafe is small but very clean and with a modern/ farmhouse vibe. When ordering at a new place, what I typically like to do is trust their judgment on recommendations so I asked how the brie sandwich was. The gentleman mentioned that the brie sandwich is one of their most popular sandwiches so I decided to order that as well as a mint chip frappe. I decided to sit in one of the more secluded areas of the small café and waited about, two or three minutes before my frappe was brought to my table. The frappe itself was refreshing - not too sweet and pretty much everything I was expecting. When the sandwich was delivered, it was presented very nicely. It's a large sandwich so I wasn't sure if I would be able to eat at all. Wow! The sandwich was phenomenal. It was gooey and the sourdough bread was fresh and crunchy, but not too crunchy. It was warm but not hot and the turkey meat in the sandwich was enough that I felt like it justified the cost. Overall I really enjoyed it. I actually ended up eating the entire sandwich. After sometime, the gentleman who took my order called me by my name and asked if I enjoyed the sandwich. That is great service! I'll be back and will be bringing my family and friends. read more

I had always wanted to try this place and it was relatively close to me. It took some time, but it always intrigued me how this place manages high level of stars throughout the years. Now, that I have tried it, I know why. The location is quaint. Not entirely accessible if your re not in Urbana, but close enough to be peaceful and less hectic. The food here is fresh and it really shows. The ingredients are fresh, the offerings are on point, the packaging was well suited for people on the go. I just was surprised with how everything was and how it complimented by schedule. There are some seating areas, which is not that much, but if you are the only one there, it is super peaceful and enjoyable. Not too many cars coming in and out and driving around so the sound is at a minimal. I personally was thinking that this place could make a nice lunch date spot - again, if you are alone. There are two nook type areas for seating and if you're there alone, you wont be judged while being on a date by a stranger. Definitely had that happen before - very distracting, lol. Anyways, back to the place. There are various options on drinks too. Kombucha, wine, beer. The beer selection is very local such as Aslin Beer Co. I was curious and just perused around and wanted to try some. If this place was bigger, it would be great, but I do appreciate the small business type feel. The cutest cafe ever!!! I love the decor and the vibe throughout the entire store. They also sell lots of different local and small business products (drinks, snacks, baked goods). This is one of the few restaurants and businesses that I have ever seen that is transparent with their composting program. Pump+rye is partnered with Key City Compost and actually composts all their compostable products!! I was so excited to see this partnership. What a great idea! The chai latte is delicious.
