If you love nature, if you love being on the water, if you love not having anything to do, if you love not having a timeline or a deadline or schedule... you should treat yourself to Pulteney Cruisers. It's an absolutely lovely, relaxed way to spend an hour in the city.
It took us a spell to figure out how to get to the banks of the (opposite) side of the River Avon, so after you've crossed the Pulteney Bridge, look immediately to your right for a small iron rail around a descending staircase (17 Argyle St would be the address for the businesses located near the stairs). Go down and around these to get to the other side. From there you'll see a green space adjacent to the river (the Beazer Maze is parallel to this), and that's where Pulteney Cruisers picks up (you'll see a sign with their departing timetable and prices).
Pulteney Cruisers is apparently the longest established boat tour operator in Bath. Their boats seat up to 80 people, offers a heated cabin, a toilet on board, and a sundeck. If it's beautiful out, I implore you to sit on the sundeck and enjoy the scenic one hour cruise that goes up the River Avon, past Avon valley, to the village of Bathampton (where you can choose to get off to sightsee or grab lunch at Bathampton Mills; as a side note: once everyone's seated and the cruise has started, someone will walk around to collect fees and at that point just let them know then if you're doing a round trip or a one way ticket [you could walk the 2 miles back into Bath or catch a later boat and pay on board for your return]) and then literally turns around (because it hits a dead end of sorts) and comes back down the river.
The boat ride offers informative commentary not just from an unseen narrator, but - if you're sitting on the sundeck towards the front - from the captain as well. If you're looking for a quiet moment where you can sit, and reflect, and bird watch, and possibly spot an otter, and learn a little more about this area of Somerset (actually learned more from this cruise than anything else we did while in Bath!)... this is for you. It's simple. It's quiet. There's not much to see outside of trees and wildlife, but it's a really nice, really different way to spend an hour in Bath, y'know? read more
