A bit has changed since my last experience with Mad Max Tours, including a much more limited offering. There are three tours to choose from now: Tour 1 (I have not done [because I've seen them all before]): a tour of Stonehenge, a walk in Castle Combe Village, a photo stop at Cherhill White Horse, a visit to the Avebury Stone Circles, a photo stop at Silbury Hill, lunch at Lacock National Trust village. Tour 2 (I recently did): The Cotswold Villages Experience which includes very accessible and highly informative visits/walks through Castle Combe Village, Bibury & Arlington Row, Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-On-The-Wold, as well as Malmesbury Abbey & Market Cross. Get ready to be absolutely immersed in the Cotswolds! While our guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the area (we learned so many interesting things!) and thoughtful of bio breaks, we felt the day could have been paced better. We were rushed at Bourton-on-the-Water and Malmesbury Abbey; but, we had *far too much* time at both Stow-on-the-Wold (all fourteen of us ended up standing on the street for forty minutes or so waiting for our guide to show back up; that being said, you should absolutely take Mad Max's recommendation to get lunch at Cotswolds Baguettes and eat them near the church with the famous Yew trees!), and - maybe because our tour guide had a personal connection to it - Arlington Row, where we spent a very, very long time standing in front of people's houses. Tour 3 (I have not done): special access to Stonehenge. I do LOVE these kinds of (almost) all-inclusive tours; they take away the anxiety of needing to drive or come up with an itinerary. They also allow you to truly take in the incredible scenery from comfortable small buses that navigate lots of back roads expertly! I just found this particular tour to be a little less personal than when I first visited a few years back (and compared to our experiences with the Heart of Scotland tours out of Edinburgh) AND I'm missing the more varied selection of tours they used to offer as well. read more

We did the Cotswold tour 8/23/24 Scenery wise the tour was interesting, transiting through the lovely and history rich Cotswolds villages. Lunch however was a disaster. After being told, numerous times, told NOT to eat Lunch in Bourton and wait for Stow-On-The-Wold for a sumptuous lunch, we arrived in Stow to find every single pub closed, many for 3-4 days. We wound up having a lunch in a pasty shop that was, as a British Baking Show would call it "Not Worth the Calories. What I don't understand is that the same tour came here 2 days ago so why did they not forward this information? We could of had a lovely lunch in Bourton. read more

We LOVED this experience! From the kindness of the main office to our low-key hilarious and ultra-knowledgable tour guide to the comfy motor coach, we could not have asked for a better day trip from Bath. We will never hear the song "Solsbury Hill" again without smiling. read more

My wife and I took an all day tour with Mad Max Tours (Kevin was our guide) to Stonehenge, Avebury and a couple of small towns in the Cotswolds. It was a really nice experience. The group was small (about 12 people on our tour) and it was organized to get us to Stonehenge before the crowds. When we arrived at Stonehenge we were the first group to get tickets. The site itself had very few other tourists when we got there, but became much more crowded by the time we left about an hour later - and I assume it stays that way until closing time. Kevin was a great guide, entertaining and full of local knowledge, but also good at letting people explore on their own and letting people quietly enjoy the scenery as he drove us through the countryside. Price was very fair, overall I felt this was a great way to see Stonehenge and some of the Cotswolds without needing to rent a car. Spending time at the less visited site of Avebury was also a nice addition and something I probably wouldn't have found on my own. read more

I went on Tour 1 to Stonehenge, Avebury, and the Cotswolds. Our driver and tour guide, Kevin, was both knowledgeable and friendly. He took really good care of us during the entire journey. I was especially impressed by the fact that he learned and remembered everyone's name during the entire day long trip. We had a slight unexpected mishap during our tour where the coach got a flat tire. Not to worry though, Kevin made sure that we all were taken to a nearby pub where lunch was purchased for us at no charge while they arranged to give us another coach to continue on our journey. I was super impressed by that level of professionalism. The tour itself is very comprehensive. You get ample time at each destination to walk around and take photos or just contemplate the scenery. Our driver also made multiple unscheduled stops at various overlooks that provided great photo opportunities. I would recommend this tour over any other one that is available to visitors in the Bath area. Lots and lots of fun! read more

We decided to do this tour on the evening before and, boy, was it worth it! Despite a slightly later start to the day due to unexpected traffic, we had a great time doing Tour #1 on the Mad Max list covering Stonehenge, Averbury & Cotswold Villages. If you've never been to this area (and we hadn't), it's a great way to do a bit of sampling of everything major. Kevin was a great guide, giving us enough freedom to do our own thing but also keeping to the schedule. The way Maddy (the Mad in Mad Max) had it set up - with audio talks as we were going from one place to another - was great! You get to learn a bit of the history before going to a place so you know what to look for. If we come back to the Bath area, we'll most definitely do another of the Mad Max tours! read more

I wish I could do another tour today. We did the tour including Stonehenge, Avebury and the Cotswolds. Our guide was, Kevin, who was entertaining, informative and extremely competent. When we booked this tour, I was a little leery of getting into a van for an all-day, narrated tour of the Cotswolds - would it feel crowded? would I have to listen to tour guide babble (or dead silence) for hours? would we feel like herded sheep? - but it turned out to be none of those things. The van seats were comfortable and roomy. Our guide, Tim, was knowledgeable and personable, and struck just the right balance between telling us interesting and relevant information about the areas we were traveling through, and leaving us the space to enjoy it on our own. All that and a beautiful corner of the world to enjoy. I understand that these little towns can get pretty crowded at the height of tourist season; chilly but pleasantly empty in late March. read more

Mad Max Tours to Stonehenge, Avebury and Cotswold villages was an amazing way to see these sights and I can't say how happy I am to have done it. I usually hate canned tours, but the small group size and thoughtfully designed itinerary of Mad Max made this one head's above the rest. To me, the best part of the tour was arriving at Stonehenge 15 minutes before it opened and then being able to have almost a half hour to ourselves before the crush of tourist buses showed up and made taking a decent photo almost impossible. By the time the lines began to get long for everybody else at Stonehenge, we were already on our way to Avebury, where we were able to take our time walking the stone circle and then eat a leisurely lunch. Capping off the day at one of the Cotswold villages before returning to Bath, UK by dinner made this a stress-free enjoyable day and one that me and my son will remember for years to come. read more

We took the tour today and had a great time. Honestly our guide Kevin, (the retired teacher, because there are two Kevins), is manly the reason why this gets full marks. He was both funny and informative. He took the time to walk us around some of the sites and made sure to give us fun trivia about the locals and villages. He was always willing to answer questions and accommodate everyone's needs. There are a few options for tour packages and we went with Tour 1, which Rick Steves mentioned was the most popular. Our favorite sites were Stonehenge and castle Combe, which really looked like a place from a fairytale even on a rainy day. We though Avebury was a bit redundant after Stonehenge but it's still a pretty site. Make sure you wear sturdy shoes if it is raining since the walk tends to be slippery at times. The tour stops for lunch in the village of Lacock where you have a few options. We picked the Red Lion and it was a big mistake. Quite possibly the worst food we've had on our trip to England thus far. Otherwise the town is lovely and small enough to see in 15-20 minutes. In short, this tour is a great way to see a lot of English countryside that we would have missed otherwise and is quiet fun. read more

We only had a day and wanted to get a feel for the Cotswolds, luckily I had read about Mad Max Tours. We took the full-day tour and our driver Charles was amazing. There were only three other couples in the van with us and we all got our money's worth. Charles took us through some beautiful country and we stopped at some of his favourite spots along the way. Many of these places were off the beaten path, something that I appreciate. Charles was also able to change plans when the weather turned sour, making sure we got the region's full experience. The price of £32.50 for the full-day tour can't be beat. That's cheaper than a car rental, plus you get a driver who knows far more than what any guide book can tell you. I generally don't like going on tours in groups, but Mad Max's knowledge of the area and dedication to showing us the authentic (and less-traveled parts) of the Costwolds made this a 5-star experience. read more

Mad Max Tours is not only fairly priced but completely amazing. The small group of 16 allowed everyone to ask questions, get on the same bus to Stonehenge, and still get the benefits of a discounted entrance ticket to Stonhenge. I liked the bus-like van a lot as it allowed our wonderful driver to pull over on small, country roads so we could take pictures of interesting sites such as a few of the white horses on the hillsides. We did the Stonehenge/Avery/Cotswald Tour from Bath and felt that we saw a lot of the countryside that we would not have been able to see without renting a car (at a much steeper price than what Mad Max was charging). It was also easier to get lunch because we were a smaller group and we could walk around small towns suck as Laccock (sorry if I am spelling that wrong) without causing too much of a disturbance and still see where "Harry Potter's Parents Lived." (Note: This is not a tour that is all about Harry Potter, our guide was just kind enough to point out some of the shooting locations.) Would highly recommend to anyone traveling in Bath. read more

I wanted to see Stonehenge while I was in UK, and I knew I wanted to go with a tour group so that I could learn more information about it. Mad Max took us on a wonderful trip to Lacock Village, Avebury, and Stonehenge. We even got to visit the inner circle of Stonehenge, which I understand is a privilege afforded to only a few visitors each day. Andy, the tour guide, was exceptionally knowledgeable. He has a great sense of humor and seemed genuinely proud to share his English heritage with us. Most people in our group were not from UK. So this tour allowed me to meet people from all over the world that I would not otherwise have known. It was a special experience. I would highly recommend it. read more

The day trip to Stonehenge, Avebury, and the Cotswald villages was tremendous. The driver / guide was knowledgable and entertaining. The owner, Maddy, has a relavant degree (Anthropology? History?). She no longer routinely joins the tours but she has recorded several detailed descriptions that are played on the bus to tell you about what you will see at upcoming stops. They're only a few minutes long but they give a some intesting scientific and cultural insights. These short talks were a real plus for me. Max no longer joins the tours either and he has not provided any recordings, but if you wish to bark at a sheep or two as you pass by, I suspect that he'd appreciate the effort. read more

We booked Tour 1 - Stonehenge, Avebury & Villages for a full day tour, and were lucky enough to have Collin as our guide. Not only was the tour a wonderful way to get out of Bath and see the surrounding countryside (especially if you don't have a car), Collin was an excellent guide - funny, charming, but not overbearing. We really enjoyed his expertise, and we still talk about how fun this tour was. We got to Stonehenge before the crowds descended, and Avebury, Lacock, and Castle Combe were adorable. This tour was great and small! 16 of us got into a van for an all day tour to Castle Comb, Avery Stone Circles, Lacock, and the infamous Stonehenge. Pickup was at 8:30 at the Abbey Hotel right next to Orange Grove and the Abbey and returned around 5:30. £38/person for this plus £14.50 for Stonehenge entrance fee and lunch. Our tour guide, Tim, was very happy and funny and made the tour enjoyable all day. He was very informative and was willing to answer any questions you have about any of the sites we visited. Overall, I highly recommend MadMax for your visit to Stonehenge and other places while in Bath. My only reason as to why I didn't give this a 5 was the amount of time spent at each place. It would have been great to spend a longer time in Stonehenge (only got maybe an hour 15 minutes) and Avery Stone Circles (got 45 minutes) but obviously in order to cover all these sites, we had to be on the road getting to them. read more

I booked Tour 1 (full day, Stonehenge, Avebury, Castlecombe) for my mom and I during our stay in Bath back in September. First off, our driver, Collin, was AWESOME! Funny, knowledgeable, patient, all around great guide. The tour itself was SO worth it. It's still to this day one of my favorite if not favorite things we did during our time in the UK. We learned so much. And being one of the first to arrive at Stonehenge is such a plus bc we were able to appreciate it without having to deal with the large crowds. All the villages we visited were beautiful and charming. We had a wonderful lunch during our stop in Lacock. And Castlecombe was enchanting! I absolutely recommend this tour to any and everybody. Loved this tour. Did Tour #1. So many great things to say. This was our first tour in the area and it left us wanting to explore even more. Our tour guide Kevin did a great job giving us information and driving through the small streets. Due to the timing of the tour we were able to miss most crowds which gave us easier access to sites. The number of locations is wonderful but would like a touch more time in Avebury and Lacock as there was so much to see. We will have to go back. read more

Our tour guide, Kev, was super freindly and filled with local facts and knowledge and was more than willing to point out other local landmarks and park near them for a bit. We had a small very small group so we didn't disturb any of the local towns with a bus load of tourists! I can't recommend this tour group enough! I visited England as a solo traveler back in September 2017. Our group was assigned to Tim (former police officer I believe) and he was so kind and knowledgeable. At the end of the day, he offered to take me to my lodgings with Bath YMCA, going above and beyond to make sure my stay in Bath was pleasant. It was truly a generous gesture. We can not tell y'all how much we enjoyed our tour last week. We were not sure how we were going to get to Stonehenge and driving in England we discovered was not our forte. We asked for a tour company and were told about the Mad Max company. We just expected to go to Stonehenge but got so much more for our money. First of all the tour guide Kevin was outstanding. We were so impressed that he remember our names and the names of everyone and that help us get to know them. Kevin got us to Stonehenge ahead of everyone. It was so great seeing the place with almost no one else. Kevin knew so much about not only Stonehenge, Avebury, Lacock and Castle Combe but the surrounding country. Small pieces of interest were pointed out to us including the animal sculptures on roofs that were thatchers trademarks, phone boxes being re-purposed, Salisbury Hill from the Peter Gabriel song and the chalk horses on the hills.
