Then they try to get me to sign the contract at $69. Then I am able to ask for a price adjustment, but I have to rent the unit first. What? No way. I got the bait & switch. Public Storage is corporate regulations run amok. If you know that going in, then it might not be quite so terrible. I'd highly recommend finding a smaller, local storage company and supporting your local business people instead of the Public Storage empire. Pros - It's a place to store your stuff. - Just give a ~7 day notice when you plan to move out. Cons - The "$1 first month rent" is only available for *select* units. A meaningless promotion. - Customer service will tell you to buy a disc lock, but not all units will use a disc lock, so Public Storage will sell you a very over-priced specific lock instead. - There does not appear to be a way to avoid purchasing the required $20 lock, unless you're getting a larger, outdoor unit. - $24+ one-time start up fees. - You are required to have renters' insurance, and our sales consultant did not give us the option to decline. She said we could pay for a month of insurance, and call Public Storage after we had a conversation with our rental insurance to make sure they covered our stuff. So we took the time to call our insurance company while in the Public Storage office instead. - The renters insurance they offer is incredibly over-priced. Get renters insurance for all your belongings with your car insurance instead. It will cost about the same, but cover all your belongings. - There's a lot of regulations handed down from corporate. Our consultant said it was company policy to ask us a series of questions to ensure we had the right sized unit. But it felt like a forced attempt at an upsell. - There are rent hikes scheduled for ~6 months after you open your unit, and annually after that. - No longterm leases, so no way to lock in your rates. Overall, the cons list here really made us feel nickel and dimed at every corner. It's not the local franchise's fault, but it really is not a pleasant experience to open up a storage unit here. I'm not looking forward to the surprise fees we'll get to pay on move out. read more

Really closer to 2.5. The space was fine, though it had more evidence of bugs than I would have liked. Access was good at first, but not great. Then they changed the hours such that I either had to wake up at the crack of dawn or leave work early. Then they sent an email with a 25% rate increase. This was the last straw for me - 10x10 for over $200/mo when I got a 10x20 just down the street for $5 more with better access hours. 1) they will try to sell you all kinds of stuff you don't need. Just say no. If you need boxes, get them somewhere else (Home Depot or lowes) for a third of the price. 2) they will try to sell you insurance from a third party that they "work" with. Say no and tell them your home owners or renters insurance covers it. Then get insurance from a objective third party. You can self insure if you tell them you have insurance already. 3) they try to get you to buy their lock because a standard lock "doesn't work". A regular lock works fine. 4) the clocks run early. So you will get locked out about 5 minutes before the actual lock out time. The only bright side is that the cost is pretty cheap but you get what you pay for. read more

I recently closed my unit, so this review is for while I had it. The management associated with this site ended up issuing a refund of the late fee, after a long delay. I had requested the sliding bar, which was partially cut through when I got the unit, to be replaced, but nothing was done about it. Another thing, when I originally rented the unit, they basically require you to buy insurance. I had AAA renters insurance so I declined, however I don't think its legal to force someone to buy the insurance. The location, cleanliness price for the unit at the time, were good, however the lack of followup on the items mentioned above is the reason for my rating. read more

The good. $1 for the first month. Not so good..There is a $22 admin fee. Remember to bring your own disc lock. The location of the unit, the tall young man who helped me, & the older man were great. The older gent replaced the rusted latch in about an hour. The storage unit was really dusty inside with cobwebs. They should be blown out the units when they are vacated. The bad. I walked in and a customer made a valid suggestion about improving their customer service by giving potential customers a heads up they are supposedly required to have rental insurance for the unit. Minimum plan $11 a month. The manager Karla ignored her and looked at her with a blank stare. This went on over and over, 4x's & Karla aka the site mgr was still clueless & did not understand the concept of providing better service. Finally the customer just gave up after got a really lame response. The ugly. I moved my stuff outta the unit. Note to self: The gate code is immediately deactivated when you close your account. There were five employees working in the office, including the manager yet no one was answering the telephone or after I pressed the call manager button at the gate. So I walked in & one gal was helping a customer, one was on the phone and the others were socializing. Karla is a silly goose, the lights are on but no one's home kind of way. No excuse for the crappy service when they're busting at the seams with employees behind the counter. Your renters insurance policy may cover your storage unit. Be sure to check into the details! If not, ask your insurance provider if it can be added to your policy etc. read more

Just got started with a small space yesterday. It was quick and easy. Everything was done smoothly online.

I needed a small (5x5) unit for a month while I transitioned to living in Los Angeles. The customer service: I believe Eddy helped me when I came in. He was extremely helpful and clear in his explanation of the rental agreement. The first month was $1 (a special), and after an administration fee and insurance it came out to around $50. The unit: I was on the 2nd floor of the new building on this property. It's a huge, 4-story building that is climate controlled. Very clean and impressive. The few times I was there, there was always a dolly at the entrance to use. That comes in handy when you have to make multiple trips to haul heavy boxes. Tips: Bring your own cylinder lock. They have them on-site for 20 bucks. You can get it cheaper elsewhere. Padlocks are no good here. Conclusion: This is like the Taj Mahal of self-storage as far as I'm concerned. That new building is awesome. I just needed a unit for one month and this place was clutch. No complaints here. read more

I like this facility. Access hours aren't so bad, 6:00AM - 8:45PM. It's located really close off of Lawrence Expressway and 101. When I went on July 4th to move some more stuff in the space they had staff available. There are temperature-controlled rooms at a higher premium for those that don't want their items (like musical instruments) to possibly warp or crack. They don't keep it low enough for wine storage though. Flat dollies like the ones at Home Depot are available to help hasten the loading and unloading. Hallways are well lit. The contract is on a month-to-month basis so I don't have to worry about getting stuck there for an extended amount of time if I'm not happy there. Auto-debit can be set up through debit or credit card (even AMEX for those that want the points). Extra packing materials, tapes, bubble wrap, and specialized boxes for glasses and dinnerware available for purchase. Overall the place is clean and well kept. No mouse traps in the corners or excess of spiderwebs lurking around. Hopefully I'll have a real home of my own to clutter up someday. Until then, there's Public Storage. read more

My husband and I rented a storage unit here in December 2013. In February, 2014, someone from the Public Storage corporate office called me to say that the building our unit was in was going to be demolished in order to build a bigger building. He said he had recently sent us a certified letter regarding this, but we didn't receive it. He said we had 2 weeks to move our items and that they had another space available to rent in another building, but it was smaller and would cost us more! Public Storage must have known when we rented the unit a few months before that it was going to be torn down. Obviously there are things like building permits that have to be filed for well in advance. We hurriedly moved our items out of the unit, even though we still had a week's paid rent left. I would have assumed that Public Storage would have reimbursed us for that extra week, but we have not received anything. I want to add that the on-site staff was always friendly and provided excellent customer service. My gripe is the way this was handled on the corporate level. I would not recommend using this facility unless you are in need of a very short-term rental! read more

I especially appreciate the friendliness of the staff and their willingness to go out of their way to help. This facility is located very conveniently for most of the Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Cupertino folks who are looking for storage solutions. As a customer, you get 24/7 access to the facility via security codes and keys. As a customer, you also have the flexibility to upgrade or downgrade your storage needs anytime since there is representative onsite to help 6 days a week. I highly recommend this Public Storage facility due to the friendly staff, great onsite managers, and a brand new storage facility. The rate hikes are absurd. I rented a 10x10' unit at their special back in May 2015. It was a really great deal of $79 for the unit. My understanding going into this was that I was locked in at this rate. Well, here we are, 10 months later, and I've seen not one but TWO rate hikes in the short time I've had this unit ($79 up to $109, and now $109 up to $149) I called after the first time and they said that the run assessments every year on the value of the unit and will adjust the rate based on that. (Ok, fair enough, but 2 in one year is absolute crap) Now that we jumped up again, I'll tell you, it's very clear that they do not want you to keep your unit for very long, and that's just what will happen with me. The initial sale rates seem tempting, but don't expect to keep your unit at that rate for very long. Bogus company with bogus rates. read more

Great bang for your buck, as far as storage options go near the Bay Area. The buildings were always clean inside and out every time I went there. They offer free dollies to use, but most of the time I've been there they were all in use - be prepared to bring your own dollies if you are moving a lot here. I had my items stored here for over a year - no problems at all. If you live in SF and need long-term storage, but don't want to spend over $150/month on a 10x15 space, head here for a deal. read more

Public Storage Feedback I was a customer for 5 months at 3900 W. Colonial Drive location in Orlando, Florida. I didn't feel like a customer, I felt like a target with a big bull's eye on my back. The employees at that location were not at fault, they have been taught and trained in the art of "Gotcha". Follow along: Gotcha #1 A low on-line price that increased 21% within 3 months. Gotcha #2 Mandatory lock that I'm stuck with for $20. I know it was explained to me, but it becomes a "plastic straw" that will go to the landfill. Such a waste! Gotcha #3 I was told the insurance for $15 a month was mandatory, I wasted $60 on this lie until I went to my insurance agent and brought copies of my homeowners policy which covers me worldwide. Anyone who has homeowners is so covered. Overcharged even after I declined, still fighting with Visa over that one. Gotcha #4 Because of the rate increase, I downsized to a adjacent unit right across aisle and switched between the units in an hour. It was 2 days before the end of the month and I had to pay the 2 days in new unit but no recovery from the 2 days I didn't use the old unit. These should be pro-rated. Gotcha #5 I left Public Storage May 22, leaving 9 days on the month, but there is no rebate on the month. These should be pro-rated. Gotcha #6 As I moved out I noticed how bad the walls were and I could see items in the person's unit that abutted me. No wonder they want insurance, units are in bad shape. Gotcha #7 I wanted to check out and waited half an hour to confirm my departure but couldn't get a printed receipt due to printer failure. The office should invest in some equipment. Gotcha #8 This is a by-the way, I took a picture of the handicapped space at front of location that always has a manager's car parked in it with no handicapped sticker, what's with that? BEFORE YOU RENT HERE, REVIEW THE ACCESS HOURS! We have been a customer here for many years. It is in between our home and business, so it is very convenient. Staff has been nice. Rates keep going up, but hey, its a hot economy, and they deserve to charge what they want. It's clean, reasonably well maintained, and I have no issues with the site. But as of December 1, 2017, ACCESS HOURS ARE BEING SLASHED to 9:30am to 6pm M-F and 5pm on weekends. That means you cannot access your stuff outside of these hours. WHAT? Its a storage unit. People NEED to go there off hours. With long work hours and traffic the way it is in SV, your storage unit is a "when you can get there" necessity, and that's usually before or after work. And its not like its heavily staffed during those hours anyway! The office closes, and then it is SELF-STORAGE. As in, we help oursleves. We have access codes, and put our own locks on our units. We carry our own stuff to the car. They have cameras to watch what you do. So before you even consider renting here, ask yourself: -Do I need files for work that I would like to pick up on my way in? -Will I be coming home from a camping trip late and want to drop off my tent and gear? -Do I always remember to pack everything before I leave town? Maybe I might have to stop by the storage facility to grab that extra gear on the way out... -If Fido barfs on the rug, wouldn't it be nice to run over and grab the carpet steamer NOW, rather than waiting until the next day, and leaving work to pick it up and use it, then return it before they close? Seriously. What is the point of making me pay to haul, move, sort and lock my own stuff, and then telling me I can't access it when I need it? What is the problem here? Does it cost too much money to keep the lights on? How cheap can you get PS? You've rendered this facility almost useless. DON'T RENT HERE UNTIL THEY ADJUST THE ACCESS HOURS! read more

Our apartment is filling up with automobile OEM parts, seasonal sporting goods, and other supplies that we don't need access to regularly. I decided to set up a public storage account at this facility. Although there's no on-site security officer patrolling, in general, the facility appears safe and looks to be well maintained and clean. I elected for a climate controlled indoor storage room and it is almost exactly as I expected. There are access codes to get in and out which ensures security and also ensures that if you check in and don't check out, they know that you're still onsite. The access hours are good (although I'm not sure why they open at 6AM versus opening later and staying open later), but 9PM is good enough for me. The process of getting a storage room was a bit more lengthy than I expected, but overall, I am pleased. I should say that I have never rented a storage facility before, so my opinion isn't based on any previous experience. However, my experience was good, and I would recommend it. read more

Only thing I didn't like was the increase in rent and had to move from one unit to the other which seems to be a corporate jack a$$ decision rather than a site decision. Went to the storage a few days ago and I was about to leave, my car battery died. Even though I am a AAA member but that might take 30 minutes or so to wait for rescue. Took my chance walked to the office and Morgan (manager) was there. No problem, she was willing to help and the conversation took less than 30 seconds. 3 minutes later, she showed up in front of my storage unit and help me to jump start my car. Awesome!! read more

I'm not an actual customer of this location, as I've always lived further north or south, but I have to laud the managers (Kelly and Richard) for their kindness and generosity, and can only imagine that translates to the experience using their services. During my last move, a terrible miscommunication led to the back end of the truck not being fully closed, and it flew open as I drove down 101. Someone on the highway alerted me to this, and I happened to pull off at Lawrence, ending up just down the street from Public Storage. I discovered that the latching mechanism had bent and couldn't be extricated by hand, and pretty much had a meltdown, as my phone was dead and I was trapped alone. I very slowly drove to PS, and Kelly and Richard came right out to greet me (thinking I was a normal customer), and were absolutely amazing when they realized my predicament. Richard got some tools and banged away at the cargo door, and Kelly let me use their phone to call a couple of people. Just when I'd given up hope, Richard actually got it free and closed down. They even used a zip tie to secure it, just to be sure. I really don't know what I'd have done without them, and they only thanks they asked was a good review on Yelp--I've been remiss in taking so long to post this, but definitely know where I'll be going for storage if I ever need it in the Sunnyvale area. AVOID AVOID AVOID Mine and a few other units at this location got broken into recently. I got a call after the fact to come check it out and talk to the cops. When I got there and saw that my unit was definitely robbed, I was justifiably pissed. At first, I circle the parking lot in a fugue state, considering demanding a full refund for my contract term (roughly $250 worth). After I calmed down, I asked to have rent for that month knocked off, and the clerk goes, "Yeahhhh... no. We don't do that". Wat? How is this an appropriate response? You're in customer service. Look, if you have to pull rabbits out of a hat to make your customer happy, then so be it. It's $20 of corporate money; what do you care, clerk? Pull some strings, or get someone who can. Alrighty, well then... shall we move on to the shitty sham patented lock that I was cornered into buying?? Can I get a refund for that, since it obviously failed doing its job? No dice. Surprised? I filed a report, recovered some of my stuff, the rest is gone. Public Storage's "quick fix" was to bend the door frame back into place. (lol, when does this nightmare end?) I live 90 miles away; I don't have another place to huff away to on short notice. So, like a dumbass, I keep throwing money at this awful company. I follow up on this ordeal with management. No apologies or any sign of concern at all. All of my voicemails to the regional manager, Steve Fatten, were IGNORED. Ah, but wait. It gets worse. The only communication I've received since the break-in call, was an oblique 'F-U' notifying me that my rent was being raised. (!!! Cool to know I'm a problem) A month in, before I feel heard. I talk to the--ahem-- 'NEW' manager. They've 'replaced' their staff ( I don't know if they were fed up and quit, or if they were layed off over this mess). I've explained the situation to the new manager, and that I feel ignored, cheated and disrespected, but she cites policy roadblocks in getting me any money back. I consider this issue unresolved. This rating goes for Public Storage's failures as a company, and as reflected by the team during Nov-Feb. read more

This opening hour of this facility is terrible. Gate hours close at 6pm. Unless you take time off from work, there is no way you can reach this facility in time. They used to have much longer opening hour, but they start cutting back last year. I wish they could have kept one day within the week with late hours. The renting price of this storage location isn't necessarily cheap either. If I haven't had so much stuff stored already, I would have moved location already. According to Sunnyvale DPS, this has been happening frequently at this location. Weeks later, I got a very impersonal postcard saying they are raising my rent again.
